I Have A Question: c.1998 Sully Bonnelly Red & Gold Floral Strapless Trained Dress

The designer of this dress, Sully Bonnelly, had a bit of a hey day in the late 1990s. He worked as a designer for the houses of Bill Blass and Eli Tahari before launching his own collection in 1998. It retailed at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and other better stores around the world. He eventually went on to Oscar de la Renta. The pieces from his own brief label from this time period were of very good quality. This dress is from that time period.

Yards and yards of brilliant floral silk brocade with gold thread accents have been used to make up this gown. The silk he chose is just incredible. It has a coral red base with beautiful flowers woven through the silk. Layered over that base are gold accents that give the gown a subtle glow. The fabric choice allows it to hold the shape and silhouette without having to add any additional underpinnings. The bodice is strapless and fitted with curved front seams to follow and highlight the curves of your body to below the hip. The skirt flows from the bodice with no seam at the waist to break the line and is cut to sit sleek and simple at the front and then at the back it is wonderfully dramatic and very full. The back skirt is trained so that it flows out behind you in a dramatic swoop of fabric. The back dips into an almost impossible low V to leave a bare expanse of skin. Those details combined with that spectacular floral print make it one of the best gowns I have seen from this time period. The color, the print, the fabric and the cut all add up to a wonderful, beautiful gown. Excellent condition.

Fully interlined in a red silk satin through the bodice and torso, the skirt is interlined with a white silk organza. The bodice has an additional lining in the same fabric and is boned and. The dress closes with a hidden set back metal zipper. The inner bodice closes with a hook & eye and a flat hook at the attached waist stay.

Bust: 18.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 15" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: open
Length: 56" to the front hem from the top of the bodice, 66" to the back hem

I Have A Question: Recent Giambattista Valli Impulse Red Floral Strapless Dress

This came in with a a clothing lot and I thought that it was super cute for a diffusion line piece. It was designed by Giambattista Valli for Macy's Impulse and is based on one of his best known designs. The dress is strapless with a built in under garment though the bust. The silk looking chiffon is draped over the bodice and is finished with a bow at the front. It comes with its original black ribbon that you tie into place for a pretty contrast as it trails to the hem of the dress. I have shown it at the front but you could tie it to trail down at the back as well. The skirt falls to the floor in a pretty cascade of rose covered fabric. Excellent condition

Fully lined in a black rayon and closes with a back zipper. Original black ribbon tie and fully built in underwire cups. Tagged a modern 4

Bust: 14.5-16" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have A Question: *NEW PRICE DROP* 1960s Malcolm Starr Silk, Sequin, Beads & Crystal Embellished Dress

Elinor Simmons designed for the Malcolm Starr label from the early 1960s to 1972 and you can see her handiwork in this classic Starr piece with its almost sculptural lines and elaborate bead, sequin and rhinestone work. The dress itself has a simple A-line cut with capped sleeves and a high scooped neck. The upper portion of the shoulders and sleeves are finished in a silk organza that is the same color as the more shaped silk used through the body. Onto that is absolutely beautiful hand done detailing that runs across the neck and on each sleeve. The bead work and rhinestones here really catch the light and it is quite beautiful. The bodice skims over the torso with darling little capped sleeves and a high set waist line. The skirt comes out from under the seam at the waist in a widening curve of fabric and I love the fullness of it. The silk used has a almost polished cotton finish to it but with a touch more texture. The fabric choice really holds the shape of the dress beautifully and the color is wonderful. I love that it has pockets hidden away at the inset seams that run down the front. It is really a lovely dress. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a pale green silk and closes with a low painted back metal zipper. It is open between the zipper adn the hook at the neck It looks to have been worn very little if at all. Note that color is a little more of a 'celery' then how it photoed. The elaborate rhinestone, sequins and beads on the upper bodice are all set by hand.

F/W 2002 Prada Runway Look 19 Navy Top & Black Pants Set

I Have A Question: F/W 2002 Prada Runway Look 19 Navy Top & Black Pants Set

This is the twin outfit of the full runway look, Look 19, from the fall 2002 Prada show and it was shown on Carmen Kass on the runway. Style.com's review of this show in part said said:

In a show that was densely layered with references to the history of fashion, Prada cut a strong, curvaceous and erotically charged line to give grown-ups a whole new reason to buy. ... Revisiting structured tailoring—which is where she began in the '90s—was only one of her ideas.  Prada referenced many of her own past collections, from her bourgeois ladylike phase to her militaristic moments and her love of vintage lingerie. But her achievement was in making something inspiringly new out of confronting a personal taboo. "I was fed up with people saying I can't do sexy clothes!" she stated backstage. It was said with a laugh, but the designer has done nothing less than change the fashion agenda overnight.

This is being sold as a set just as it walked the runway. The  top is made of a beautiful silk, matte satin finish. The blue is that signature Prada blue that is so deep it almost looks black in certain lights. The work on it is amazing and it is cut to perfection. I love the dramatic poufing cap sleeves and the neat and pointed collar. The cut is fitted for shape and it has pretty pleat detailing across the shoulders and a ribbon finish that runs down the center seam at the back. The pants are cut long and lean with wide legs and a sharp crease down the center front. The front is flat and the zipper is set at the side so you get no break in the line. Two discreet slit pockets sit at the back. Each leg has a wide 4" cuff and the cuffs have a stiffening built into them to hold their shape and have the pant fall exactly perfect at all times. Excellent condition.

Both pieces are unlined. The top closes with a series of hidden snaps and the pants close with a side, hidden set zipper. Pockets on the back of the pants as show. Both pieces are tagged a Prada 44 but know your size in Prada or check measurements as Prada runs small

1970s Alfred Bosand Printed Floral Ribbon Silk Gown & Cape

I Have A Question: 1970s Alfred Bosand Printed Floral Ribbon Silk Gown & Cape

New York based designer Alfred Bosand was known for his pretty and romantic pieces and this dress with a matching full length scarf piece that can be worn in a variety of ways by is no exception. Both pieces are constructed from a lightweight silk that has a pretty floral design screened onto it's white backdrop. I love how the silk has a 'ribbon' effect woven directly into it. This gives the fabric extra texture and adds to the prettiness of the design. The bodice of the dress is kept simple with a low scooped at both the back and the front. Little silk straps curve up and over each shoulder. From the waist, the skirt cascades to the floor in a column of silk. The outer layer of the skirt floats over an inner silk lining and the effect is very pretty. Over the dress you can add the matching caped scarf piece. This has a built in collar to it that hooks to close and then you can wear it long to the front, the back or flip the ends around your neck. It is a really lovely and pretty set and both pieces are very well made. Excellent condition

Fully lined in white silk with an additional layer of white silky rayon in the bust area. The cape is unlined. The dress closes with a back painted metal zipper and the cape closes with two hook & eye at the collar. Hand finishes

I Have a Question

1970s Paganne Three Piece Printed Pink Jersey Tank Top & Pant Set

I Have A Question: 1970s Paganne Three Piece Printed Pink Jersey Tank Top & Pant Set

Paganne pieces for me can be hit or miss so when I find one that I am drawn to I am pretty happy. They were the more affordable version of the Pucci's and Leonard options of the day and still stand up as great little wearable summer peices. This lovely little jersey pant set is quite fabulous and I love the mix of pinks. It is made up of a pair of wide legged pants and a printed tank top with a matching fabric tie for the waist. The fabric is a wash and wear jersey that holds that pretty pink print well and is a dream to travel with. That pink print covers the entire surface of the jersey fabric and I adore how the pattern is used to anchor the pieces together. The pants are fitted through the waist with the legs cut wide and full. The top is cut with with that perfect seventies line and is sexy and easy. It ties at the top of each shoulder so you can control how low the front sits. The original fabric belt adds shape at the waist and finishes the look. Wear together for a strong statement or break up the set and wear them as separates with other pieces in your closet  for lots of styling options. Excellent condition

Both pieces are unlined. The pants slip on with a zipper at the waist and the top slips over the head to wear. The original fabric tie is present. The fabric has stretch so the measurement below show the comfortable range. Except for the waist the bust and hips will probably stretch a teeny bit more if needed

Top
Bust: 18-20" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist-hip: 16-20" flat across from side seam to side seam
Length: approx 25" from neck to hem with adjustable shoulder ties

I Have a Question

1960s Emilio Pucci Vivid Printed Velvet Front Zipper Dress

I Have A Question: 1960s Emilio Pucci Vivid Printed Velvet Front Zipper Dress

I am always a little floored by the velvet pieces that Emilio Pucci produced, especially in the hey day of the 1960s. The velvet fabric choice really makes the colors pop and take on a rich, lush feel. The colors really hold with the velvet and this dress is particularly wonderful with its fantastic palette of vivid pinks and purples with pops of other colors. I always feel that this particular color combination is instantly recognizable as being from Pucci and it really is like wearing art done on fabric. The cut of the dress is kept simple and easy to offset all those brilliant colors. It is has a long straight through the body and gradually widens out as it nears the hem. The neck is squared off and wide panels of velvet curve over the shoulders. It closes down the front with a zipper closure that you can wear all the way up or lower to show a little more skin. Great condition with some minor notes to review below.

The dress is fully lined in a cream tissue silk and closes with a front painted metal zipper. Note that the zipper has the teeniest bit of "stick" to it. I see some smudges on the lower front skirt. Please review the provided photos. Perhaps the lightest of fading to the velvet under the arms but nothing that detracts or is noticeable once on. Priced accordingly. The fabric is signed throughout.

I Have a Question

1960s Emilio Pucci Printed Pink Silk Sleeveless Top & Wide Legged Pant Set w Silk Belt

I Have A Question: 1960s Emilio Pucci Printed Pink Silk Sleeveless Top & Wide Legged Pant Set w Silk Belt

The print that covers this gorgeous pant set is classic Pucci and the mix of pinks that have been used make it bright and happy feeling. Both the top and the pants are made out of a light silk and both pieces have been lined in a pale pink silk chiffon. Later pieces skip this extra step of lining the silks and it shows how high the quality was on these earlier pieces especially. The pieces are light and easy to wear and even lined they weigh virtually nothing. This light weight silk is a very difficult fabric to deal with and it is a testament to his atelier that the workmanship on this set is so finely done especially when you realize it is almost entirely done by hand. The pants are cut to skim over the hips with a softly gathered seam that runs around the lower hip. The legs are set into that seam and fall to the hem with a wide cut leg. They are slightly cropped depending on your height and this combined with that seam around the low hip and their width, gives them the illusion of being a skirt until you move and see that they are pants. The top slips on to wear and has a loose and easy cut through the body. Wide straps curve up and around each shoulder. The straps, hem of each pant and the bottom of the top are all finished in one of his wide signature border in a contrasting print. This set even came with its original wide pink silk sash that you can wrap and cinch in the waist like I have here, or use it around the neck or even wrap it onto a turban. The colors are fabulous and it is so versatile since you can wear it together as a full set or as separates mixed with other pieces in your wardrobe. Excellent condition

Both pieces are fully lined in a pink silk chiffon. The top slips on to wear and the pants close with a hand set painted metal zipper. All the edges are finished by hand.

1960s Donald Brooks Fabulous Floral Print Top Stitched Coat

I Have A Question: 1960s Donald Brooks Fabulous Floral Print Top Stitched Coat

Donald Brooks launched his main label in 1964, added a Boutique line in 1971, and then closed up shop completely in 1973. This wonderful Donald Brooks coat is from his first, main line. The fabric and print are amazing. That huge splash of floral across that coat give it such drama and yet it is still pretty and chic. The lines are a nod to the classic double breasted trench and that fabric is just fantastic. The shape and flared line are all created by the seaming. The bodice of the coat is cut to be fitted with long sleeves and a huge rounded collar. The waist curves in and it has its original belt that you can cinch to add even more shape and then the lower part of the coat gradually flares out. It works equally as well without the belt so you have the option of using it or not. Big matte black buttons run down the front in a double row and each sleeve has two smaller version as decorations. I love the flapped top set pocket details on each hip. The perfect finish is the quilting to the cotton fabric -  the entire thing is top stitched in horizontal rows of black thread from top to bottom. What an extraordinary piece. Excellent condition

Fully lined in a red silk crepe. It closes with  the double row of buttons down the front, with each cuff having two decorative buttons that are slightly smaller. The belt shows wear to the leather backing but presents as excellent condition from the front

c1978-1985 Chanel Red Boucle Cropped Jacket & Skirt Suit

I Have A Question: c1978-1985 Chanel Red Boucle Cropped Jacket & Skirt Suit

The first ready-to-wear Chanel collection launched in 1978 and I believe this to be from those first few years. It has all of the hallmarks of the Chanel suit - the chain at the inner hem, the vertically stitched inner silk lining used during this time period and fine workmanship. It is made out of that proprietary Chanel boucle that gives the fabric structure and stability along the weft in one direction and yet gives it an almost bias cut effect along the other direction. This also is what contributes to the fit that Chanel suits have and how comfortable they feel once on. The fabric has movement and yet retains its shape at the same time. The skirt is just above the knee with a straight , slim cut. The jacket is a classic cropped Chanel jacket with two pockets at the front. Each is highlighted with a looped fringe finish. The jacket buttons at the front with classic double C logo buttons in gold and black. That same looped ended fringe highlights the neckline. Excellent condition with two very minor motes to review below.

Both pieces are lined in a red tissue silk that is stitched in long vertical panels in the jacket. The lining is entirely set and finished by hand. The skirt closes with a painted metal zipper and a flat hook and eye at the waist. There is an extender at the waist but it does not appear that the skirt was altered other wise in anyway do this may be original. The jacket buttons to close down the front. There is a small spot in the boucle that looks like it had a brooch perhaps and has widened the weft slightly. Please review the photos. The signature gold chain runs along the inner edge of the lining. Hand finished. Tagged a vintage 40

I Have a Question

A/W 1989 Antony Price Bottle Green Velvet Dress w Removeable Bows

I Have A Question: A/W 1989 Antony Price Bottle Green Velvet Dress w Removeable Bows

Antony Price launched his self-named label in 1979 and quickly became know as one of the more glamorous designer of the eighties. His work tended to have a mix of femininity, high glamour and edginess. His designs showed off the body and often had dramatic, over-the-top finishing touches. You see an example of that on this dress from his Fall 1989 collection with its two large bow details that sit on the back of each draped shoulder. On the runway they were stiffened to heighten their drama but for retail the bows are softer and drape beautifully. The front of the bodice is cut low and wide across the neck. From there the velvet curves around the shoulder and and each shoulder is tied into a bow of matching velvet. You can wear these at the top of the shoulder, have them pushed down to drape and fall towards the back and have them act as a weight and show more skin there. Or, you can choose to not wear them at all for a more traditional feeling line. The back edge of the neckline is finished in elastic so it sits properly no matter where you decide to place the bows. The fabric is a deep bottle green cotton velvet whose color seems to be illuminated from within. The waist nips in and the skirt is cut to be slim and fitted. It is hard to really show off this dress on a mannequin to its full advantage but on a proper girl it is even more spectacular. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a black silky rayon and closes with a back metal and nylon zipper. Appears unworn. Note that the provided reference photos are taken from the runway footage. Apologies for their low quality. You can see the dress in the video at about the 14:00 mark

Pre-Fall 2008 Stella McCartney Silk Chiffon One Shoulder Dress

I Have A Question: Pre-Fall 2008 Stella McCartney Silk Chiffon One Shoulder Dress

The bias cut combined with silk chiffon layers are what give this dress its Greek Goddess feel. Stella McCartney makes exquisite evening pieces and I love this one from the pre-fall 2008 collection. Pre-fall and pre-spring collections are always produced in smaller numbers and harder to acquire. This dress was a favorite on the red carpet in the 2008 season and was seen on both Scarlett Johansson and Poppy Montgomery. The dress is made of a green silk chiffon in a soft hue. It is cut on the bias with a second layer in a matching silk acting as its lining. The fabric choice allow it to drape beautifully on the body. It is long and sleek while you stand but once you move you get a wonderful fullness in the skirt. The way it is cut is very couture in feel and it has a definitive Madame Gres reference feel to it. The entire dress is suspended from the tie at the shoulder. I love the pleating through the bodice that extends down into the waist and then softly opens into the skirt. Excellent condition.

The skirt is fully lined in a second layer of matching colored silk chiffon that is also bias cut. The bodice is lined a a matching silk. It closes with a hidden side zipper and ties at the top of the one shoulder. It is tagged a modern 40 but McCartney pieces fit small so you should know your sizing in this label or make sure to check the measurements below

Rare c1961-63 Mary Quant Mod Green & Black Mini Dress

I Have A Question: Rare c1961-63 Mary Quant Mod Green & Black Mini Dress

Mary Quant become famous for her mini dresses in the 1960s, with some even attribute her as inventing them, though she always maintained that she took the style from the girls on the street and popularized it. The second label in this dress from Olgilvy's and the color of the Quant label are both clues that this is an early Quant piece. It is interesting to note that Olgilvy's was noted as being the first shop in Canada to bring in the "Chelsea Street look" that was so prominent with the youth movement of the time.

The dress is made of a mix of two colored wool fabrics - a black and a deep forest green. This fabric choice really holds the sculpted A-line shape perfectly. It is cut in a sleek little mini dress with that perfect British Mod feel that Quant as known for. The dress is meant to define and highlight the shape of the dress, rather then the body under it. The neck is scooped and the entire top portion of the bodice is a deep green. The skirt is black and cut in a gradual widening at the hem and slits up each side. It lands just above the knee but the slits give it the feel of a true mini as you walk and I suspect these were sold like this so the client could shorten as low as they dared. I love the two little flap decorations at the waist that give it a little extra detailing and an interesting line at the waist seam. Excellent condition.

Unlined and closes with a back zipper. The flaps pockets are decorative only. The slits up each side are 14" high from the hem up

Bust: 18" flat across from side seam to side seam

1960s Bill Tice Rich Garnet Velvet & Embroidered Floral Dress

I Have A Question: 1960s Bill Tice Rich Garnet Velvet & Embroidered Floral Dress

Though I usually hunt for those slinky nylon jersey dresses with the gold accents from Bill Tice, I could not resist this amazing velvet with an embroidered design. It is made of a cotton velvet done in a deep jewel toned burgundy. The color is very rich in feel and acts as the perfect backdrop to the off-white thread that makes up the embroidered design. The design is set to highlight the cut of the dress with a dense application of it around the collar and shoulders, circling the widest part of each sleeve and then highlighting the tiers of the full length skirt. I love the incredibly fill cut sleeves and how these pouf out above a long cuff. Each of those cuffs has five velvet covered buttons and velvet loops to close. The neckline is cut high, the bodice skims over the torso and a matching velvet belt cinched in the waist. Below that the skirt falls to the floor with a fuller second tier set at just about the knee to give it added detail and shape. A detail to note is that some of the areas within the embroidered design actually surround open cut outs so you get this tiny peak of skin here and there. Even better in person and on a real girl. Excellent condition.

Unlined and closes at the back with a painted metal and nylon zipper. Buttons at each cuff. Has its original matching self-backed velvet tie belt

1960s Richard Tam Jon Mandl Unusual Brocade Print Dress

I Have A Question: 1960s Richard Tam Jon Mandl Unusual Brocade Print Dress

This fabulous dress is from Richard Tam, a San Fransisco based designer who ran his own West Coast couture house for seven years, making clothing in luxurious crepes, silks and chiffon for women like Ethel Kennedy, Dinah Shore, Polly Bergen and Lena Horne. His first collection was for Spring 1965. Pieces from him are held in the San Fransisco Fine Arts Museum and while he did not design long, his pieces had a real flare to them. This dress for example would have been a collaboration with Jon Mandl for the print. The print has an almost Egyptian feel to it with its bands of scenes that depict the daily life of some long ago village. This is all beautifully woven through a silk brocade and I love the unusual color combination of a purple mixed with an orange. The dress is sleeveless with a notched neckline. The fullness of the skirt is created with a series of wide, flat inverted pleats that run aound the waist. These are closed and angled to create the seams and fit of the bodice and then open out to create the fullness of the skirt. Excellent condition

The top is lined in a cotton gazaar and the skirt is unlined. It closes with a back, hand set painted metal and nylon zipper. Hand finishes.

c.1984 Arnold Scaasi One Shoulder Green Draped Chiffon Dress

I Have A Question: c.1984 Arnold Scaasi One Shoulder Green Draped Chiffon Dress

This chiffon dress with its one shoulder silhouette from Arnold Scaasi's ready-to-wear line is stunning. Scaasi worked under Charles James at the start of his career and many of his gowns reflect this early influence. His boutique line was launched in 1984 and was high end ready to wear and very expensive. Pieces from it often have a demi-couture level finish and really are an extension of his couture line.

The one shoulder cut of this dress gives it a wonderful Grecian feel. The asymmetrical draping on the opposite side from the single shoulder also make it feel a little different from the designs you usually see in a single shoulder dress. I love how the curves of the dress work in combination with each other and make the design beautiful to look at no natter what angle you see it from. The skirt flows to the floor in an asymmetrical line that is cut so that it sits longer at the back and at one side. The other side of the skirt drapes up on a softly cut and draped angle that allows for a flash of leg when you walk or move. This asymmetrical cut also creates contrast and balance to the bare shoulder on the other side. The chiffon used on the skirt is bias cut so it flows and moves with you. The bodice of the dress is cut to follow your curves and the hand placed, gathered chiffon is draped down and over to create a flattering line. This dress really moves wonderfully when on and is quite beautiful. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a matching green tissue silk that is all hand set. Closes with a side hidden set zipper. Lightly boned through the bodice. The skirt has an inner silk layer with two layers of the chiffon over that. Note the color is a little less deep a green in person as how it photoed.

Bust: to 17.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Natural waist: to 14" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: to 21" flat across from side seam to side seam inside
Bodice: 18" from top of shoulder to dropped waist

I Have a Question

1970s Halston One Shoulder Green Draped Jersey Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Halston One Shoulder Green Draped Jersey Dress

I am always on the look out for this style of dress by Halston. It is perhaps the most iconic of all of the Halston silhouettes and in 2016 a red version of this exact dress entered modern day fashion history when Kate Moss wore its twin on the red carpet at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. This was issued on a variety of colors and this one is of course the green version.

Halston was a master at this cut. There is a certain sexiness caused by the illusion of having the entire dress suspended by one hook at the shoulder. It gives the sense that undoing that hook would cause the entire dress to drop in a puddle around you (which it would). It is constructed from two attached layers.  The inner dress is cut from the same synthetic jersey and skims over the body in a long sheath. This inner part of the dress has a high slit cut into the side that travels up the side of the leg opposite to the draped side. Attached to that inner sheath lies a draped panel of jersey that is suspended from the shoulder. It falls  from that shoulder down and over the front and the back of the dress. This dress hooks into place at the shoulder and the jersey cascades loosely down and over the inner layer for the ultimate Grecian goddess feel. This is a classic dress by Halston that is perfect for traveling as it is wash and wear and will travel exceedingly well with little to no wrinkling. It is very easy to style too - a quick change of shoe takes it day to night in a snap. Excellent condition.

Slips on to wear and has a hook at the top of the shoulder. These will fit a variety of sizes since they are not cut to be super fitted and the jersey does have some stretch. Tagged a vintage Med.

Waist: to 20" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have a Question

1970s Stavropoulos Couture Layered Bias Cut Silk Chiiffon Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Stavropoulos Couture Layered Bias Cut Silk Chiiffon Dress

George Stavropoulos was an amazing designer and his work is extremely overlooked in my opinion. He was known for his evening wear and his signature looks often involved draping and the use of multiple layers of silk cut on the bias. He did not like overt, flashy ornamentation and instead focused on cut and fabric to convey the beauty of each piece. It was said that his gowns "seemed to float on air". He launched his label in 1960 and soon was dressing women like Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Kennedy, Barbra Streisand and Maria Callas. The majority of his gowns are almost entirely made by hand and to couture standards. By the early 1980s a gown by him started at around $8500 and they went up in cost from there - that starting price point equals to around $26,000 in today's dollars. So when you buy a vintage Stavropoulos gown you are getting incredible value for your money. The only reason many of his gowns are not considered Haute Couture is because he was not an official member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.

This is a wonderful example of his work. The outermost layer of silk is a beautiful pale lavender that sits over additional inner layers of the pale blue and cream. The body of the gown is made up of five full layers of the finest, lightest silk chiffon. Each layer is bias cut and floats over the one underneath it. The three most inner layers are an off-white colored silk. Then there is a pale baby blue layer, and the final exterior layer is that pale, pastel purple color. This gives the gown a remarkable and unique color because the colors underneath each show through the chiffon. It is entirely cut on the bias. This is also a feat of technical achievement to have all those bias cut layers sit over each other so perfectly. The sleeves are very full and each poufs out above the wrist and are finished with beaded applique work at the cuff. Both the front and back plunge into a V. Another spray of hand done appliqued bead work curves over one side of the bust and down to the waist towards the other side. It is a work of art, very romantic and ethereal in feel and even better in person then how it photoed.  Presents as excellent condition but has some small flaws - please review the condition notes below.

The inner layers of silk act as the lining and there are a total of 5 layers of silk as described above. It closes with a back hand set, painted metal zipper. There are some  tiny pulls, very faint water spots, smudges and small variation on color scattered across the front and areas across the back, a faint spot on one arm and at the front. Once on the amount of fabric effectively camouflages these but they are present and it is important to note. I have photoed the areas and reduced the price accordingly. If you don't mind that your vintage is not 'perfect' this is a remarkable dress for this price point. I have had it lightly cleaned when it came into the studio as I do everything, and some may come out more with additional round of cleaning. The bias cut will allow for a variety of sizes.

Sleeves: approx 25" and will come up slightly once the cuff is closed
Shoulders: slightly inset and 13" across
Bust: 16-18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 12-15" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: open
Length: approx 60" from shoulder to hem and will come up slightly once on due to the bias cut

I Have a Question

c.1965 Gene Shelly Pink Sequin Stretch Knit Dress w 3D Floral Design

I Have A Question: c.1965 Gene Shelly Pink Sequin Stretch Knit Dress w 3D Floral Design

In its heyday the Gene Shelly of California label was a must have. Gene Shelly dresses are amazing and they are some of the best of the early sequinned vintage pieces that you can find. All of the sequin work that covers this dress was done by hand in Hong Kong on American manufactured knit. The company would send the fabric to be hand beaded and then the dresses were made form the resulting fabric back in the US. At the time, Hong Kong was doing the best sequin and bead work in the world outside of the specialty ateliers in Paris and this kept the cost down as well - a gown like this would have probably cost about $600 dollars in the mid-1960s - which is the equivalent of about $4700 current USD.

The base of the dress is the labels signature stretch knit done for this dress in a pink. Onto this are thousands and thousands of tightly spaced, iridescent sequins. Each sequin has been meticulously applied by hand into place. Every inch of the fabric is literally covered with sequins. Set in among the pink sequins are cream and gold flowers. The petals of each flower are made from a larger cream paillettes that is hand sewn into place and set on its side so that they have a more 3D feel. Gold glass seed beads outline each petal of those flowers and are used to create the stems of the flowers that connect them all across the dress. At the center of each flower is a large clear crystal marquis shaped stone in a prong setting. Additional pear shaped cream colored beads with an iridescent finish are used to make the leaves. The dimension and texture created from the result of all of this hand work is wonderful. The dress itself is immensely flattering with its one shoulder silhouette and one long sleeve and figure hugging shape. The knit base makes it very comfortable to wear as it conforms to your curves. The knit is set on the bias so it shapes and molds to your figure once on.  Excellent condition.

The base is a pink stretch knit and the dress closes with a painted metal zipper at the back. The sequins are all applied by hand and I see no bare spots. The measurements are taken flat and shows the comfortable range of each spot. Note that it is a touch deeper hue of pink in person. It appears to have been worn very little if at all. The stretch will allow for a variety of sizes

1960s Jean Patou Printed Challis Set w Unusual Skirt Detailing

I Have A Question: 1960s Jean Patou Printed Challis Set w Unusual Skirt Detailing

This sixties skirt and top set from the Jean Patou label is made from a and light wool challis that has been printed with a wonderful design that for some reason reminds me of birds in flight even if that is not perhaps what the print looks like in a literal sense. The color combination is unique with a deep dusty coral pink set on a deep burgundy back drop and with that unexpected pop of blue in the skirt. It is two separate pieces so you can choose to wear them together or as separates. The top is cut boxy through the torso and buttons down the front. Each sleeve slightly poufs out above the fitted cuffs. At the neck there are two wide attached ties extending out from the collar that you can tie in a bow as I have or leave in a looser, easy knot. The skirt is very unusual and really takes the entire outfit into high fashion territory.  It is cut slim through the hips and then widens out into a soft A-line as it nears the hem. One side has an almost shocking swag detail that is created by the clever insertion of an extra panel of fabric. This fold soft down the side creating volume and detail but not bulk. Within this swag of fabric are bold pops of a bright baby blue worked through the print The contrast when you move is startling and bold. It is very beautiful and unusual. Excellent condition

The top is unlined and buttons to close at the front and cuffs. The skirt is lined in a deep burgundy silky rayon and has a back painted metal zipper and flat hook and eye at the waist. Note that there is a patch of repair on the inner waistband that does not show when worn and looks to have been done many years ago..

1990 Chanel Ad Campaign Boucle Suit as Seen on Yasmeen Ghauri

I Have A Question: 1990 Chanel Ad Campaign Boucle Suit as Seen on Yasmeen Ghauri

I love finding well documented pieces and this Chanel suir fits the bill as it was showcased on Yasmeen Ghauri in the 1990 Chanel ad campaign. In the campaign they took some creative license and paired the jacket with a plain black skirt for the shot. This version, with the matching skirt to the jacket, is what was actually shipped to the stores and was sold to clients. Both pieces of the suit are made from the Chanel signature boucle fabric that is created  with their proprietary method of weaving that they describe as "by weaving the warp and weft, using a variety of different kinds of threads which creates a unique and somewhat irregular appearance. The warp – vertically strung – is the background of the fabric, the base that will support the assembly of materials. There can be up to 12 different threads used for a single warp. The weft – woven horizontally – gives the fabric its unique character and can have an unlimited number of threads. Tight, perforated, textured, thick, with a relief, plaited, random, twill… the potential number of effects is endless". The color of the suit is a wonderful deep burgundy with small pops of other colors running through it. The slim cut skirt is topped by a looser fitting jacket with that perfect nineties proportions. I love the hand beaded edging that is done in a combination of yellow, blue, red and pink to pick up the subtler colors in the boucle. This beading runs down the front edges, around the collar and highlights each cuff and all three pockets on the jacket. It has only a single hook at the neck to close and the front falls open under that hook. Each sleeve is further adorned with four gold toned signature camellia buttons set beside the extensive beading that runs down the cuffs. It is gorgeous. Excellent condition.

Both pieces are fully lined in a deep red silk. The lining in the jacket is vertically quilted in rows. The skirt closes with a zipper and flat hook & eye at the waist. The jacket has a single hook at the top of the neck. Hand finishes throughout, handset bead work and  working buttonholes on each sleeve. Appears worn very little if at all.

1970s Givenchy Vivid Pink Silk Striped Skirt & Top Dress Set

I Have A Question: 1970s Givenchy Vivid Pink Silk Striped Skirt & Top Dress Set

This is one of my favorite Givenchy pieces that I have had in the shop to date. Striped pieces are always a great choice in my opinion and the colors on this set are wonderful. It is  a set that is made up of two pieces. This makes it very versatile allowing you to get the feel of a dress when they are worn together or mix and match with other pieces you have already. The vivid colors and bold stripes make for a tremendous impact and I love that strong pop of pink. The top is made of a semi-sheer silk cotton voile and the fabric choice gives it a pretty lightness and just a touch of sheerness. It buttons up the front and has a tie running through the waist so that you can cinch it in for added shape. The sleeves are long and slim and the collar pointed. This tops a long A-line skirt whose striping is set to run the same way, but the fabric used in its construction is different from the top. The skirt is made from a matte silk twill and this combination of fabrics give the set the perfect contrast in finishes. The waist of the skirt if fitted and then it is cut so that it widens out in volume as it nears the hem. Really a showstopper and an extraordinary set. Excellent condition

Both pieces are unlined with very well finished interiors. The top buttons at the front and cuffs and ties through the waist. The skirt closes with flat hook & eye at the waist and a zipper below that. The top is tagged a 36 and the skirt a 38. Hand finished and made to demi-couture standards

I Have a Question

Unusual 1970s Paganne Smocked Jersey Printed Maxi Dress

I Have A Question: Unusual 1970s Paganne Smocked Jersey Printed Maxi Dress

This Paganne jersey dress is a little unusual from the ones you normally see in that it is  smocked in an unusual design across the top. The entire top portion of the dress is gathered in horizontal rows of elastic. This allows the dress to stretch and conform to fit pretty much any figure or size as long as the shoulders and hips work on you. The sleeves have a nod to  Victorian days past in their shape. This is created with that same smocking technique on the upper shoulders so that they look more fitted even though the combination of elastic and jersey feels very easy to wear. Below the smocking they pouf out slightly and then cinch back in at each buttoned cuff. The skirt is long and lean and is just the jersey with no elastic running through it. This really allows that pretty print that covers the fabric to be shown off to its best advantage. The pinks and blues pop nicely off the black base too. The fabric is a washable jersey so is very easy to travel with and will hold up extremely well. Very unusual and easy to wear - just slip it on, add fabulous shoes and go. Excellent condition.

Unlined and closes at the back with a metal and nylon zipper. Each cuff buttons to close. No label present but the fabric is signed. The ruched fabric will allow for a range of sizes

1970s Mollie Parnis Pink Silk Taffeta Dress w Ruffle Detailing

I Have A Question: 1970s Mollie Parnis Pink Silk Taffeta Dress w Ruffle Detailing

This silk taffeta gown by the Mollie Parnis label has be made form a soft pink silk taffeta. The use of such a bright and unexpected color instantly make it a statement piece. The cut is simple but the ruffled details give it pop. At the neck a ruffled edging wraps around and down the collar and across the bodice curving in slightly at the waist. It begins again just under the waist line to trail down the skirt and then all the way around the hem, seeming to  envelop the wearer like a beautiful package. This gives the dress a pretty and feminine feel and at the same time it acts as a clever way to make the wearer appear tall and lean as it draws the eye down. I love the plunge front and the feel of a wrap dress despite that fact that this is all a created illusion as the dress actually does up at the back. The sleeves are also finished with that same pretty ruffle. A piped fabric tie belt in a matching silk cinches in the waist. The skirt is quite full and the fabric has just enough weight to it to hold the shape and volume. Excellent condition

Fully lined in a matching pink silk. It closes with a back painted metal zipper. Hidden side pockets along the hips and retains its original tie belt. . Note that in person the pink does not have any 'neon' feel to it as it photoed - that is a side effect of the light on the pink silk. It is a slightly deeper hue of pink in person.

1980s Pauline Trigere Balloon Sleeve Pink Silk Taffeta Dress

I Have A Question: 1980s Pauline Trigere Balloon Sleeve Pink Silk Taffeta Dress

Pauline Trigere was known for her sophisticated pieces and her fine workmanship. Her garments are often on par with demi-couture in how they are constructed and finished. Trigère did not sketch her designs; she cut and draped from bolts of fabric. Her designs were often inventive despite their apparent simplicity. In 1985, LA Times writer Bettijane Levine described the glamour of Trigère's clothing: "They seem to lend stature or stage presence even to those who don't look commanding in some other designer's outfits. By virtue of their couture-type structure and tailoring, they make even average-height women look statuesque." Throughout her career, Trigere oversaw all of the elements of her business even as it grew to be quite substantial. This hands on philosophy shows in the quality of her pieces. This pink gown is absolutely wonderful and one of my favorite pieces to date by her that I have had in the shop.

The lines of this dress are quite beautiful and it has high impact married with the simplicity that she so loved. It marries color, cut and line perfectly. The silk she chose for this gown is of a very high quality and it has been dyed a bright and vivid pink that instantly catches the eye. There are no embellishments on the dress leaving only that amazing color and the cut to carry all the drama of it. The bodice is fitted with a curving V neckline. Seams set on a curve narrow into a nipped in waist that is set into the skirt in a V that mimics the neckline. The skirt flows to the floor in a voluminous cascade of silk from under that waist detailing and the skirts are quite full. This fullness is accomplished by the way the skirt is set into the waist and it needs no additional underskirts. The sleeves are spectacular and their exaggerated volume balance out the skirt perfectly. Each of the sleeves is cut to sit just above the elbow and is fitted into the shoulders in a way that allows for that wonderful pouffed balloon effect that you see. They are fabulous and serve as the focal point of the dress and despite their great volume somehow do not overwhelm the wearer once the dress is one. Excellent condition with one note to review below.

Fully lined in a matching colored pink silk and closes with a back painted metal zipper. Hand finished. There is the faintest of watermarks near the hem - you would only ever see this when it is laid out flat and you are searching. I attempted to photo it but the camera does not really pick it up.

Shoulders: 15.5"
Bust: 18" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have a Question

1970s John Kloss Pale Peach Nylon Open Tie Back Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s John Kloss Pale Peach Nylon Open Tie Back Dress

The John Kloss for Circa line was originally intended to be worn as lingerie pieces and many that you find now were simply too thin or too sheer to wear as proper dress. The recent trend towards wearing items more sheer and layered over inner foundation garments makes them suitable as outwear now. This one walks the edge, as far as how sheer it is. It def has a touch of sheerness in a strong light but you could use it as a cover up, be daring and wear nothing but a slip under it, or layer it over just about anything underneath to the point where you can walk outside. I love his work and this piece is a great example of how he worked with a woman's body to show it off to its best advantage. He deliberately chose good weight and quality nylons that held the color well and would drape exactly as he wished. This simple cut piece is done in a pale peach that is a touch softer in hue then how it photoed color-wise. It is better in person in my opinion. It slips over the head with pretty flutter sleeves that give a nod to the thirties in feel. The bust is slightly highlighted by a seam that runs just under it and then the front is left to fall in a simple line to the hem. At the back you have a open cut out with two ties that cross and tie to hold it in place. This leave the back almost completely bare. Quite amazing and daring. Excellent condition

Unlined and slips on. Tagged P (small). The fabric does have some stretch

Shoulders: no defined seam
Bust: approx 16" flat across from side seam to side seam with some allowance for the tie back, the under seam of the bust is 14", again with some allowance for the tie back

1950s Helena Barbieri Champagne Silk Satin Beaded Dress

I Have A Question: 1950s Helena Barbieri Champagne Silk Satin Beaded Dress

I am always so pleased to have a Helena Barbieri piece come into the shop as they are a rare label to find and each is very special. Her specialty was formal wear and her signatures included embellishment mixed with decadent details. You would be hard pressed to find modern counterparts as finely done and constructed as far as the workmanship and detailing in one of her gowns. This one is absolutely beautiful and could easily be used as a wedding gown for the bride looking for an alternative to a modern gown. The fabric is a rich, luxurious silk satin, in a champagne color that has just the slightest undertone of pink to it. Onto this is a hand applied design that runs over the strapless bodice, under the band at the waist and runs down and across the skirt. The design is made of floral lace cut outs that have hand applied sequins added with little clusters of prong set rhinestone crystals to form each flower's center. The skirt is cut on a slight A-line with a little more fabric at the back between two long inverted pleats so you get a suggestion of a train. An extravagant bow sits at the base of the low back and drapes softly down to just above the knee. The construction of this dress is impeccable. It is drop dead gorgeous. Excellent overall condition with a small note to review below.

Unlined with pinked seams and boning through the bodice. The applique work and finishes are all hand done. Closes with a back painted metal zipper. The bow hooks into place. The interior of the bow has built in tulle to give it a touch of fullness. There is a tiny bit of foxing/storage marks on the bow that get lost in the folds once it is on. Some slight scuffing/small marks to the silk satin here and there that is a natural occurrence with this type of fabric over time. All minor.

Bust: 16.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 13" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 19" flat across from side seam to side seam
Bodice: 6" from top of bodice to seam under waist band
Length: 45" from seam under waist band to hem

1970s Bob Mackie Beaded Strapless Ivory Silk Chiffon Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Bob Mackie Beaded Strapless Ivory Silk Chiffon Dress

This gorgeous dress is by Bob Mackie who is perhaps as well known for dressing Cher as he is for his love of over the top opulence in his work. He worked for costume designers Edith Head and Jean Louis before starting his own label. This early influence and love for the glamor of Hollywood is seen all through his career. His work is always extravagant and glamorous in the best possible way. Here we have a lovely off-white dress made from silk chiffon detailed with dangling bead work on the bodice. The bust is strapless and fitted to the body with inner construction to hold it in place. On the exterior are hand applied rhinestones, silver and clear glass beads and dangling strands set on pretty curving lines. It would not be a Bob Mackie without some glitz and the bodice brings that in spades. Under that beaded bust line, the silk chiffon skirt flows the floor giving a light and airy effect as it swirls around you as you move. Excellent condition

Fully lined in a white silk that is completely hand set, with a boned, slightly padded bust and waist stay interior. It closes with a back painted zipper. Hand finished throughout. Two layers of silk chiffon over the inner lining of the skirt. It is numbered by hand on one side of the interior. I see a couple of very minor marks and a small repair on the top layer of silk near one side at the back but you only spot these when it is laid out flat due to the yards and yards of fabric in the skirt.

1970s Lanvin Deep Red & White Jersey Floral & Stripe Print Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Lanvin Deep Red & White Jersey Floral & Stripe Print Dress

This vintage Lanvin dress is an unusual color combination of a deep red mixed with white and unexpected pops of purple. The jersey fabric it is made of was considered one of the new "miracle fabrics" of the day as they gave women the option to wash and wear and travel with pieces that needed little or no ironing once you arrived at your destination.  Lanvin began producing pieces from these jerseys in the early 1970s to appeal to their younger, jet set clients and I love when I find great examples of these and this time period in the label's history. The dress has a higher cut, scooped neckline and long straight cut sleeves. The waist is cut loose and easy and the definition is more a visual one from the stripes that circle the waist. You can add a belt if you want it further defined but I prefer it left without so the line is long and lean. The skirt falls to the floor and slightly widens as it nears the hem so you get a little volume. That same stripes design detail used at the waist anchors the hem. I love how those stripes contrast against the floral print and are used to define the shape and cut of the dress. The fabric is easy to care for and this is a great piece to travel with. Excellent condition

Unlined and closes with a back painted metal zipper.

1970s Jean Muir Hand Painted Blue Jersey Smock Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Jean Muir Hand Painted Blue Jersey Smock Dress

Jean Muir is renowned for her cut and her use of fluid flowing jerseys and this piece is an outstanding example of just that. It is so chic in person and although it really needs a real body under it to show it off to its  full advantage you can see the potential. The full cut does not do justice on the mannequin and I think the person that snatches it up will be more then happy when they see this one in person. The base fabric is made from her signature jersey and it had a wonderful drape and movement to it. The fabric has been hand screened and painted with colorful dashes of color from top to bottom. It is cut very loose through the body. It has an almost flapper feel that is mixed with a baby doll cut. This cut will make it very forgiving, and flattering, on lots of body types. There are hidden pockets tucked along the side seams and an attached tie at the neck. An interesting fact about her pieces - each of her dresses were made one at a time and by one single person start to finish. This singular attention shows in the quality of her garments. Excellent condition

Unlined and closes with buttons down the front. Each sleeve buttons to close at the cuff. Tagged a size US 6 and meant to be worn very loose and easy and over-sized. The full cut will allow for a variety of sizes.

1970s Yves Saint Laurent Hooded Deep Green Shaved Fur Poncho

I Have A Question: 1970s Yves Saint Laurent Hooded Deep Green Shaved Fur Poncho

This hooded poncho or cape is wonderful. It's by Yves Saint Laurent and is a beautiful and easy to wear piece that will fit virtually any size. It's a wonderful piece of the work he was doing using furs during this time period. The pelts are pieced together in a patchwork of squares and giving it an added dimension of texture. The cut is very simple - the back is one large panel and then there are two panels that fall across the shoulder and down the front. It has one single hook at the neck and simply falls into place. I love the attached hood that really makes it feel dramatic. The fur has been dyed to a deep forest green that appears almost black in some lights but in a bright light the green really comes through strong and true. I am not an expert in fur but believe it is sheared beaver - this technique almost makes it appear to be a faux fur but I did open a small teeny bit if the seam and did verify it to be a dyed fur. It looks to have been worn very little if at all and is the type of item that you can throw over almost anything. Excellent condition

Lined in a black silk satin lining embossed with the YSL logo. Closes with a single hook and eye at the neck and there is a hidden pocket along the edge of the front on each side

Width: 56" side to side
Length: 42.5" neck to hem

Modern Sizing Equivalent: OSFA

I have a small collection of historically important, key designer labelled vintage furs and fur trimmed pieces stored away in my archives that I will be slowly posting on the site over the next couple of years until I have none left. I will no longer be buying furs for the shop moving forward and have not purchased anything for several years now. I feel like times have changed and while there still is a place for vintage furs for some, including collectors and historians, many modern girls are choosing other options. Many of the pieces in my collection are representative of the designer during a set time period in history that was different then our modern outlook. I have decided that the best course to handle this controversial issue is to let the pieces I have go rather then sit in a cold storage unit.

1960s Bessi Silk Jersey & Silk Chiffon Pink & Red Print Dress

I Have A Question: 1960s Bessi Silk Jersey & Silk Chiffon Pink & Red Print Dress

I love the color of this wonderful Bessi dress and the mix of the silks used. The contrast that is created by using a silk jersey with a silk chiffon is beautiful and that combined with the vivid pink and red mix make for a gorgeous dress. Bessi print are reminiscent of Emilio Pucci but they tend to be more uni-tonal with a play on subtle variations of color. The influence of Pucci can not be denied however. The floral and leaf print on this dress is bright and vivid, combining pops of a cherry red mixed with pink and raspberry. I love the use of the contrasting border at the neck, waist, cuffs and hem that define and anchor the cut of the dress. The dress itself is made from a mix of three silks. The bodice is a silk jersey that is easy to wear and feels fabulous and comfortable once on. The top layer of the skirt is an airy silk chiffon in a matching print to the top that is layered over a solid red silk lining. This inner lining is finished at the hem with a silk chiffon printed border. It is this mix of silks that give the dress that rich feel. Excellent condition

The bodice is unlined and the skirt lined in a red silk inner skirt. It closes with a back painted metal and nylon zipper. The bodice has some stretch.

I Have a Question

1970s Yves Saint Laurent Red Gauze Multi Length Caftan Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Yves Saint Laurent Red Gauze Multi Length Caftan Dress

This red Yves Saint Laurent dress is especially fun because it can be worn so many different ways. Its like having a half dozen dresses in one. It is made from a red crepe silk gauze that has a touch of transparency to it. There are yards of fabric used in its construction and it is very light in weight. The versatility come sin part from that loose and easy cut and also because of how the waist, neck and cuffs are finished. The waist has a drawstring that runs through and ties. The drawstring itself is a pink braided silk cord that ends in tassels. I love that little pop of contrasting color this gives the piece. You can leave this loose and ling so the dress becomes a long maxi dress, or tie it as high as you wish around the hips or waist to make it shorter on you. The neck has that same multi function as it is finished with a wide gathered elastic under the fabric that allows you to wear it off shoulder or higher. The sleeves are also finished in that same elastic detailing that allows you to wear the long or pushed up. High slits sit along each side of the skirt and this is a piece that can easily go from beach to market to evening depending on how you style and wear it. Excellent condition

Unlined and slightly transparent. Slips on to wear with drawstring at the waist that allows the length to be adjusted. Elastic at the neck and cuffs. Tagged a YSL 42. Appears to be unworn or worn very little. The loose and easy cut will allow it to fit almost any size.

Sleeves: 22" approx.
Shoulders: adjustable
Bust: to 18" flat across from side seam to side seam and will expand well beyond that
Waist: open and adjustable with the drawstring tie

I Have a Question

1970s Mollie Parnis Huge Floral Print Silk Organza Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Mollie Parnis Huge Floral Print Silk Organza Dress

Mollie Parnis is one of my favorite American designers who dressed numerous first ladies and was very well known for her structured designs. She started a label with her husband in 1933 and by the 1940s was designing solely under her own label. The boutique label launched in 1970 and the fabrics used for this label were targeted to a younger audience and the fabric tend to be brighter and bolder like in this dress. The dress is as bright and pretty as it appears in the photos and is one of those pieces that you can't help but to be drawn to to with that gorgeous and huge floral print. The exterior layer of the dress is made from a silk organza that has the print screened over the surface from top to bottom. The blooms in the print are large and done in a brilliant red & white with pops of green & purple worked in and around the design. A green silk satin is used for the trim on the sleeves and hem. The interior layer of fabric is a solid red silk voile that anchors the color and adds depth and texture to the design. The bodice has a V cut and a slight empire waist from which the skirt fall to the ground. Those huge bell sleeves are the perfect dramatic finish. Excellent condition with a tiny note to review below.

Fully lined in a red silk voile and closes with a back painted metal zipper. It comes with a green bow belt as seen in the photos of Cherie wearing the dress. There is one tiny spot on one sleeve with a slight thinning of the fabric and one near the inner seam at the shoulder, both seem strong and stable and does not detract - mentioned for accuracy only. Note that a smaller girl can wear it and it will be looser through the waist and more caftan like.

1970s Donald Brooks Black Strapless Jersey Swing Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Donald Brooks Black Strapless Jersey Swing Dress

I love Donald Brooks pieces and this little black strapless number is a great example of how he could do sleek and simple superbly. It is made of a slinky, fluid jersey and its simple exterior hides a very well constructed interior. The strapless bodice hugs your torso and is held in place by an inner corset that hooks to close under the top layer. This gives you a sleek line and shape. Under this the skirt falls to just about the ankle, or just above depending on your height, and there is an astonishing amount of fabric in that skirt. The fabric is light weight enough that it falls perfectly when you are standing still and does not seem bulky, but the second you move (or twirl across a dance floor) the amount of fabric becomes apparent. It is finished with two long panels of fabric that are attached at the back and then curve around the front and loop through the loop at the front center east. These then hang down the front in long ties. I am sure you could get creative and style them a few interesting ways too. Excellent condition

The skirt is unlined and the bodice has a full inner corset that hooks to close. The corset lining is a black silky rayon. The dress closes with a hidden set zipper over that.

Bust: 16" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: hooks at either 13" or 13.5" f;at across from side seam to side seam

1970s Joy Stevens Black Strapless Jersey Dress w Keyhole

I Have A Question: 1970s Joy Stevens Black Strapless Jersey Dress w Keyhole

I have had this same dress in a deep burgundy in the shop before and this black version is just as wonderful and perhaps a teeny bit more versatile. The designer is Joy Stevens who is one of my favorites that were working out of California during this time period. Her designs ruled the night clubs of the seventies and have a sexy but easy to wear feel to them. They were the type of thing you just threw on, looked fabulous and could dance until 3 in without worrying about how they would hold up. Her best pieces were made from a fluid jersey (like this piece) and this allowed them to both move and wear well. This dress has a plunging key hole that ties just above the plunge. The neckline is strapless so it leaves the shoulders and upper back bare and sexy. The skirt flows to the ground in a gradual A-line for a long and lean line. Throw it on for day with flats or wear sky high heels at night - it works well for either. Excellent condition.

Unlined and slips on to wear. The waist is elastic and you adjust the top of the bust with the tie front. Appear unworn

Bust: to 16.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 11.5-15" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have A Question: 1970s Lanvin Bright Red & Yellow Stripe Printed Shirt Dress

If you need a bold, statement making, sort of crazy dress - you just found it. This is one of those fabulous 1970s shirt dress pieces that Lanvin wexcelled at in the early part of the decade. This one is especially bright and happy feeling. It is made of a polyester jersey crepe that takes and holds that vibrant color fabulously. It also travels and wears perfectly as it is virtually wrinkle free. The cut is classic and simple - it slips over the head with buttons to part way down the front for detailing that is it - you are ready to go. The sleeves have white cuffs that pick up the button front and pointed collar. It has its original tie belt in a matching fabric so you can cinch on the waist for shape. Love the insane color clash and angled print. Excellent condition

Fun 1970s James Galanos Red & White Dotted Jumpsuit

I Have A Question: Fun 1970s James Galanos Red & White Dotted Jumpsuit

This fun little jumpsuit by the American couturier James Galanos really showcases his more playful side. I love the bright red and white dot print that completely covers the jumpsuit from shoulder to hem. The silk fabric that he chose to use is light and easy to wear creating the perfect balance to the bold print. It moves beautifully once on and has a nice tailored feel that keeps the print from being to much. The top is cut with a simple scoop neckline at the front and a deeper, low scoop at the back. The waist is just a suggestion created by vertical seaming and you could add a belt to create even more shape. The pants are amazing. Each is cut wide and straight so that you get a really long lean line and each ends in a little turned up cuff. It is fabulous. Galanos was known as the designer that could rival the French in terms of construction and design. He launched his atelier in 1951 and though he was never a designer whose label was formally made a true Haute Couture atelier, he certainly produced clothing with many of the hallmarks that define couture, thus giving him the status as being known as one of the "American Couturiers". I consider most of his pieces demi-couture for that very reason. Excellent overall condition with one note to review below

Fully lined  in a white silk with hand finished edges. It closes at the back with a hidden set zipper. There is the lightest of discoloration along the edge of the inner arms that shows more so on the inside. It is perfectly fine once on. Please review the photos provided.

1950s Gaby Couture Embellished Silk Strapless Gown & Cover

I Have A Question: 1950s Gaby Couture Embellished Silk Strapless Gown & Cover

The designer behind this label was British couturier Gaby Young-MacKinnon. Gaby started off as one of Christian Dior's muse and house models and later started her own atelier in Mallorca Spain. The gown is tremendously beautiful and has all the hallmarks of Haute Couture. It is entirely made by hand and the fabric is a rich, heavy weight, pale pink silk satin. It is strapless with curved seams over the bodice and is highly embellished by hand. It is cut to fit around the bodice to just the top of the hips. It is a little large for my mannequin and I do not like to over pin garments so on the right size girl this will fit like a glove and the sweep of the skirt from the fitted bodice will be more pronounced. Inside is a boned bodice that closes with a series of inner hooks to hold the dress in place. The work on the bodice is beautiful with a dense application of hand set beads and rhinestones and you can easily see the influence of Dior in this one. The spray of rhinestone and glass tube bead clusters continues down and over the entirety of the skirt. It comes with its original pink silk satin trained "jacket" that sits over the shoulder and trails down each side. Good condition with some items to note below

There is a boned inner foundation garment and a series of hooked stays that run down and behind the zipper. Stiffening fabric through the hips. The dress and shawl are both sound and sturdy but there is "grubbiness" to the fabric of both wit the most showing along the hem of both. I have photoed the worst areas. Surface scuffs to the fabric here and there but nothing that stands out as a large flaw. It looks like the side seams of the bodice were let out at some point. There are some beads missing but enough overall that some could be moved form other areas to fill. Inside I see some shattering to the silk near the top edge of the bodice and at the top of the boning pockets. Completely made by hand as Haute Couture demands and remarkable construction. This is a stunning gown that is still wearable with care and a little TLC.

Bust: 16" flat across from side seam to side seam, with generous room for probably  up to a C cup
Inner waist stay: 14" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: open
Bodice: 10 " from top of bodice to true inner waist
Skirt: 44" from inner waist to hem

1970s Frank Usher Black Jersey Maxi Dress w Deep Front Plunge & No Back

I Have A Question: 1970s Frank Usher Black Jersey Maxi Dress w Deep Front Plunge & No Back

This Frank Usher is amazing. It is not perfect but it has lots of life left in it and I know there are girls out there that will overlook its small flaws to get the amazing look that this one has. It is made out of many yards of a light nylon black jersey. This fabric choice allows the dress to drape beautifully once on and moves wonderfully. The skirt is cut on the bias so once you put it on it simply falls into place. It is cut to the floor and when you move you get the sense of the amount of yardage that is in the skirt. The way that the bodice is constructed gives the dress a slight Grecian feel. The top is made from two triangle halters that extend up and out of the waist and curve over the shoulders. A second smaller panel extends from the top of each triangle and this creates that double strap effect that you see before it runs down the back in a single strap to meet the waist there. The front is left in an extreme plunge that goes right to the waist. There are two rows of gatherings around the waist. One that has a tie extending out of it to hold the plunge in place and a second one below that circles the waist. The back is left completely bare. Overall great condition with two small notes below

The bodice is a double layer of the jersey and there is an inner skirt under the exterior layer. It closes with a low back set zipper. A tie runs through the front that can be adjusted for the perfect fit. I see a repair to the jersey near the base of the zipper and there  are two small repairs to the fabric under the front side waist line. Please see the two photos after the label shot. Once on the dress has tons of fabric so you don't see either flaw.

Bust: adjustable due to cut
Waist: 13" flat across from side seam to side seam
Inner skirt hips: 18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Bodice: 15" from neck to waist
Skirt: 40" from waist to hem

Modern Sizing Equivalent: XS-SML

1980s Jacqueline Ribes Demi-Couture Silk Dress W Removable Collar

I Have A Question: 1980s Jacqueline Ribes Demi-Couture Silk Dress W Removable Collar

The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted a Jacqueline de Ribes exhibit in 2015-16, giving her work an extra dose of much needed attention. De Ribes was know as "on of the most celebrated fashion personas of the 20th century". She began making dresses for herself and eventually opened her own label in 1982 at the age of 53, producing collections for the next 12 years.

This is a gorgeous black silk dress with a removable collar that looks like it was made at a couture level. Her signature preference for black and white is combined with a beautiful high grade silk and a dramatic flare. The dress is made of a fine silk and the construction is marvelous. It is cut to sit in a simple sheath with just a nod tot he waist as it curves in slightly there. The sleeves are kept long and slim and the neckline on the dress itself is cut in a sharp angular cut. When the dress is worn on its own it has a very austere feel to it. This is not all to the dress though, it has that dramatic cream silk collar that you may add and this collar takes it from simple to striking. The collar is pleated and flared and cleverly snaps into place with a series of hidden snaps all around the inner neck. Excellent condition with one small item to note in the description below.

Fully lined in a black silk and closes with a hand set back zipper that is built along the front side seam. The removable collar snaps and hooks into place. Each cuff closes with a hand set zipper. I see one teeny smudge of a spot inside a fold on the collar but once on you would be hard pressed to find it.

Sleeves: 23.5" approx.
Shoulders: no defined seam
Bust: 17.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 15.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 18.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Length: 39.5" from neck to hem

I Have A Question: c.1984 John Anthony Black Metallic Lame Jersey Dress w Very Deep Front Plunge & No Back

John Anthony opened his label in 1971 and during the 1970s he produced some really outstanding pieces that were sexy but still felt sophisticated. His business was made to order so his pieces are all a one off or one of very few. His pieces are high quality and very well made.

This dress is very sexy and shows off a lot of skin but in the best possible way. The metallic lame jersey that he has chosen as the fabric is very lightweight. Once it is on it feels almost weightless. It is cut on the bias so once you slip it on the seaming and bias cut drape the dress over you and it feels like you are wearing nothing. The bodice is made up of two triangles that are set so that they gather in towards the middle of the waist where there is a large knot of lame. It is suspended by small straps that are made from the same fabric. These curve up and over each shoulder and then cross over themselves at the back The rest of the back is left completely bare and open. The front plunges insanely low to right above that front knot detail. Under that the skirt is cut so that the hem curves around with the front cut into a high slit. The second you move or sit you get a glimpse of leg almost to the upper thigh as a result. The ultimate Study 54 dress. It appears to have been worn very little if at all. Excellent condition

Fully interlined in a black chiffon and closes with a back hidden set zipper. Cut on the bias with light boning on the sides of the bust. Hand finished throughout

Bust: 18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 14" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 20" flat across from side seam to side seam
Length: 59" from neck to hem

I Have a Question

1960s James Galanos 'Teddy Bear' Faux Fur Coat

I Have A Question: 1960s James Galanos 'Teddy Bear' Faux Fur Coat

The fabric is the first thing that catches your eye on this amazing Galanos coat. It is a faux "Teddy Bear" coat and looks and feels amazingly plush and soft. It has an almost military feel to it in the cut but with a softer, chicer edge. The collar, is rounded and small and I love the top set pockets with their button detailed flaps. The buttons are special in their own right, each is a carved wooden dome with an inset of mother of pearl. The cut of this coat is beautiful. It skims the body in a long lean line and is very flattering. It is sharply tailored and the military feel of the cut and detailing is fabulous. Galanos was known as the designer that could rival the French in terms of construction and design. He launched his atelier in 1951 and though he was never a designer that was formally made a couture house he certainly produced clothing with many of the hallmarks that define couture, thus giving him the status as being known as one of the "American Couturiers". He was particularly known for his meticulous cut, fit, and use of quality fabrics. He made clothes that lasted and this coat is absolute proof as it looks as fresh now as the day it was made. Immaculate in its construction, it is a stunning example of why Galanos is considered one of the great American couturiers. Presents as excellent condition with some notes to review in the condition notes below.

The coat is fully lined in a light brown silk and closes with front buttons. It has a good weight to it but is not unwieldy to wear. There is wear to the most edges and under where any buttons closes (super size photos to see). The fabric is strong and sturdy and this just adds to its vintage feel. This did affect the price and I feel like its a steal because it is extremely wearable and chic.

Sleeves: 21"
Shoulders: 14.5"
Bust: 18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 16" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have a Question

1970s Unlabelled Mac Tac Printed One Shoulder Navy Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Unlabelled Mac Tac Printed One Shoulder Navy Dress

The Mac Tac label was produced by a parent company called Leonard Sunshine and in terms of print and quality it is right up there with Leonard  or Pucci pieces in my book. And of all the designs they produced I think the single shoulder pieces are the best. This lovely example has lost its label during the dry cleaning process sadly, but I know it is Mac Tac as I saw the label myself. It is made from a beautifully printed, light jersey that drapes and moves fabulously. It is also very easy to travel with as it is virtually wrinkle free. This is the kind of piece you can throw into a suitcase and be able to wear right away and be able to hand wash it at any time. It works from day to night depending on how you style it and what shoes you wear. The base color is a deep navy blue and the floral print that is printed across the skirt pops wonderfully off that neutral backdrop. One side of the shoulder is left completely bare and the other has a wide swath of fabric that sweeps up and over it. The waist is defined with a seam and it also has its original slip buckle belt that you can use to cinch it in even more if you wish. Beneath the waist the skirt flares to the floor in a gentle sweep and that wonderful pop of color in the vibrant print. Excellent condition.

Unlined and slips on to wear. Elastic through the waist. Has its original slip buckle belt. The fabric has some stretch. The cut and fabric will allow for a range of sizes to wear this

Bust: 16-18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 12-14" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have A Question: S/S 2016 See by Chloe RTW Look 25 Off Shoulder Printed Maxi Dress

The color combination on this dress is absolutely wonderful. It is a beautiful mix of pastels that work perfectly together and are mixed with a pretty flower pattern that runs over it. The flowers are set in vertical rows that run the length of the dress on the pink based tiers and are simply scattered of the fabric on the the palest blue ones. This mix of colors and tiers give it a easy beachy, bohemian vibe. The loose and easy cut is very flattering and forgiving and the dress has a real feminine, romantic feel to it. The sleeves are capped and their elastic finish give then a full pouf. The neckline is also finished with an elastic running through its edge so you can adjust the neckline to sit fully off the shoulders, or to sit higher up, depending on your mood. This was Look 25 in the Spring 2016 collection presentation. It is very feminine but sexy at the same time. Excellent condition

Fully lined, except for the sleeves, in a light cotton. It slips on to wear. No size tag but it will easily fit a wide range of sizes.

I Have a Question

1970s Saks Youth Dimension Backless Jersey One Shoulder Blue Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Saks Youth Dimension Backless Jersey One Shoulder Blue Dress

This dress is from the in-house Saks Fifth Avenue Youth Dimensions label of the 1970s and is very well made and designed. It is made out of a deep blue jersey and there are yards of that jersey used in its construction. The top drapes up to a single shoulder and is suspended there by a thick braided strap that curves over the shoulder and across the back. The back is left completely bare otherwise and it is set into the back skirt so it almost "lifts" the waist up and away from the body a little bit. This creates a stunningly beautiful line and an added touch of sexiness. From there the skirt cascades to the floor in yards of bias cut jersey. It has a tremendous amount of volume and fullness, but this is only seen when you move. It can be worn as is or you can add a belt to cinch in the waist even further. This is really a wonderful interpretation of the classic Greek "goddess" dress and the jersey chosen for the fabric makes it easy to wear and care for. Excellent condition

Unlined and slips on to wear with elastic that runs through the waist. The cut and elastic waist will allow this to fit on a variety of sizes. I have put XS-MED but it might even fit a larger size if you are not too big on top and the waist fits.

Bust: variable due to the open back cut
Waist: 13-17" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: open
Bodice: 15" from top of bodice to waist
Skirt: 42.5" from waist to hem

I Have a Question

1970s Pauline Trigere Fused Velvet & Chocolate Silk Chiffon Dress w Attached Tie at Neck

I Have A Question: 1970s Pauline Trigere Fused Velvet & Chocolate Silk Chiffon Dress w Attached Tie at Neck

I always love finding a great example of Pauline Trigere's work and this dress is one. The first thing that strikes you when you pick this up is that it weighs far less then you would think. You tend to think velvet will be heavy but this is a fine silk velvet fused onto silk chiffon and this allows for that feeling of lightness and movement that the dress has. Once on it is heavenly to wear. I love how she has used the curving design of the velvet bits to define the dress and 'shape' the body. When you see this dress on the hanger you don't realize just how fabulous it is. It is only once on that you really see the masterful way she used the cut and drape of the fabric to create a kind of subtle sexiness. You are really only covered by a layer of nude chiffon that lays under the transparent silk chiffon behind the fused velvet. But at the same time the two layers are enough that you do feel covered. The sleeves are not lined so you get more of the sense of skin through the fabric. The neck is high and there is an attached tie there. I have shown it looped loose and easy at the back so that the ends hang down but you could wrap and tie it around the neck as well. You could add a belt or sash to give it more shape too. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a nude silk chiffon except for the sleeves and closes with a painted metal & nylon zipper. Each sleeve has an individual zipper at the cuff. Hand finished and beautiful construction. Light padding in each shoulder

Sleeves: 26"

I Have a Question

1970s Jean Muir Billowing Sleeve Perforated Olive Suede Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Jean Muir Billowing Sleeve Perforated Olive Suede Dress

This museum quality Jean Muir suede dress is both very rare and very beautiful. It is made from a butter soft, deep olive suede that is beautifully cut. It is a rare example of the work that Jean Muir did utilizing suede and leathers. The cut is amazing and the suede is treated like a fine fabric with no shortcuts taken. It is cut loose and easy through the body with a slip belt that you can use to cinch in the waist for a more fitted silhouette. I love the sleeves in particular. Each is cut extremely full and wide and then tapers to a wide cuff that you can wear folded or down for a more dramatic feel. The front is yoked with a sharp little collar and the skirt is set into the dropped waist with a series of pleats that give it that fabulous fullness. There are hidden pockets along each hip. The final effect is that of a chic little shirtwaister but with the unusual twist of the suede. I love the perforated cut out that highlight the design of the dress - these add a little visual interest and also a little unexpected flash of skin to peek through. The buckle and cuffs are finished with fabulous bakelite looking buckle and buttons. Very seventies and very wonderful.  Excellent condition with one item to note in the condition notes below.

Unlined and slip on to wear with no closures. Each cuff closes with a button and the belt has a slip buckle to cinch. It has been cleaned by a leather specialist. Tagged a UK vintage 10. Hidden pockets along the inner seams. There is one angled cut in the suede near the pocket. It is photoed and is stable so was left as found. The full cut will allow for a variety of sizes as you cinch it in once on.
