1950s Pauline Trigere Blue Ribbon Printed Black Silk Dress

I Have A Question: 1950s Pauline Trigere Blue Ribbon Printed Black Silk Dress

This is a beautiful example of Trigere's earlier work. She was a master at cut and often fitted garments directly on a model. She was also very hands on and with earlier pieces like this you can be sure that she was personally involved in their construction. The dress is made from a very fine, light silk satin in black. Onto this is a 'ribbon' design in tone of blue that covers the straps and circle the dress at the neck, bust, hips, skirt and hem. The ribbon at the waist is perhaps my favorite part of the dress. It is actually the belt, constructed from a cut of of one of those ribbon sections and backed properly. It is genius and completes the illusion of being wrapped with the ribbon. The dress itself is a simple shift with a nipped in waist. The neckline is squared off at the front and back with the back sitting a little lower. The skirt is a simple pencil shape that is sleek and neat. It is all hand finished and exquisitely constructed. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in the same fine silk as the exterior. All hand finishes. The dress closes with a side back zipper. The belt closes with hook and eye. Signed all around the interior waist stay

1970s Emilio Pucci Turquoise Silk Chiffon Off Shoulder Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Emilio Pucci Turquoise Silk Chiffon Off Shoulder Dress

The color of this Pucci dress is wonderful. It is a beautiful shade of turquoise blue and the pops of pink and purple work perfectly against that backdrop. The cut is very flattering and forgiving and has a very romantic feel to it. This is not your typical stretch silk jersey dress that you see but it still has that fabulous Pucci print and feel. The sleeves are cut wide and full. Each ends with a ruffled detailing fro a pretty flounce. This same ruffle treatment is used at the hem of the skirt and helps give it lots of movement and an airy feel. I love the neckline - it has fabric ties that run all the way around the shoulders and you can adjust the neckline with them. They allow you to let it sit higher up or let them out wide enough to sit fully off the shoulders. It is very feminine but sexy at the same time. I love it. Excellent condition

Fully lined in a matching blue silk chiffon and closes at the side with a painted metal zipper. The shoulders can be adjusted with the ties that run through the upper edge.

Shoulders: adjustable
Bust: 18" flat across from side seam to side seam

1990s Thierry Mugler Futuristic Silver & Black Velvet Dress

I Have A Question: 1990s Thierry Mugler Futuristic Silver & Black Velvet Dress

This Thierry Mugler dress has a futuristic feel to it combined with that overt sensuality he worked into his clothes. It is made out of an inky black velvet and is cut to hug your curves. The bodice is cut along the lines of a corset feel to it with a stiffening fabric worked through the interior to give it structure, shape and support. The front neckline is cut with Mugler's signature 'flame' effect along the edge of the bodice edging. To hold the shape and allow you to mold it to your body, the points of the neckline are actually wired. This allow you to change their shape and mold them to sit exactly where you prefer. Worked behind that is a futuristic silver lame fabric that curves up and over the shoulder. You can spread it open more to create little shoulder caps as photoed, or push them up to sit just on top of the shoulder. This is quintessential Mugler. Excellent condition

Unlined through the skirt and closes with a side painted metal zipper. Internal stiffening and boning through the bodice. The interior of the bodice is finished in the same velvet as the exterior.

Bust: to 17" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 13" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have a Question

1972 La Mendola Silk Jersey 'Francolino' Print in Green Dress

I Have A Question: 1972 La Mendola Silk Jersey 'Francolino' Print in Green Dress

At one point in the past I was lucky enough to obtain a La Mendola dress that came with the original fabric samples of the available prints and patterns from the 1972 season. This dress has one of those fabric used for it - the 'Francolino' Print in green with pops of blue, giving us the exact date for the piece. The dress itself is a very wearable sized silk jersey beauty in that wonderful green print. It has a simple cut with an undefined waist and long sleeves. The neckline is cut into a V. It cut very loose and full through the body and you could belt it if you wanted to add shape. Normally a sell La Mendola pieces for quite a bot more then this but this one does have some flaws. There is a trail of discoloration that runs down the front. The print is so heavy and intricate that it does for the most part get lost and its not something you notice at first glance. It is there though so it must be mentioned and I did price it with that in mind. That said, it is in otherwise perfect condition and it would be a shame to not have someone enjoy it a little more as it still has lots of life left.

Fully lined through the body in a hand set pale blue silk. It closes at the back with a painted metal zipper. The sleeves are not lined and are cut extra long and are meant to bunch up a bit on the arm when on. I have photoed the flawed areas, please click to supersize and review before purchase.

I Have a Question

1970s Mollie Parnis Kimono Sleeve Printed Green Silk Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Mollie Parnis Kimono Sleeve Printed Green Silk Dress

Mollie Parnis began designing in 1933 and from a simple beginning built a multi-dollar business. She was known for dressing First Ladies and her designs were worn by First Ladies from Mamie Eisenhower to Betty Ford. Her Boutique label launched in 1970 and both that and her couture line continued until she shuttered the doors of her business in 1984.

It is hard not to love such a strong statement piece. Dresses with these over-the-top, elaborate sleeves are always a favorite and this one is wonderful. Despite that drama created by the sleeves, the almost weightless silk used keeps it light and easy feeling. The silk used for the dress is beautiful. It is a brilliant green with a ribbon finish. This technique to the silk, combined with the pops of pinks and purples used in the pattern, is really eye catching. The sleeves are easily the star of the show on this dress. Each is a dramatic panel of fabric that flows down from the shoulders. They are 38" in length to the longest points. The way they move and flow when you move is just incredible. The bodice has a high neck and is more fitted. A skirt that will finished just above the ankles on most is the perfect balance. The contrast between the colors and the beautiful cut, mixed with the volume of the sleeves is fabulous. Presents as excellent condition with notes to review below.

The bodice and skirt are fully lined in a matching green silk and the sleeves are unlined. It closes at the back with a painted metal zipper. I see a very faint water stain on the bust and a teeny area of thinning to the fabric just above the waist. Both are photoed. There is the lightest of fading to the very edge of the silk under one arm. The color and pattern make these all virtually unnoticeable once on and I have taken these into consideration when pricing.

Shoulders: 15"
Sleeves: 17.5" from shoulder to edge with a 28" drop from top to bottom
Bust: 18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 13" flat across from side seam to side seam

1970s Ossie Clark for Radley Tiered Silk Damask Halter Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Ossie Clark for Radley Tiered Silk Damask Halter Dress

Made during the Ossie Clark designed era at the Radley company, this wonderful silk jersey halter dress is a find. You can see the work of the Ossie Clark and Celia Birtwell team in the cut of this dress and fabric choice. It is made of a heavy black silk damask that has a floral & leaf design in a glossier tone worked directly into the fabric. The cut is classic early seventies and showcases his incredible tailoring. It has an almost Victorian feel to it with its full length tiered skirt. The neckline is a barely there triangle halter that just covers the breasts. Ties extend and curve around the back of the neck and then cross over each other and slide through loops on either side of the back. This leaves the back otherwise bare and adds a sexy touch. Under the triangles of the bust is a wide, fitted band that defines the waist. From there the skirt billows out and drops into tiers. Each tier uses more fabric so by the last layer you have quite a bit of fullness. The fabric really reacts nicely to the light and the volume is the skirt is incredible when you move. Excellent condition

Unlined and zippers to close at the low back . The ties go over the shoulder, through the loops at each side and ties at the back. Tagged a vintage UK 12 with a 34" bust noted on the label. Note that it just fit on a size 2 dress form so suitable for a 0-2

Bust: room for up to a 34" bust
Under bust" 13" flat across from side seam to side seam

Waist: 12" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have a Question

Early 1980s Roland Klein Glossy Black Strapless Sequin Dress

I Have A Question: Early 1980s Roland Klein Glossy Black Strapless Sequin Dress

Roland Klein studied in Paris at the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture before joining Dior in 1960 under Yves Saint Laurent. In 1962 he left Dior to work as an assistant to Karl Lagerfeld at Jean Patou. He then did a stint at Marcel Fenez, eventually becoming the managing director. It wasn't until 1979 that he launched his own label where he was known for designing for Diana, Princess of Wales. His work is built on that solid background and I love finding his earlier pieces like this fabulous sequin dress. the cut is kept simple so that the impact of the glossy black sequins can take center stage. It is strapless and the base of the dress is elasticized so that it is like wearing a tube top. This sits above a sleek little skirt that is midi length which perfectly shows off a strong shoe. I love how the sequins are placed on horizontal rows across the top and vertically down the skirt.  It is an easy to wear dress with maximum impact. Excellent condition

Slips on the wear with elastic all through the top. Note that the very top widens as it nears the top and will best suit someone large busted or will require adjustment. Unlined through the bust and lined through the skirt in a black silky rayon. If you needed more room int he hips you could remove or expand the lining as the outer layer has the same stretch as the top

Bust: 16.5-19" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 14-17" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips at inner lining: to 20" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have a Question

1970s Lanvin Plunge Front Backless Nylon Jersey Halter Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Lanvin Plunge Front Backless Nylon Jersey Halter Dress

This dress is insanely sexy. It is so unusual with its cut and looks fabulous on. The only downside is that it is extremely tiny. Even on my size 2 dress form it barely fit. The fabric used for it is a black nylon jersey knit that allows it to have that wonderful drape that you see. It really pushes the boundaries in terms of sensuality for Lanvin for this time period and I love it. The jersey used is virtually wrinkle free so it is a great traveling piece. The neckline curves around the back of the neck and at the front it plunges right to the waist. Bands of fabric wrap over the bust and button to the side giving it a bandeau feel. This also leaves cut outs between the bust and waist. The back is left bare other then that band of fabric running across it. Below the waist the skirt flows out with yard of jersey used. Excellent condition

The bust is self lined and the skirt is unlined. It closes with a side zipper at the waist and buttons with elastic loops at the side of the bandeau/halter part. Note that it barely fit on my size 2 dress form so is best suited on a 0.

Bust: variable
Band under the bust: 14.5 to maybe 16" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have A Question: 2016 Michelle Mason Nude Bias Cut Silk One Shoulder Dress

This is a pretty, more recent dress by designer Michelle Mason that is easy to wear and flattering on most body types and skin tones. It is made out of a fluid, nude tone silk, that is cut on the bias so that it drapes ad skims over the body. It has a one shoulder silhouette and the side that has the sleeve is cut to pouf out above the cuff. The hem falls in an asymmetrical line and has a high slit that runs up one side. Very pretty and easy to wear. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a matching bias cut silk. It closes with a hidden set side zipper. Tagged a modern size 6. The easy, bias cut will allow it to fit a variety of sizes.

I Have a Question

1970s Scott Barrie Multi Wrap Bodice Pink Silk Jersey Jumpsuit

I Have A Question: 1970s Scott Barrie Multi Wrap Bodice Pink Silk Jersey Jumpsuit

Scott Barrie was known for designing beautiful and sexy clothing. He was particularly adept in the use of silk chiffon and silk jersey, both notoriously difficult fabrics to work with. For this jumpsuit he uses a pink silk jersey and that color is fabulous. The fabric is slinky and sensual and it has the added advantage of wrapping and draping well. He used this to full advantage with the top that you can drape in several different ways from strapless to a caped shoulder to single shoulders on either side. The halter top twists and wraps around the strapless bodice and has long ties that you can wrap around the waist or tie in a variety of ways as I have done for the photos. Below that, the legs are cut wide and they are supermodel long. Barrie's models were known for dancing down the catwalk and his work often had wrapped ties like this jumpsuit does. The color is very flattering on a wide range of skin tones. Barrie was one of the great American designers and this is an exceptional piece from him. Excellent overall condition

The pants are unlined and the wrapping of the long attached panels of fabric make the base of the bodice act as its own lining. It closes with a back zipper and has elastic running through the top of the bodice. There is the slightest scuffing to the fabric here and there and a couple of areas where the fabric has darkened slightly but it was not able to capture in a photo. Mentioned for accuracy and taken into consideration when priced. It presents perfectly once on. Hand finished inside. The easy cut will allow for a range of sizes

Bust: 14-17" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 13" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 20.5" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have A Question: c.1976 Mac Tac Black Dragon Printed Nylon Jersey Dress

Made from a beautifully printed fluid, nylon jersey, this dress drapes and moves wonderfully It is one of those dresses that are very easy to travel with as it is virtually wrinkle free. It is the kind of piece you can throw into a suitcase and be able to wear right away and also has the added benefit of being able to be hand washed. It works from day to night depending on how you style it and what shoes you wear. The black base is the perfect backdrop for the orange print that runs over the dress. If you look closely you realize that the print is actually a combination of stylized dragons and birds. The bust slightly cross over itself at the front and the shoulders can be opened so that they fan out over each shoulder as I have photoed it, or you can bunch the fabric to sit more on the top so it feels more sleeveless. Both the front and back are set into low Vs. The skirt flares to the floor in a gentle sweep of jersey. I love how the print accents the line of the dress to full advantage. The Mac Tac label was produced by a parent company called Leonard Sunshine and in terms of print and quality it is right up there with Leonard  or Pucci pieces in my book. Excellent condition.

Unlined, slips on to wear with a flat elastic through the waist. The fabric has some stretch. Appears to have been worn very little if at all. The fabric does have stretch. Tagged a vintage 8

Bust: 15-17" flat across from side seam to side seam

This leaves a large keyhole down the center front that runs right to the seam at the waist. This leaves the back bare to where it scoops down just above the waist. 1970s Malcolm Starr Bold Print Dress with Quilted Skirt

I Have A Question: 1970s Malcolm Starr Bold Print Dress with Quilted Skirt

This was designed when Youssef Rizkallah headed the company so would have been made between the years of 1969 and 1975. The years that Youssef headed the line are among some of my favorites and in particular his pieces that utilize quilting and patchwork are truly iconic. Rizkallah was born in Egypt and studied at the Ecole de dessin appliqué and the Ecole des arts decoratifs in Paris. The fabric used is unusual in that it feels like a light wool. It is not a fabric that you see a lot of for this line but it holds the shape and color beautifully. The bodice skims over the torso with darling little capped sleeves that are each finished with a little bow. The  waist line is defined with a seam and set a little higher then the natural waist for just a hint of an empire feel. The neck is scooped and the pattern places on the bodice to highlight the shape and curve of the dress. The skirt cascades to the floor in a widening swath of fabric and the combination of fabric and the quilting detail helps to give it the shape that you see. A decorative row of buttons runs down the front for added detailing. The colors used are wonderful and the dress has a glamorous and exotic feel. I love that it has pockets hidden away along the seams of the skirt. It is really a lovely dress. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a purple silky rayon through the bodice and self-backed through the skirt. It closes with a painted back metal zipper. The buttons down the front are decorative only. I see a tiny bit of discoloration on the interior lining of the bodice but the exterior is pristine.

I Have a Question

1970s Lanvin Bright Printed Dot & Stripe Jersey Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Lanvin Bright Printed Dot & Stripe Jersey Dress

This vintage Lanvin dress has a bright color and print combination on a black base. The jersey fabric it is made of was considered one of the new "miracle fabrics" of the day as they gave women the option to wash and wear and travel with pieces that needed little or no ironing once you arrived at your destination.  Lanvin began producing pieces from these jerseys in the early 1970s to appeal to their younger, jet set clients and I love when I find great examples of these and this time period in the label's history. The dress is sleeveless with a higher cut neckline for balance. The collar extends out to long ties at the back. The waist is cut loose and easy and the definition is given by the braided black belt that come with the dress. The belt has fabulous tassels at each end. If you decide not to belt it the line is long and lean. The skirt falls to the floor and slightly widens as it nears the hem. I love how those stripes contrast against the dot print and are used to define the cut of the dress. The fabric is easy to care for and this is a great piece to travel with. Excellent condition with one small note below.

Unlined and closes with a back painted metal zipper that sits below a keyhole and the collar closes with hook & eye and the attached ties. One tie is longer then the other but falls even if you tie it with the longer side looping. Has its original tie belt. Note that there are some very faint marks in a couple of the dots around the waist. This was taken into consideration when pricing.

Bust: 17-19" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 15" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 18-20" flat across from side seam to side seam
Length: 55" from top of bodice to hem

c.1976 Kay Cosserat Wool, Mohair & Silk Kimono Inspired Coat

I Have A Question: c.1976 Kay Cosserat Wool, Mohair & Silk Kimono Inspired Coat

Kay Cosserat was a British knitwear designer. The majority of her work is held in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, leaving few of her pieces out in circulation. She launched her own label in 1974 and was well known for her beautiful color choices, combinations and use of texture. At her height of popularity in the mid-late 1970s, people patiently waited for a piece of her work to become available and they were treasured for years after. She did not even have a showroom, making her pieces that mush more exclusive. This is an exceptionally beautiful example of her work and it has an almost kimono or robe feel to it in its cut. It is made out of a mohair, wool and silk mixed knit, worked to form organic lines. The way she uses the direction of them further highlights the design of the coat. It close with a single hook at the front waist seam. The shoulders slop down and into those fabulously wide cut sleeves. The back also angles down into the skirting. The bottom portion of the coat flows out in long vertical lines to give you height and contract to the horizontal placement of the upper portion. It's gorgeous and once on, you won't want to take it off. Excellent condition.

Unlined and closes with a single hook and loop at the front.

Sleeves: approx 13-14"

Bust: no true defined seams

c.1974 Valentino Boutique Nubby Wool Oversized Check Cape

I Have A Question: c.1974 Valentino Boutique Nubby Wool Oversized Check Cape

This striking cape is from the 1970s Valentino boutique label. The cut and drape of the wool is fabulous and it feels like a piece you should be stomping about the Moors in. The oversized check of the wool is striking and the fabric itself is lighter then you would at first think. The layers do give is some weight but it is just heavy enough to be able to hold the shape and drape perfectly but feels very comfortable on. The lightweight, soft wool is the perfect warmth for cool evenings. It is trimmed in a deep brown velvet at the neck and has a brown braided trim down the edges. I love the two layers that give it that perfect 70s moody feel. It hooks to close at the neck and then has two buttons below that with the rest of the cape open. Under the top shorter layer is a curved and more structured shoulder. It is well made and a versatile piece that can be worn endlessly. Excellent condition

Unlined with hook & eye at the neck and two buttons below that to close. Slips on.

Shoulders: no defined seams
Bust, waist & hips: open
Length: 51" from neck to longest point on the hem

Chic 1970s Pauline Trigere Black Silk Satin Strapless Dress

I Have A Question: Chic 1970s Pauline Trigere Black Silk Satin Strapless Dress

This Pauline Trigere dress is so well made with a very high level of construction and detailing put into its execution. It is constructed from a matte black silk satin that has a rich feel to it. The fabric itself becomes an important part of the design as it allowed Trigere to drape and mold the gown as she wished. The interior is constructed out a silk taffeta and the combination of the two silks makes the dress feel amazing once on. This double layer of silk also helps to give the gown the structure that you see. It drapes over the bust, skims the curves and falls to the floor in a graceful column once on. The skirt is cut with a touch of fullness through the hip and it has little hidden pockets along the side seam. The waist is detailed with soft gathered drapes of the fabric and it is nipped in to create shape. The bodice has an inner fitted, corset like interior that hugs the body and keeps the dress in place. Over that, the silk is draped and hand placed across the bust to create the gathers that you see. The shoulders and arms are left exposed. The workmanship is exquisite and to demi-couture standards. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a black silk taffeta with the bodice having a separate inner silk taffeta corset. Lightly boned through the sides and the interior is all hand finished. Hidden pockets along the seam and each pocket is lined in silk. Hand finishes throughout. It appears to have been worn very little if at all.

1970s Mr. Dino Pink Graphic Print Jersey Body Suit & Skirt Set

I Have A Question: 1970s Mr. Dino Pink Graphic Print Jersey Body Suit & Skirt Set

The man behind the Mr Dino label was actually Max Cohen and he is interesting for two things specifically. He actually invented machine that was used to screen the print onto the fabric of his pieces, and he himself designed every print that you will ever see on one of his garments. This set is quite wonderful with its simple but graphic print. It is made from two pieces and both are made out of his signature, washable jersey fabric that is easy to wear, pack and travel with. The top is actually a full body suit with a low set leg that snaps into place. The sleeves are long and the neckline cut wide so you get a glimpse of collarbone. The skirt is long, cut straight and has a slit up one side. A matching, wide fabric tie cinched in at the waist. I love the bold pink and black print that covers all three pieces and how the design and the color are used to showcase the different parts. Added points for being able to wear the pieces together or separate. Excellent condition

Both pieces are unlined. The top snaps to close at the bottom and the skirt has an elastic through the waist. All the pieces appear to have never been worn. Washable fabric. The fabric has stretch

I Have a Question

1978 Halston Pink One Shoulder Draped Jersey Dress

I Have A Question: 1978 Halston Pink One Shoulder Draped Jersey Dress

I am always on the look out for this style of dress by Halston. It is perhaps the most iconic of all of the Halston silhouettes and in 2016 a red version of this exact dress entered modern day fashion history when Kate Moss wore its twin on the red carpet at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. This was issued on a variety of colors including this wonderful pink version.

Halston was a master at this cut. There is a certain sexiness caused by the illusion of having the entire dress suspended by one hook at the shoulder. It gives the sense that undoing that hook would cause the entire dress to drop in a puddle around you (which it would). It is constructed from two attached layers. The inner dress is cut from the same synthetic jersey as the outer layer and it skims over the body in a long sheath. This inner part of the dress has a high slit cut into the side that travels up the side of the leg opposite to the draped side. Attached to that inner sheath lies a draped panel of jersey that is suspended from the shoulder. It falls from that shoulder down and over the front and the back of the dress. The dress hooks into place at the shoulder and the jersey cascades loosely down and over the inner layer for the ultimate Grecian goddess feel. This is a classic dress by Halston that is perfect for traveling as it is wash and wear and will travel exceedingly well with little to no wrinkling. It is very easy to style too - a quick change of shoe takes it day to night in a snap. Excellent condition.

Slips on to wear and has a hook at the top of the shoulder. These will fit a variety of sizes since they are not cut to be super fitted and the jersey does have some stretch.

1970s James Galanos Couture Draped Printed Floral Silk Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s James Galanos Couture Draped Printed Floral Silk Dress

This unusual and striking Galanos dress dates to the late 1970s, early 1980s, and combines a silk twill with silk chiffon to create the layered print effect that you see. The entire dress is done in a combination of yellow and blue. The inner layer and skirt are an opaque silk twill. Over that, Galanos has then used a silk chiffon in the same two print. The two layers used this was give the pattern depth and play on the saturation of the color. The bodice has a high neck and soft drape over the bust. Each sleeve billows above the cuff and the shoulders are gathered. The back is left partially open with the slit that goes from neck to waist. The skirt has a straight cut with a side slit. There are two panels attached on either side and these meet and loop through an opening at the waist. This gives it a drape over the hip and fabric cascading down one side.  Excellent condition

The bodice is constructed from two layers of silk chiffon. The skirt is a made of a silk that is fully lined in a yellow tissue silk with silk chiffon draped overlay. The dress closes with a low painted metal zipper that starts at the waist. There are a series of hook and eye at the back of the neck and the chiffon in between is left open. Each sleeve closes with a fabric covered button.

1970s Givenchy Silk Chiffon Floral & Metallic Heart Print Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Givenchy Silk Chiffon Floral & Metallic Heart Print Dress

With the recent passing of Hubert de Givenchy, pieces that were made while he still headed the atelier seem to be even more special. This dress is gorgeous with its vibrant color palette. It mixes a floral print and pretty colors for a bright, fresh feel. Worked into the printed silk are a scattering of gold hearts that are made out of a metallic thread. These give the dress a subtle shimmer. as they catch the light. Anchoring the print is a solid blue silk satin edging that is used at the cuffs and neckline. The sleeves are quite full and puff out above the buttoned cuffs. There are three full layers that make up the skirt. The top layer is cut on the bias cut and is a silk chiffon. The inner skirt is a tissue silk and between the two is a layer of silk organza that helps to give the skirt a touch of volume. Excellent condition with one small note to review below.

Fully lined in a yellow tissue silk with the sleeves left unlined and an extra layer of yellow silk organza through the skirt. It closes with a side painted metal zipper below the waist line and fabric covered snaps above that. The front buttons are functional. Each cuff buttons to close. There is the smallest amount of fading to the blue silk on the upper neck on one side as seen in the provided photo. Hand finished. Hand written tag and marked as a size 38

I Have a Question

Spring 1973 Galanos Couture Pleated Peach & Taupe Silk Chiffon Dress

I Have A Question: Spring 1973 Galanos Couture Pleated Peach & Taupe Silk Chiffon Dress

James Galanos was a genius at manipulating the finest of silks and when one finds such an exemplary example of his work like this it is a true joy. The construction on this particular Galanos dress is divine. It is made up of layers of a pretty peach colored silk chiffon anchored by a wide panel of a soft taupe anchoring the bottom hem. The silk is as light as a feather and is a difficult fabric to work with under any circumstance but Galanos took it a step further and made the entire dress into an intricate pleated construction. The silk is cut it on the bias and then it was knife pleated in long vertical lines. Even the wide cut, full sleeves have been pleated in this manner. This pleating technique give the dress an incredible movement and overall texture. The top is cut to sit loose and easy with an elastic finish at the waist. It can be worn on its own or with the wide ribbed leather belt that came with it. The skirt swirls out below that to the floor and Very feminine and very pretty. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in the same peach colored silk chiffon and closes with a two separate painted metal zippers at the back. The first closes the interior lining and the second is hidden under the pleats to close the outer layer. Each cuff has elastic. Hand finishes throughout and made to demi-couture standards. The belt shows minor wear - light scuffing here and there but is otherwise in excellent condition. I see two tiny smudges on the back shoulder mentioned for accuracy. The color has more of a pop and brightness to it in a person and the taupe panel is a softer shade in person. The photos do not do this amazing piece justice at all

1970s Bill Tice Peach Print Halter Dress & Jacket Pleat Set

I Have A Question: 1970s Bill Tice Peach Print Halter Dress & Jacket Pleat Set

Earlier this week I listed a Bill Tice that I own the twin of and I have to confess that I also own a twin of this one. I wear it endlessly - most often without the jacket. It is super sexy with that low demi-cup halter bodice and little bare keyhole just under the center front. The straps are tiny and curve up and around your shoulders and its cut so it feel like the back sits slightly off the body. It is made of a peach jersey that is meant to mimic a silk. It feels amazing on and has the added bonus of traveling very well. It is the kind of set you can throw into your suit case and slip on with either flats or heels when you reach some far off destination and be perfectly ready to go. The inner dress is long and slim with pleats running down its length and a pretty print that slowly turn more of a pale green as it nears the hem. The jacket has that same print treatment and just slips on ans ties at the neck. There is a high slit up one leg of the dress that shows when you walk or sit. I love the flat piping detail that runs across the bust. Excellent condition.

Unlined and both pieces slip on. Ties at the top of the neck of the jacket. The easy fit allows it work on a variety of sizes as long as the bust fits.

I Have A Question: c.1998 Richard Tyler Couture Backless Silver Beaded Dress

Richard Tyler had a small shop in Melbourne at the age of 18 and by the 1970s was attracting the ye of touring rock groups. In 1978 he dressed Rod Stewart for his Blondes Have More Fun tour. He specialized in costumes for the rock star set through the 80s but eventually settled in Los Angeles, opening his first showroom in 1988. The Richard Tyler Couture line was his main, high end line and pieces retailed for thousands to tens of thousands of dollars. He was known for his impeccable tailoring and finishes and at the time employed some of the best tailor and seamstresses in the business. This dress is almost too scandalous to wear. The base fabric is a mix of metal mesh, backed in a black fabric so it is not see through. Onto that are rows of glass beads, hand sewn into place and set in vertical rows with some rows having a angular design.  The front drapes over the bust and ties behind the neck. The cut leaves the sides and back completely bare. the waist at the back is cut to drape as well and dips quite low. The skirt falls to the floor in a sleek column of beads and metal mesh. It is slit up one side extremely high which only adds to its overt sexuality. It is super model long and insanely fabulous. Really an outstanding piece. Excellent condition

Fully lined in black and ties at the back of the neck with a black cord looped through the neckline. It closes at the low back with a hidden set zipper. Perhaps the occasional missing beads here and there but nothing that deters or should be pointed out specifically. The cut will allow for a variety of sizes with the waist sitting lower on a smaller girl

I Have a Question

1986 Murray Arbeid Silver Glitter Stars & Bows Ballgown Dress

I Have A Question: 1986 Murray Arbeid Silver Glitter Stars & Bows Ballgown Dress

Murray Arbeid was a British fashion designer who specialized in floor-sweeping, show-stopping evening gowns. He was best known for dressing Princess Diana and Shirley Bassey. He once joked that "if there were a Nobel Prize for creations in taffeta, he would have won it." in 1987 he told the Chicago Tribune "I specialise in occasion ready-to-wear couture - that means the clothes are off-the-rack but of couture quality - for cocktails and evening". This dress is from 1986 and is a variation on the dress he designed for Princess Diana. Her dress was made for a private dinner given by former King Constantine of Hellenes at Claridges in 1986.  It was then worn by the Princess at the Royal Opera House. Covent Garden in December 1987, and again in Paris in 1988.The Princess Diana dress sold at auction for $48,300. A version in this same black and silver was also worn by Shirley Bassey at the 1987 Royal Variety Performance and she wore that dress for a 1986 publicity card as well.

The dress is gorgeous and made from a black silk organza that has a scattering of silver stars in various sizes covering it from top to bottom. The stars catch the light beautifully and I love that they range from tiny little ones to larger. It really gives the feel of the night sky. The bodice is fitted and shaped with low cups and it is fitted slim through the waist. It dips down at both the front and back. Each shoulder is finished with two wonderful, tremendous bows that are set to butt up against each other so they lift up and out beautifully. They sit slightly off shoulder and the final effect is wonderful. The skirt is equally as wonderful and is cut very full with multiple layers of tulle and silk built in underneath so that the shape is perfectly retained. It is gorgeous and very well made. Excellent condition with a small note regarding the interior to review in the condition notes below.

Fully lined with multiple skirts and tulle in the skirt. Boning through the bodice and it closes with a back metal and nylon zipper. There is some fading to burgundy of the fabric on the interior only but is perfectly sound and stable.

I Have A Question: Documented 2003 Oscar de la Renta Silk Leopard Print Dress

This dress is very interesting because it was not a runway piece shown that year but a version of it was worn by none other then Hilary Clinton. My client bought this at one of the charity sales in NYC and I am sure that it was a custom made piece for a client based on the Hilary dress. It has no label but is the exact fabric of Hilary's and has all the hallmarks and fine work of an ODLR piece. It is gorgeous and has those classic Oscar lines with a fitted bodice and his signature full skirt with all the underskirts built in underneath to give it that beautiful shape. The bodice is sleeveless and fitted to the body. At the back it drops into a low V to show an expanse of skin. The skirt has beautiful fullness and movement and the hem is curved up and inside with a deep inner hem of fabric and silk that helps to give it the fullness. A secondary shorter interior skirt adds to the fullness you see. A wonderful and iconic piece. Excellent condition

Lined in a combination of the same exterior silk, silk and a silk organza. It closes with a back zipper. Secondary inner skirt and pockets hidden along the seams. No size tag or labels. It appears to have been worn very little if at all.

Bust: 17" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 12.5" flat across at the inner waist stay  maybe 13" from side seam to side seam if you don't do the stay up
Hips: open

Gorgeous 1970s Leonard Swirling Print Silk Jersey Maxi Dress

I Have A Question: Gorgeous 1970s Leonard Swirling Print Silk Jersey Maxi Dress

I absolutely love this fabulous 1970s Leonard maxi dress that is made out of his signature silk jersey fabric.  That fabric choice is what gives these dresses the perfect drape and fit. Each of his dresses were made of custom designed fabrics. This one has a wonderful color palette that mixes of taupes, chocolates and greys all done in those glorious swirls from neck to hem. I love the fitted cut through bodice and how each sleeve is cut with a wide bell cuff. The cut allows the dress to hugs your curves and perfectly balance out the skirt that flows to the floor from the low waist seam in a swoop of bias cut silk jersey. The skirt flows out and gradually widens as it nears its hem allowing for more of that pretty design to be seen whenever you move. I love the high neck and signature contrasting borders that define the neckline, cuffs and hem. This one even has its original matching fabric sash that you can cinch in and define the waist with. A real little beauty. Excellent condition.

Unlined and closes with a back, hand set metal and nylon zipper. The fabric is a silk jersey and does have some stretch with the fabric signed throughout.

Sleeves: 25"
Shoulders: 14.5"
Bust: 16-18" flat across from side seam to side seam

1970s Bill Tice One Shoulder Gold & Black Jersey Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Bill Tice One Shoulder Gold & Black Jersey Dress

This is one my own personal favorites of all the Bill Tice designs. I own a version of it myself that I wear endlessly and versions sit in the closet of countless celebrities like Rachel Zoe  & Nicole Richie. It is one of those dresses that you know is going to work every time you put it on. Whenever I get my hands on one it flies out the door. It is insanely sexy with an easy to wear caftan feel that is suspended from one single shoulder. It is made of a black liquid jersey that feels amazing on and has the added bonus of traveling very well. It is the kind of piece you can throw into your suit case and slip on  with either flats or heels when you reach some far off destination and be perfectly ready to go. The inner dress is long and slim and this is topped by a looser overlay that is cut on an angle. There is a high slit up one leg that shows when you walk or sit . The single shoulder ties into place and it is accented by his signature curved top stitch gold lame. Excellent condition.

Unlined and slips on. Ties at the top of the shoulder. The easy fit allows it work on a variety of sizes. The gold is a true gold in person

Bust: 15-18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 15-18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 18-20" flat across from side seam to side seam

1970s Oscar De La Renta Silk & Vivid Metallic Strapless Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Oscar De La Renta Silk & Vivid Metallic Strapless Dress

This is a stunning strapless silk and metallic dress by Oscar De La Renta. The floral pattern that runs over the black silk chiffon is so vibrant and beautiful. My photos do not begin to do the colors justice. These are bright metallic lame thread that is woven through the fabric from top to toe and the flowers seem to jump off the fabric. Oscar kept the silhouette simple and chic to balance that color and the dress has a simple strapless, fitted bodice that tops a long skirt that gathers up in a pretty curves at the front. The fabric of the skirt wraps around itself at the front and is cut on a curve on both sides. Both layers of the black chiffon lining are cut in the same way so that when you walk you get a flash of leg at the front. The chiffon is lightweight and that fabric choice allows the skirt to have lovely movement around you as you move. The top is fitted and the fabric gathered and ruched over the bust and then gathered into the back zipper. Really a lovely dress. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a black silk chiffon, with two layers in the skirt. Closes with a back painted nylon zipper. Note that the bodice has lost one of the boning at one side and there is a slight bit of fabric loss at the edge on one side that is barely noticeable. It stays in place easily if it fits just right.

Bust: 16.5-17" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 14.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: to 21" flat across from side seam to side seam
Bodice: 10.5" from top of dress to waist seam
Skirt: 42" from waist seam to back hem

1980s Yves Saint Laurent One Shoulder Velvet Dress

I Have A Question: 1980s Yves Saint Laurent One Shoulder Velvet Dress

This dress is lovely and has that classic one shoulder cut. It does not have any YSL tags in it but does retain its YSL printed interior fabric loops to hang it. I have only ever seen this on the inside of the Variations YSL label so I would guess that this si from that line, The Variations label was a lower cost ready to wear line that was produced through the 1980s. I do not usually buy from this label but made an exception for this dress as it has great lines and I thought it a fabulous little number that still reflects the YSL aesthetic. It is made out of a synthetic black velvet that has a secondary print running over the surface in a deep muted gold. One shoulder is suspended by a tiny double strap and the other left bare. It skims over the body with a slight gather at one side of the waist to give shape there. On the skirt at the side opposite to the shoulder is a high slit to give a flash of leg. Simple, chic and sexy. Excellent condition

Unlined and closes with a side hidden set zipper.

I Have a Question

c.1998 Sully Bonnelly Red & Gold Floral Strapless Trained Dress

I Have A Question: c.1998 Sully Bonnelly Red & Gold Floral Strapless Trained Dress

The designer of this dress, Sully Bonnelly, had a bit of a hey day in the late 1990s. He worked as a designer for the houses of Bill Blass and Eli Tahari before launching his own collection in 1998. It retailed at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and other better stores around the world. He eventually went on to Oscar de la Renta. The pieces from his own brief label from this time period were of very good quality. This dress is from that time period.

Yards and yards of brilliant floral silk brocade with gold thread accents have been used to make up this gown. The silk he chose is just incredible. It has a coral red base with beautiful flowers woven through the silk. Layered over that base are gold accents that give the gown a subtle glow. The fabric choice allows it to hold the shape and silhouette without having to add any additional underpinnings. The bodice is strapless and fitted with curved front seams to follow and highlight the curves of your body to below the hip. The skirt flows from the bodice with no seam at the waist to break the line and is cut to sit sleek and simple at the front and then at the back it is wonderfully dramatic and very full. The back skirt is trained so that it flows out behind you in a dramatic swoop of fabric. The back dips into an almost impossible low V to leave a bare expanse of skin. Those details combined with that spectacular floral print make it one of the best gowns I have seen from this time period. The color, the print, the fabric and the cut all add up to a wonderful, beautiful gown. Excellent condition.

Fully interlined in a red silk satin through the bodice and torso, the skirt is interlined with a white silk organza. The bodice has an additional lining in the same fabric and is boned and. The dress closes with a hidden set back metal zipper. The inner bodice closes with a hook & eye and a flat hook at the attached waist stay.

Bust: 18.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 15" flat across from side seam to side seam

Length: 56" to the front hem from the top of the bodice, 66" to the back hem

I Have A Question: Recent Giambattista Valli Impulse Red Floral Strapless Dress

This came in with a a clothing lot and I thought that it was super cute for a diffusion line piece. It was designed by Giambattista Valli for Macy's Impulse and is based on one of his best known designs. The dress is strapless with a built in under garment though the bust. The silk looking chiffon is draped over the bodice and is finished with a bow at the front. It comes with its original black ribbon that you tie into place for a pretty contrast as it trails to the hem of the dress. I have shown it at the front but you could tie it to trail down at the back as well. The skirt falls to the floor in a pretty cascade of rose covered fabric. Excellent condition

Fully lined in a black rayon and closes with a back zipper. Original black ribbon tie and fully built in underwire cups. Tagged a modern 4

I Have A Question: *NEW PRICE DROP* 1960s Malcolm Starr Silk, Sequin, Beads & Crystal Embellished Dress

Elinor Simmons designed for the Malcolm Starr label from the early 1960s to 1972 and you can see her handiwork in this classic Starr piece with its almost sculptural lines and elaborate bead, sequin and rhinestone work. The dress itself has a simple A-line cut with capped sleeves and a high scooped neck. The upper portion of the shoulders and sleeves are finished in a silk organza that is the same color as the more shaped silk used through the body. Onto that is absolutely beautiful hand done detailing that runs across the neck and on each sleeve. The bead work and rhinestones here really catch the light and it is quite beautiful. The bodice skims over the torso with darling little capped sleeves and a high set waist line. The skirt comes out from under the seam at the waist in a widening curve of fabric and I love the fullness of it. The silk used has a almost polished cotton finish to it but with a touch more texture. The fabric choice really holds the shape of the dress beautifully and the color is wonderful. I love that it has pockets hidden away at the inset seams that run down the front. It is really a lovely dress. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a pale green silk and closes with a low painted back metal zipper. It is open between the zipper adn the hook at the neck It looks to have been worn very little if at all. Note that color is a little more of a 'celery' then how it photoed. The elaborate rhinestone, sequins and beads on the upper bodice are all set by hand.

F/W 2002 Prada Runway Look 19 Navy Top & Black Pants Set

I Have A Question: F/W 2002 Prada Runway Look 19 Navy Top & Black Pants Set

This is the twin outfit of the full runway look, Look 19, from the fall 2002 Prada show and it was shown on Carmen Kass on the runway. Style.com's review of this show in part said said:

In a show that was densely layered with references to the history of fashion, Prada cut a strong, curvaceous and erotically charged line to give grown-ups a whole new reason to buy. ... Revisiting structured tailoring—which is where she began in the '90s—was only one of her ideas.  Prada referenced many of her own past collections, from her bourgeois ladylike phase to her militaristic moments and her love of vintage lingerie. But her achievement was in making something inspiringly new out of confronting a personal taboo. "I was fed up with people saying I can't do sexy clothes!" she stated backstage. It was said with a laugh, but the designer has done nothing less than change the fashion agenda overnight.

This is being sold as a set just as it walked the runway. The  top is made of a beautiful silk, matte satin finish. The blue is that signature Prada blue that is so deep it almost looks black in certain lights. The work on it is amazing and it is cut to perfection. I love the dramatic poufing cap sleeves and the neat and pointed collar. The cut is fitted for shape and it has pretty pleat detailing across the shoulders and a ribbon finish that runs down the center seam at the back. The pants are cut long and lean with wide legs and a sharp crease down the center front. The front is flat and the zipper is set at the side so you get no break in the line. Two discreet slit pockets sit at the back. Each leg has a wide 4" cuff and the cuffs have a stiffening built into them to hold their shape and have the pant fall exactly perfect at all times. Excellent condition.

Both pieces are unlined. The top closes with a series of hidden snaps and the pants close with a side, hidden set zipper. Pockets on the back of the pants as show. Both pieces are tagged a Prada 44 but know your size in Prada or check measurements as Prada runs small

1970s Alfred Bosand Printed Floral Ribbon Silk Gown & Cape

I Have A Question: 1970s Alfred Bosand Printed Floral Ribbon Silk Gown & Cape

New York based designer Alfred Bosand was known for his pretty and romantic pieces and this dress with a matching full length scarf piece that can be worn in a variety of ways by is no exception. Both pieces are constructed from a lightweight silk that has a pretty floral design screened onto it's white backdrop. I love how the silk has a 'ribbon' effect woven directly into it. This gives the fabric extra texture and adds to the prettiness of the design. The bodice of the dress is kept simple with a low scooped at both the back and the front. Little silk straps curve up and over each shoulder. From the waist, the skirt cascades to the floor in a column of silk. The outer layer of the skirt floats over an inner silk lining and the effect is very pretty. Over the dress you can add the matching caped scarf piece. This has a built in collar to it that hooks to close and then you can wear it long to the front, the back or flip the ends around your neck. It is a really lovely and pretty set and both pieces are very well made. Excellent condition

Fully lined in white silk with an additional layer of white silky rayon in the bust area. The cape is unlined. The dress closes with a back painted metal zipper and the cape closes with two hook & eye at the collar. Hand finishes

1970s Paganne Three Piece Printed Pink Jersey Tank Top & Pant Set

I Have A Question: 1970s Paganne Three Piece Printed Pink Jersey Tank Top & Pant Set

Paganne pieces for me can be hit or miss so when I find one that I am drawn to I am pretty happy. They were the more affordable version of the Pucci's and Leonard options of the day and still stand up as great little wearable summer peices. This lovely little jersey pant set is quite fabulous and I love the mix of pinks. It is made up of a pair of wide legged pants and a printed tank top with a matching fabric tie for the waist. The fabric is a wash and wear jersey that holds that pretty pink print well and is a dream to travel with. That pink print covers the entire surface of the jersey fabric and I adore how the pattern is used to anchor the pieces together. The pants are fitted through the waist with the legs cut wide and full. The top is cut with with that perfect seventies line and is sexy and easy. It ties at the top of each shoulder so you can control how low the front sits. The original fabric belt adds shape at the waist and finishes the look. Wear together for a strong statement or break up the set and wear them as separates with other pieces in your closet  for lots of styling options. Excellent condition

Both pieces are unlined. The pants slip on with a zipper at the waist and the top slips over the head to wear. The original fabric tie is present. The fabric has stretch so the measurement below show the comfortable range. Except for the waist the bust and hips will probably stretch a teeny bit more if needed

I Have a Question

1960s Emilio Pucci Vivid Printed Velvet Front Zipper Dress

I Have A Question: 1960s Emilio Pucci Vivid Printed Velvet Front Zipper Dress

I am always a little floored by the velvet pieces that Emilio Pucci produced, especially in the hey day of the 1960s. The velvet fabric choice really makes the colors pop and take on a rich, lush feel. The colors really hold with the velvet and this dress is particularly wonderful with its fantastic palette of vivid pinks and purples with pops of other colors. I always feel that this particular color combination is instantly recognizable as being from Pucci and it really is like wearing art done on fabric. The cut of the dress is kept simple and easy to offset all those brilliant colors. It is has a long straight through the body and gradually widens out as it nears the hem. The neck is squared off and wide panels of velvet curve over the shoulders. It closes down the front with a zipper closure that you can wear all the way up or lower to show a little more skin. Great condition with some minor notes to review below.

The dress is fully lined in a cream tissue silk and closes with a front painted metal zipper. Note that the zipper has the teeniest bit of "stick" to it. I see some smudges on the lower front skirt. Please review the provided photos. Perhaps the lightest of fading to the velvet under the arms but nothing that detracts or is noticeable once on. Priced accordingly. The fabric is signed throughout.

I Have a Question

1960s Emilio Pucci Printed Pink Silk Sleeveless Top & Wide Legged Pant Set w Silk Belt

I Have A Question: 1960s Emilio Pucci Printed Pink Silk Sleeveless Top & Wide Legged Pant Set w Silk Belt

The print that covers this gorgeous pant set is classic Pucci and the mix of pinks that have been used make it bright and happy feeling. Both the top and the pants are made out of a light silk and both pieces have been lined in a pale pink silk chiffon. Later pieces skip this extra step of lining the silks and it shows how high the quality was on these earlier pieces especially. The pieces are light and easy to wear and even lined they weigh virtually nothing. This light weight silk is a very difficult fabric to deal with and it is a testament to his atelier that the workmanship on this set is so finely done especially when you realize it is almost entirely done by hand. The pants are cut to skim over the hips with a softly gathered seam that runs around the lower hip. The legs are set into that seam and fall to the hem with a wide cut leg. They are slightly cropped depending on your height and this combined with that seam around the low hip and their width, gives them the illusion of being a skirt until you move and see that they are pants. The top slips on to wear and has a loose and easy cut through the body. Wide straps curve up and around each shoulder. The straps, hem of each pant and the bottom of the top are all finished in one of his wide signature border in a contrasting print. This set even came with its original wide pink silk sash that you can wrap and cinch in the waist like I have here, or use it around the neck or even wrap it onto a turban. The colors are fabulous and it is so versatile since you can wear it together as a full set or as separates mixed with other pieces in your wardrobe. Excellent condition

Both pieces are fully lined in a pink silk chiffon. The top slips on to wear and the pants close with a hand set painted metal zipper. All the edges are finished by hand.

1960s Donald Brooks Fabulous Floral Print Top Stitched Coat

I Have A Question: 1960s Donald Brooks Fabulous Floral Print Top Stitched Coat

Donald Brooks launched his main label in 1964, added a Boutique line in 1971, and then closed up shop completely in 1973. This wonderful Donald Brooks coat is from his first, main line. The fabric and print are amazing. That huge splash of floral across that coat give it such drama and yet it is still pretty and chic. The lines are a nod to the classic double breasted trench and that fabric is just fantastic. The shape and flared line are all created by the seaming. The bodice of the coat is cut to be fitted with long sleeves and a huge rounded collar. The waist curves in and it has its original belt that you can cinch to add even more shape and then the lower part of the coat gradually flares out. It works equally as well without the belt so you have the option of using it or not. Big matte black buttons run down the front in a double row and each sleeve has two smaller version as decorations. I love the flapped top set pocket details on each hip. The perfect finish is the quilting to the cotton fabric -  the entire thing is top stitched in horizontal rows of black thread from top to bottom. What an extraordinary piece. Excellent condition

Fully lined in a red silk crepe. It closes with  the double row of buttons down the front, with each cuff having two decorative buttons that are slightly smaller. The belt shows wear to the leather backing but presents as excellent condition from the front

c1978-1985 Chanel Red Boucle Cropped Jacket & Skirt Suit

I Have A Question: c1978-1985 Chanel Red Boucle Cropped Jacket & Skirt Suit

The first ready-to-wear Chanel collection launched in 1978 and I believe this to be from those first few years. It has all of the hallmarks of the Chanel suit - the chain at the inner hem, the vertically stitched inner silk lining used during this time period and fine workmanship. It is made out of that proprietary Chanel boucle that gives the fabric structure and stability along the weft in one direction and yet gives it an almost bias cut effect along the other direction. This also is what contributes to the fit that Chanel suits have and how comfortable they feel once on. The fabric has movement and yet retains its shape at the same time. The skirt is just above the knee with a straight , slim cut. The jacket is a classic cropped Chanel jacket with two pockets at the front. Each is highlighted with a looped fringe finish. The jacket buttons at the front with classic double C logo buttons in gold and black. That same looped ended fringe highlights the neckline. Excellent condition with two very minor motes to review below.

Both pieces are lined in a red tissue silk that is stitched in long vertical panels in the jacket. The lining is entirely set and finished by hand. The skirt closes with a painted metal zipper and a flat hook and eye at the waist. There is an extender at the waist but it does not appear that the skirt was altered other wise in anyway do this may be original. The jacket buttons to close down the front. There is a small spot in the boucle that looks like it had a brooch perhaps and has widened the weft slightly. Please review the photos. The signature gold chain runs along the inner edge of the lining. Hand finished. Tagged a vintage 40

I Have a Question

A/W 1989 Antony Price Bottle Green Velvet Dress w Removeable Bows

I Have A Question: A/W 1989 Antony Price Bottle Green Velvet Dress w Removeable Bows

Antony Price launched his self-named label in 1979 and quickly became know as one of the more glamorous designer of the eighties. His work tended to have a mix of femininity, high glamour and edginess. His designs showed off the body and often had dramatic, over-the-top finishing touches. You see an example of that on this dress from his Fall 1989 collection with its two large bow details that sit on the back of each draped shoulder. On the runway they were stiffened to heighten their drama but for retail the bows are softer and drape beautifully. The front of the bodice is cut low and wide across the neck. From there the velvet curves around the shoulder and and each shoulder is tied into a bow of matching velvet. You can wear these at the top of the shoulder, have them pushed down to drape and fall towards the back and have them act as a weight and show more skin there. Or, you can choose to not wear them at all for a more traditional feeling line. The back edge of the neckline is finished in elastic so it sits properly no matter where you decide to place the bows. The fabric is a deep bottle green cotton velvet whose color seems to be illuminated from within. The waist nips in and the skirt is cut to be slim and fitted. It is hard to really show off this dress on a mannequin to its full advantage but on a proper girl it is even more spectacular. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a black silky rayon and closes with a back metal and nylon zipper. Appears unworn. Note that the provided reference photos are taken from the runway footage. Apologies for their low quality. You can see the dress in the video at about the 14:00 mark

Pre-Fall 2008 Stella McCartney Silk Chiffon One Shoulder Dress

I Have A Question: Pre-Fall 2008 Stella McCartney Silk Chiffon One Shoulder Dress

The bias cut combined with silk chiffon layers are what give this dress its Greek Goddess feel. Stella McCartney makes exquisite evening pieces and I love this one from the pre-fall 2008 collection. Pre-fall and pre-spring collections are always produced in smaller numbers and harder to acquire. This dress was a favorite on the red carpet in the 2008 season and was seen on both Scarlett Johansson and Poppy Montgomery. The dress is made of a green silk chiffon in a soft hue. It is cut on the bias with a second layer in a matching silk acting as its lining. The fabric choice allow it to drape beautifully on the body. It is long and sleek while you stand but once you move you get a wonderful fullness in the skirt. The way it is cut is very couture in feel and it has a definitive Madame Gres reference feel to it. The entire dress is suspended from the tie at the shoulder. I love the pleating through the bodice that extends down into the waist and then softly opens into the skirt. Excellent condition.

The skirt is fully lined in a second layer of matching colored silk chiffon that is also bias cut. The bodice is lined a a matching silk. It closes with a hidden side zipper and ties at the top of the one shoulder. It is tagged a modern 40 but McCartney pieces fit small so you should know your sizing in this label or make sure to check the measurements below

Bust: 16" flat across from side seam to side seam

Rare c1961-63 Mary Quant Mod Green & Black Mini Dress

I Have A Question: Rare c1961-63 Mary Quant Mod Green & Black Mini Dress

Mary Quant become famous for her mini dresses in the 1960s, with some even attribute her as inventing them, though she always maintained that she took the style from the girls on the street and popularized it. The second label in this dress from Olgilvy's and the color of the Quant label are both clues that this is an early Quant piece. It is interesting to note that Olgilvy's was noted as being the first shop in Canada to bring in the "Chelsea Street look" that was so prominent with the youth movement of the time.

The dress is made of a mix of two colored wool fabrics - a black and a deep forest green. This fabric choice really holds the sculpted A-line shape perfectly. It is cut in a sleek little mini dress with that perfect British Mod feel that Quant as known for. The dress is meant to define and highlight the shape of the dress, rather then the body under it. The neck is scooped and the entire top portion of the bodice is a deep green. The skirt is black and cut in a gradual widening at the hem and slits up each side. It lands just above the knee but the slits give it the feel of a true mini as you walk and I suspect these were sold like this so the client could shorten as low as they dared. I love the two little flap decorations at the waist that give it a little extra detailing and an interesting line at the waist seam. Excellent condition.

Unlined and closes with a back zipper. The flaps pockets are decorative only. The slits up each side are 14" high from the hem up

Bust: 18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 16.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 20.5" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have a Question

1960s Bill Tice Rich Garnet Velvet & Embroidered Floral Dress

I Have A Question: 1960s Bill Tice Rich Garnet Velvet & Embroidered Floral Dress

Though I usually hunt for those slinky nylon jersey dresses with the gold accents from Bill Tice, I could not resist this amazing velvet with an embroidered design. It is made of a cotton velvet done in a deep jewel toned burgundy. The color is very rich in feel and acts as the perfect backdrop to the off-white thread that makes up the embroidered design. The design is set to highlight the cut of the dress with a dense application of it around the collar and shoulders, circling the widest part of each sleeve and then highlighting the tiers of the full length skirt. I love the incredibly fill cut sleeves and how these pouf out above a long cuff. Each of those cuffs has five velvet covered buttons and velvet loops to close. The neckline is cut high, the bodice skims over the torso and a matching velvet belt cinched in the waist. Below that the skirt falls to the floor with a fuller second tier set at just about the knee to give it added detail and shape. A detail to note is that some of the areas within the embroidered design actually surround open cut outs so you get this tiny peak of skin here and there. Even better in person and on a real girl. Excellent condition.

Unlined and closes at the back with a painted metal and nylon zipper. Buttons at each cuff. Has its original matching self-backed velvet tie belt

I Have a Question

1960s Richard Tam Jon Mandl Unusual Brocade Print Dress

I Have A Question: 1960s Richard Tam Jon Mandl Unusual Brocade Print Dress

This fabulous dress is from Richard Tam, a San Fransisco based designer who ran his own West Coast couture house for seven years, making clothing in luxurious crepes, silks and chiffon for women like Ethel Kennedy, Dinah Shore, Polly Bergen and Lena Horne. His first collection was for Spring 1965. Pieces from him are held in the San Fransisco Fine Arts Museum and while he did not design long, his pieces had a real flare to them. This dress for example would have been a collaboration with Jon Mandl for the print. The print has an almost Egyptian feel to it with its bands of scenes that depict the daily life of some long ago village. This is all beautifully woven through a silk brocade and I love the unusual color combination of a purple mixed with an orange. The dress is sleeveless with a notched neckline. The fullness of the skirt is created with a series of wide, flat inverted pleats that run aound the waist. These are closed and angled to create the seams and fit of the bodice and then open out to create the fullness of the skirt. Excellent condition

The top is lined in a cotton gazaar and the skirt is unlined. It closes with a back, hand set painted metal and nylon zipper. Hand finishes.

I Have a Question

c.1984 Arnold Scaasi One Shoulder Green Draped Chiffon Dress

I Have A Question: c.1984 Arnold Scaasi One Shoulder Green Draped Chiffon Dress

This chiffon dress with its one shoulder silhouette from Arnold Scaasi's ready-to-wear line is stunning. Scaasi worked under Charles James at the start of his career and many of his gowns reflect this early influence. His boutique line was launched in 1984 and was high end ready to wear and very expensive. Pieces from it often have a demi-couture level finish and really are an extension of his couture line.

The one shoulder cut of this dress gives it a wonderful Grecian feel. The asymmetrical draping on the opposite side from the single shoulder also make it feel a little different from the designs you usually see in a single shoulder dress. I love how the curves of the dress work in combination with each other and make the design beautiful to look at no natter what angle you see it from. The skirt flows to the floor in an asymmetrical line that is cut so that it sits longer at the back and at one side. The other side of the skirt drapes up on a softly cut and draped angle that allows for a flash of leg when you walk or move. This asymmetrical cut also creates contrast and balance to the bare shoulder on the other side. The chiffon used on the skirt is bias cut so it flows and moves with you. The bodice of the dress is cut to follow your curves and the hand placed, gathered chiffon is draped down and over to create a flattering line. This dress really moves wonderfully when on and is quite beautiful. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a matching green tissue silk that is all hand set. Closes with a side hidden set zipper. Lightly boned through the bodice. The skirt has an inner silk layer with two layers of the chiffon over that. Note the color is a little less deep a green in person as how it photoed.

Bust: to 17.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Natural waist: to 14" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: to 21" flat across from side seam to side seam inside
Bodice: 18" from top of shoulder to dropped waist

I Have a Question

1970s Halston One Shoulder Green Draped Jersey Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Halston One Shoulder Green Draped Jersey Dress

I am always on the look out for this style of dress by Halston. It is perhaps the most iconic of all of the Halston silhouettes and in 2016 a red version of this exact dress entered modern day fashion history when Kate Moss wore its twin on the red carpet at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. This was issued on a variety of colors and this one is of course the green version.

Halston was a master at this cut. There is a certain sexiness caused by the illusion of having the entire dress suspended by one hook at the shoulder. It gives the sense that undoing that hook would cause the entire dress to drop in a puddle around you (which it would). It is constructed from two attached layers.  The inner dress is cut from the same synthetic jersey and skims over the body in a long sheath. This inner part of the dress has a high slit cut into the side that travels up the side of the leg opposite to the draped side. Attached to that inner sheath lies a draped panel of jersey that is suspended from the shoulder. It falls  from that shoulder down and over the front and the back of the dress. This dress hooks into place at the shoulder and the jersey cascades loosely down and over the inner layer for the ultimate Grecian goddess feel.

Tagged a vintage Med.

Bust: 17-19" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: to 20" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have a Question

1970s Stavropoulos Couture Layered Bias Cut Silk Chiiffon Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Stavropoulos Couture Layered Bias Cut Silk Chiiffon Dress

George Stavropoulos was an amazing designer and his work is extremely overlooked in my opinion. He was known for his evening wear and his signature looks often involved draping and the use of multiple layers of silk cut on the bias. He did not like overt, flashy ornamentation and instead focused on cut and fabric to convey the beauty of each piece. It was said that his gowns "seemed to float on air". He launched his label in 1960 and soon was dressing women like Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Kennedy, Barbra Streisand and Maria Callas. The majority of his gowns are almost entirely made by hand and to couture standards. By the early 1980s a gown by him started at around $8500 and they went up in cost from there - that starting price point equals to around $26,000 in today's dollars. So when you buy a vintage Stavropoulos gown you are getting incredible value for your money. The only reason many of his gowns are not considered Haute Couture is because he was not an official member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.

This is a wonderful example of his work. The outermost layer of silk is a beautiful pale lavender that sits over additional inner layers of the pale blue and cream. The body of the gown is made up of five full layers of the finest, lightest silk chiffon. Each layer is bias cut and floats over the one underneath it. The three most inner layers are an off-white colored silk. Then there is a pale baby blue layer, and the final exterior layer is that pale, pastel purple color. This gives the gown a remarkable and unique color because the colors underneath each show through the chiffon. It is entirely cut on the bias. This is also a feat of technical achievement to have all those bias cut layers sit over each other so perfectly. The sleeves are very full and each poufs out above the wrist and are finished with beaded applique work at the cuff. Both the front and back plunge into a V. Another spray of hand done appliqued bead work curves over one side of the bust and down to the waist towards the other side. It is a work of art, very romantic and ethereal in feel and even better in person then how it photoed.  Presents as excellent condition but has some small flaws - please review the condition notes below.

The inner layers of silk act as the lining and there are a total of 5 layers of silk as described above. It closes with a back hand set, painted metal zipper. There are some  tiny pulls, very faint water spots, smudges and small variation on color scattered across the front and areas across the back, a faint spot on one arm and at the front. Once on the amount of fabric effectively camouflages these but they are present and it is important to note. I have photoed the areas and reduced the price accordingly. If you don't mind that your vintage is not 'perfect' this is a remarkable dress for this price point. I have had it lightly cleaned when it came into the studio as I do everything, and some may come out more with additional round of cleaning. The bias cut will allow for a variety of sizes.

Sleeves: approx 25" and will come up slightly once the cuff is closed
Shoulders: slightly inset and 13" across
Bust: 16-18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 12-15" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: open
Length: approx 60" from shoulder to hem and will come up slightly once on due to the bias cut
