1960s James Galanos 'Teddy Bear' Faux Fur Coat
The fabric is the first thing that catches your eye on this amazing Galanos coat. It is a faux "Teddy Bear" coat and looks and feels amazingly plush and soft. It has an almost military feel to it in the cut but with a softer, chicer edge. The collar, is rounded and small and I love the top set pockets with their button detailed flaps. The buttons are special in their own right, each is a carved wooden dome with an inset of mother of pearl. The cut of this coat is beautiful. It skims the body in a long lean line and is very flattering. It is sharply tailored and the military feel of the cut and detailing is fabulous. Galanos was known as the designer that could rival the French in terms of construction and design. He launched his atelier in 1951 and though he was never a designer that was formally made a couture house he certainly produced clothing with many of the hallmarks that define couture, thus giving him the status as being known as one of the "American Couturiers". He was particularly known for his meticulous cut, fit, and use of quality fabrics. He made clothes that lasted and this coat is absolute proof as it looks as fresh now as the day it was made. Immaculate in its construction, it is a stunning example of why Galanos is considered one of the great American couturiers. Presents as excellent condition with some notes to review in the condition notes below.
The coat is fully lined in a light brown silk and closes with front buttons. It has a good weight to it but is not unwieldy to wear. There is wear to the most edges and under where any buttons closes (super size photos to see). The fabric is strong and sturdy and this just adds to its vintage feel. This did affect the price and I feel like its a steal because it is extremely wearable and chic.
