Spring 1969 Donald Brooks Graphic Black & White Dress

Donald Brooks launched his label in 1964, added a lower priced boutique line in 1971 and by 1973 shuttered both labels. This is from his main line and dates to the mid sixties. The fabric and print have his signature flare and the sculptural lines and the cotton brocade fabric are wonderful. The fabric itself is unusual, it is a silk and cotton mix with a slightly raised brocade feel to it. Then there is the shape that is created solely through seaming and clever pleating. There is no break at the waist, rather it is all one long line of fabric with extra panels worked through each side of the hip to give it more volume as it nears the hem. The belt gives the waist detail but is not meant to really cinch it in, rather it is more of a design detail. Large domed glossy black buttons run down the front and each sleeve is finished with a matching button. I love the pockets on each hip. Each is curved and adds a pretty contrast to the graphic print. What an extraordinary piece. Excellent condition

Fully interlined in a white silk organza with an additional off-white silk crepe lining. It slips on and closes with a series of  buttons and fabric loops down the front. Each cuff has the same button and loop closure. The belt has snaps so can be easily adjusted if needed. Some very slight marks on the silk on the interior of the dress that do not show through when on and some small repairs to the inside interlining. This dress is even better in person
