Elaborate Victorian Velvet Jacket with Overlay

This elaborate and wonderful jacket is in outstanding condition and is truly a marvel. Everything about it is exquisite. It is actually two pieces. The interior jacket is a deep blue velvet and the jacket and it is cut with a wide, graceful sweep outwards as it nears the hem. The buttons - which are hand carved wood that are then covered in fine tissue silk, are hidden and lie at the top of the bodice only - the jacket is left open below the bust  - done to make room for skirting beneath it. It is pleated through the small of the back and the fabric below that fans out and down beautifully. Each sleeve is cut on the curve and each cuff decorated with fine flat bands of silk and cording. This same treatment of silk bands and cords runs around the hem and both the sleeves. It is all finished with an edging of handmade black lace that is beautiful. Interestingly, the interior of the jacket is quilted with the size of the quilting getting smaller as it nears the front. Over this sits a cape overlay that hooks at the neck and has a deep vent up the back, matching the shape of the front. It too is detailed with silk bands, cords and lace and also has a large braided silk cord and tassels at the back. It is remarkable and in excellent, museum quality condition.

Both pieces are lined in a fine black silk taffeta with the jacket's interior being quilted. The button are covered in very fine silk and do show signs of shattering to the silk but are original and seem stable. The cape has hook & eye to close at the neck. The hand work is evident throughout and these are remarkable, fine early antique pieces.
