Outstanding Fall 2004 Alexander McQueen Bias Cut Black Silk Dress w Bare Back & Silver Thread Ribbon Detailing
The Shrimpton Couture Archives
- This is a production piece from Fall 2004 and it looks to be based on the dress that walked the runway for Look 14.
- It was made under the creative direction of Alexander McQueen.
- He was quoted as saying that for the show he wanted to "strip away all theatrics and focus solely on design." I personally prefer this dress over its runway version. It is stronger in the black with the silver detailing. The crossing of the ribbon to create shape is shown more with the silver and I like its more bare and open silhouette, especially with that spectacular open cut back.
- The dress is made out of a bias cut black silk that drapes over the body beautifully. This is a dress that highlights every curve but is not overly tight in any spot. It is a real nod to the dresses of the 1920s in 1930s combined with his master level tailoring skills.
- Straps curve up and over the shoulder and then they crisscross at the back. From there they come back to the front, cross over you again and then curve around to the back and then make a final cross over at the front again. It is incredibly clever and highlights the curves of the body once it is on.
- The entire back is left bare and open other than those crossing of the straps. The neckline is scooped at the front and the back scoops low.
- The straps are beautiful. The pattern on them are made from a metallic thread in a deep smoky silver. The embroidery forms little flowers tightly bunch together. It is very pretty and yet moody at the same time. A line that he walked perfectly in many of his pieces.
- It skims over your bust, waist and hips to the final band of ribbon. Under that the skirt swirls out around you. There are yards of fabric used in the skirt so you get fantastic movement when you move. I love that the back of the skirt is cut slightly longer than the front so you get a bit of a sweeping feel behind you that picks up on the low curve of the back.
- This is really an outstanding piece of McQueen and is sensual and amazing on the body.
- Fully lined in a black silk and slips on to wear with no closures. To wear you slip it on and the bias cut drapes over you and simply falls into place. I see one slight scuff on the silk on the front skirt, and there is a little nick on the back side of one strap. The dress is in its original unaltered length.
- Tagged a vintage McQueen 42 and the bias cut should allow it to fit a range of sizes. I have put the comfortable range of measurements when laying flat below. The length may come up a bit once on because of the bias cut.

SIZE GUIDE
Please review all measurements carefully. More often than not, vintage garments do not fit any size category exactly. If in doubt, measure a garment of your own that fits and is a similar cut and compare it's measurements to the listed measurements below.
