I Have a Question

Phenomenal Fall 1991 Jean Louis Scherrer Haute Couture Runway Silk Velvet Cut Devore Cocoon Coat

I Have A Question: Phenomenal Fall 1991 Jean Louis Scherrer Haute Couture Runway Silk Velvet Cut Devore Cocoon Coat

  • The twin of this phenomenal coat walked the runway for the Fall 1991 Jean Louis Scherrer Haute Couture collection.
  • It was made under the creative direction of Eric Mortensen.
  • The coat would have been completely made by hand in the Paris atelier.
  • This coat is a dream and I feel like the photos do not fully convey how beautiful it is in real life. It is made out of a cut silk devore and has the feel of a 1920s couture flapper coat.
  • The fabric is outstanding. The base silk is a pale olive green and then the silk velvet on top of that is the prettiest softest brown. The velvet catches the light and changes how its colour feels slightly depending on how the light hits it.
  • The pattern that covers it is a beautiful floral pattern that trails over the entire coat.
  • The collar is soft and is a nod to the extended shawl collars of the 1920s. There is some padding built into the shoulders for some structure.
  • The sleeves extend out from the waist so they are very wide around the body and then they narrow down to the opening that you slip your hand through.
  • To wear the coat you simply slip it on. It has no closures and once on it drapes into place around you falling in beautiful, curving draped lines around you.
  • The hem is cut so that it curves up and around at the front and falls longer at the back.
  • This is a piece that you really cannot get the full sense of until it is on and moving. It wraps around you in a cloud of silk velvet and silk. It is so very good.
  • The coat is fully lined in a very high end olive coloured silk and has no closures. All of the work is done completely by hand to couture standards. The proper Haute Couture numbered tag is present. It appears to have been worn very little if at all. The generous cut should fit just about any frame. It will just be more draped and cocoon feeling the smaller you are.
  • There is no size tag present because it is true Couture. Please go by the measurements listed below.
  • Excellent condition

Sleeves: approx 19" and are full and open around the upper arm
Shoulders: no true defined seam
Bust-hips: open
Total length: 60" from neck to back hem

Modern Sizing Equivalent: OSFA

Incredible 1980s Carolina Herrera Angora & Mohair Knit Cape w Panels of Metallic Gold Thread

I Have A Question: Incredible 1980s Carolina Herrera Angora & Mohair Knit Cape w Panels of Metallic Gold Thread

  • The label on this piece dates it to the mid-late 1980s, maybe early 1990s
  • It was made under the creative direction of Carolina Herrera.
  • She launched her label in 1981 and prior to that had been known as a style setter.
  • This is a fantastically rare and wonderful piece from those earlier days and it is one of the best capes that I think I have ever come across in all of my years of doing vintage.
  • The knits used in it feels like it is a combination of an angora and mohair. Mixed in with that are gold and a reddish gold metallic thread used for some of the long rows that run the length of the cape.
  • This mix of autumn feeling colours is just phenomenal and the metallic pieces that are woven in with the knit add a beautiful subtle shimmer to the entire cape.
  • The knits have been set in long vertical rows that run the entire length of the cape.
  • I love how the panels are sewn more tightly together to about the waist area and then they open up. This technique gives you extra volume for the bottom portion of the cape.
  • There are no arm openings on this one. It simply slips on to the shoulders and then ties at the neck with long matching knit ties.
  • Inside, the cape is finished in a deep burgundy so you get a gorgeous flash of a solid colour when you move.
  • There is padding through the shoulders to help add structure so that it sits properly on top of the shoulder.
  • The cape slips on and ties at the neck. It is fully lined in a burgundy silk. I see some light discolouration here and there along the lining. Please see the photo after the label shot. The exterior is pristine.
  • There is no size tag present and the easy cut should allow it to fit any size. On a smaller frame it will drape more.
  • Excellent condition

Total length: 60"

I Have A Question: Extraordinary Fall 1985 Jean Patou Haute Couture by Christian Lacroix Feather Trim Cocoon Coat

  • Note that due to new regulations this coat can only ship to a Canadian address
  • This appears to be the actual Haute Couture sample coat that walked the runway for the Fall 1985 Jean Patou collection for Look 12
  • Made under the creative direction of Christian Lacroix
  • This is an extremely rare and important piece of fashion history. Very few pieces of his work at Patou come up for sale and this is more then likely the only piece to exist.
  • Made in the Paris atelier
  • Made of a soft orange wool shaped in an enveloping cocoon shape highly reminiscent of a 1920s flapper coat.
  • It is all cut on the bias so once it is on the body it wraps around you beautifully. It is extraordinary.
  • The sleeves are quite extremely wide and they have a long wide cuff that flips up and over the sleeve. The cuff is completely covered in hand dyed feathers.
  • More of the same hand dyed feathers are used to create a huge shawl collar that drapes down and over the shoulders. It continues to run all the way to the hem and circles around to the back hem.
  • The coat narrows in as it reaches its bottom. This is a classic cut for this style of cocoon coat
  • It feels wonderfully decadent and opulent, both key design elements in Lacroix's work. It is literally like wearing a work of art.
  • Partially lined in a silk through the upper body of the coat and through the sleeves. The rest is unlined.
  • Has its hand written Haute Couture sample label in place and attached metal couture tag
  • Excellent condition

It is very full and open and has no closures so should fit almost any size. It is approximately 52 inches from neck to hem but that will come up a bit once it is on the body.
