Prettiest Spring 1974 Halston Couture Pale Pastel Peach Iridescent Sequin Easy-to-Wear Tank Dress

The Shrimpton Couture Archives

  • The twin of this dress and similar versions walked the runway for the Spring 1974 collection.
  • It was made under the creative direction of Roy Halston.
  • It is from his main couture line and these would have been made-to-order pieces during this time period.
  • This is an amazing couture Halston dress and a very rare and special find.
  • Halston defined how woman dressed in the 1970s and his dresses in particular were tremendously flattering to the body.
  • The base fabric is a very fine, light in weight silk chiffon, in the perfect pale pinky-peach colour that moves and drapes beautifully.
  • Onto this are thousands of iridescent pale peach coloured sequins that are set to lie side-by-side in vertical rows to cover the entire dress.
  • Halston used this sequin technique predominantly between about 1973 to 1978. Instead of layering and overlapping the sequins, they were laid out flat, side by side, to cover every square inch of the fabric which allowed them to capture and bounce back the maximum amount a of light
  • It is feather light and you are barely conscious of wearing anything.
  • The cut is easy and flattering to wear. It skims over the bust to the hips and then flares out slightly as it nears the hem.
  • The neckline is scooped across at the front and the back dips down, so your upper back is left bare and exposed.
  • This is a rare example of Halston at his very best and his sequin pieces are always some of the most wonderful things to find.
  • The dress slips on with no closures. It is lined in a matching silk chiffon and you can see hands stitching throughout. There is perhaps the occasional sequin missing and I see a large area at the front that has an extremely pale yellow undertone to it. It is not readily apparent, but it is there. I photoed it and I think the photo makes it look worse than it is in real life. It is still very wearable, but it is priced accordingly.

SIZE GUIDE

Please review all measurements carefully. More often than not, vintage garments do not fit any size category exactly. If in doubt, measure a garment of your own that fits and is a similar cut and compare it's measurements to the listed measurements below.
