1976 Yuki by Gnyuki Torimaru Deep Blue Jersey Draped Halter Dress w its Matching Jersey Jacket

  • This dress and jacket set dates to 1976.
  • It was made under the creative direction of Gnyuki Torimaru.
  • Gnyuki Torimaru started out as an architect before becoming a textile engineer and then a designer. He worked for Louis Feraud, Pierre Cardin and Norman Norell before striking out on his own in 1972.
  • Shortly after the launch of his couture label he teamed up with Rembrandt, and also did a second line called Yuki2, to produce a ready-to-wear line that had the feel of his couture pieces but was available at locations outside of his atelier.
  • His name became very well known around the globe after creating pieces for Princess Diana’s visit to Japan in 1986.
  • An entire exhibit was dedicated to him at the Kobe Fashion Museum "Gnyuki Torimaru: Legendary Fashion Designer" in 2019.
  • A similar dress was famously shot on Jerry Hall for Vogue in 1976
  • The fabric on both pieces is a light in weight deep blue jersey that has a soft slinky feel to it.
  • The dress and jacket are both very easy to wear despite their dramatic presence. Both have a loose and easy cut through the entire body.
  • The dress slips over the head to wear and is suspended by straps that curve up and around on either side of your neck.
  • The entire front and back have been gathered into the middle of the strap. This gathering at the front is key to the design of the dress. It creates that beautiful draped feel that runs all the way to the hem all the way around you.
  • The sides drape down from the bust area and it is very full and generous through the waist and hips.
  • From there it swoops down to the hem to create that unbelievably dramatic effect. The bias cut lets it move around you beautifully when you move.
  • Over that is a simple jacket that also slips on and has no closures.
  • The colour is notched and the sleeves extend out the soft shoulders. They are cut to slightly narrow as they reach their ends and are meant to sit, just past the elbow.
  • The body of the jacket is gathered into a shoulder yolk, and then it falls freely around you. It stops just short of length of the dress to create a pretty silhouette.
  • Everything about this dress has a feel of organic movement and drama. It is a remarkable dress and jacket set and even more stunning on.
  • I always love when something has two pieces because it really lets you mix a match with things you already own.
  • Both pieces are unlined and slip onto wear. The dress has a hook and eye above a small keyhole at the back up the neck. The jacket has no closures. Its easy cut should allow it to fit a range of sizes. On a smaller frame it will just drape more.
  • Both pieces are tagged a vintage UK Yuki 12
  • Excellent condition.

SIZE GUIDE

Please review all measurements carefully. More often than not, vintage garments do not fit any size category exactly. If in doubt, measure a garment of your own that fits and is a similar cut and compare it's measurements to the listed measurements below.
