Rare & Extraordinary 1920s Purple & Gold Metallic Lame Gown
This extraordinary and exquisite, late 1920s, early 30s bias cut gown is made from a spectacular mix of real metallic gold and purple thread. It is truly a masterpiece and really a work of art. It is one of the most spectacular gowns from this period I have ever seen and I am extremely pleased to have it in the shop as gowns like this from this period and in this condition are becoming harder and harder to find. The color mix is superb and though you do see gold and silver versions out there occasionally still, to find one in a mix of purple and gold like this is very unusual. The fluidity of the fabric cannot be conveyed and it has a rich, luxurious feel to it. You would rarely see this level of handwork on a piece today and if you did it would be at Haute Couture level pricing. The cut is very simple but extremely well executed with wide straps over the shoulder that suspend the dress as it falls in a sleek sheath, flaring out as it passes the waist and falls to the floor. The back is cut longer then the front with a beautiful train and both the back and front plunges to a low and sexy deep Vs. I love the little panel of fabric that hangs at the front between the defined and seamed bodice and this is picked up at the back with little panels of fabric running down each side of the hooked back. It is entirely cut on the bias and draped beautifully once on the body, loving around you like liquid. It is a remarkable example of the work being done during this time period and is really a treasure. The color is still vivid and the fabric remains strong & wearable. It is a very high end, excellently constructed garment. Excellent, museum quality and rare
Unlined and slips on to wear with a row of metal hook and eye down the back. Hand finishes throughout. Note that I did not pin it on the mannequin and it is a little big on her but I did not want to ruin the line by excessive pinning - it will be even better on the right sized girl. There may be the occasional darkening to the lame here and there but nothing outstanding or readily apparent and this is a natural occurrence to this type of fabric. I do not consider this to be a flaw and any tiny areas only add to the patina of this outstanding gown. For a piece that is almost 100 years old is it to be considered in outstanding, museum quality condition. The fabric does have some stretch since it is all cut on the bias.
Note that antique and twenties pieces are final sale. They will be packed exceedingly well and we only sell pieces that will stand up to the stress of shipping, however, having pieces potentially shipped multiple times through multiple customs and countries is too hard on garments that are historically important and deserve to be treated with love and care. Please purchase accordingly.
