I love these Malcolm Starr pieces - they are little works of art and really the best of the whole sixties arts and crafts movement. With the current trend back to maxis they also seem even more relevant. There is something shockingly fresh about wearing an elaborate and colorful maxi skirt with a chic modern top and shoes. This one is the classic merry go round skirt with its lovely felt applique riders circling the entire skirt. Gold braid highlights the design and a variety of fabrications are used to create the design. The riders literally pop off the skirt with their little 3D accents! An amazing combination of color and textures its in wonderful condition!

1970s Malcolm Starr by Youssef Rizkallah Sequinned Metallic Gold Lurex & Printed Red Silk Maxi Dress
I Have a Question
Youseef joined the Malcolm Starr label in 1969 and remained as the head designer until 1975. The years that Youssef headed the line are among some of my favourites. While at Malcom Starr he designed pieces that had his name on it and the Malcolm Starr International label as well. Rizkallah was born in Egypt and studied at the Ecole de dessin appliqué and the Ecole des arts decoratifs in Paris. His designs seem to combine that sense of couture drama and cut that he learned while in Paris with the color and vividness of his homeland.
The colors in this dress are amazing and when combined with the gold metallic thread that runs through the silk from top to bottom, the final effect is just beautiful. The exterior is made from a printed red silk chiffon. Woven through the silk are little golden dots made out of a metallic gold lurex. This adds a subtle shine to the entire dress. Picking up on that are curving bands of gold sequins that have been hand applied onto the silk. These follow the curving parts of the design on the silk. Some parts of the pattern have an even denser application of the sequins for added glitz and to highlight that part of the design. This multi-layered textural feeling makes the fabric feel rich and exotic. This is then layered over an interior red silk lining through the skirt and front bodice. The back and sleeves are not lined so you catch a glimpse of skin through the silk. The sleeves are wonderful. Each extends from the bodice in a wide swatch of fabric and then taper down as they reach the wrist so that they billow out. The neck is simple and slightly scooped. The skirt falls from the waist and gently widens out as it nears the floor. It is a beautiful, dramatic piece and it is even better on person and on an actual body. Excellent condition.
Fully lined in a deep red silk with the sleeves, shoulders and upper back left unlined. It closes with a back painted metal zipper from the waist down and buttons above that to the neck. Each sleeve has a snap at the cuff.

I Have a Question
This is likely the early work of Elinor Simmons before her name went on the labels. She designed for the Malcolm Starr label from the early 1960s to 1972. You can see her influence in this classic feeling Malcolm Starr dress with its almost sculptural lines and addition of the rhinestone embellishments on the bodice.
At fist glance the fabric used almost looks quilted, but upon closer inspection you realize that the little quilting lines are pressed directly into the fabric. This gives the dress an instant shot of added texture that is very pretty. The fabric seems to be a cotton or cotton mix. This allows it holds the shape and the colour beautifully. The bodice skims over the torso with darling little capped sleeves. The waist line is defined with a seam and set just a touch higher then the natural waist for a hint of an empire feel. The neck is high with a notched front. The skirt neatly falls from the waist and gradually widens out to just about the knee or slightly under. The fabric is a pretty pinky red that has a bit of a cherry feel to it in person. I love the little sprays of flowers that cover the surface. The centres of the flowers are finished with little coloured rhinestones and this gives the dress a touch of glamour. The colours used are wonderful and the dress is gorgeous. I love that it has pockets hidden away along the seams of the skirt. It is really a lovely dress. Excellent condition.
Fully lined in a red silk and it closes with a painted back metal zipper. It appears to have been worn very little if at all. Note that the colour is more a pink red in person and even better then how it photoed

I Have a Question
There is currently a beaded Malcolm Starr dress that is available in the shop and the girl I got that off of rang me up recently to tell me that she had found its matching, unlabeled coat. It is a great stand alone piece and I immediately grabbed it for the shop as well. These are most likely the early work of Elinor Simmons before her name went on the labels. She designed for the Malcolm Starr label from the early 1960s to 1972.
This is a phenomenal full length silk satin evening or opera coat. It is exquisite in its cut and design with the simplicity and stark lines allowing that beautiful silk satin to shine through. The color is a statement in and of itself ans it is that same brilliant pink that the dress was done in. The interior is lined in a heavy matching pink silk and this monochromatic approach is stunning as it does not break the long line of pure color that is created. The shoulders are structured but without any inner padding so still has a soft feel to them. The sleeves are cut to just above the wrists as was the fashion during this time period. It is cut to skim and float over the body and then sweeps fully to the floor in a beautiful column of pink silk. The back has a belted detailing to break the very long line. It buttons at the front with silk covered buttons in a double row at the bust. Each button hole is hand set and properly finished. The collar is neat and it is embellished with a dense application of gold toned tube beads mixed with seed beads and prong set rhinestones. This same detailing is what covers the bodice of the dress (which you can see by clicking here). It is stunning and very well made. Excellent condition
Fully lined in a heavy pink silk and closes with hand covered silk buttons at the front. Proper finished buttonholes and hand finishes. Pockets along the seam of each hip. A slight bit of grubbiness here and there along the edge of the hem. Note that color is a bit deeper then how it photoed and even better in person.

I Have a Question
This coat would have been designed while Youssef Rizkallah headed the company. Youseef joined the Malcolm Starr label in 1969 and remained as the head designer until 1975. The years that Youssef headed the line are among some of my favorites and in particular his pieces that utilize quilting and patchwork are truly iconic. Rizkallah was born in Egypt and studied at the Ecole de dessin appliqué and the Ecole des arts decoratifs in Paris. His designs seem to combine that sense of couture lines that he gained in Paris with the color and vividness of his homeland.
This is a wonderful piece that can be worn as either a coat or a dress thanks to the zip front that completely opens. It has the added provenance of being the twin to the one featured in the ad campaign for 1970. The base of the coat is a black fabric that feels like a light wool that has a slight ribbed texture in it. The entire coat is detailed with a combination of a red braiding and red ric rac that follows the lines of the coat so emphasize the pattern and cut. Elaborate designs adorn run over the body of the piece and all around the hem. Pops of a white cotton are used to create even more drama. A floral patchwork is set into all of this on big curving and angular cuts that anchor the design and give a pop of contrast to the the starkness of the red, black and white. The collar has a beautifully curved cut out to it and the skirting of the piece flares out dramatically and is quite wide. The sleeves are deliberately kept simple so that all you see is that spectacular design through the body of the dress/coat. It is dramatic, wonderful and rare. Excellent condition
Fully lined in a hand set red silk and closes down the front with an unpainted silver zipper. It appears to have been worn very little if at all. Tagged a vintage 8

I Have a Question
This beautiful and happy feeling dress is one of my favorites from the pieces of Malcolm Starr that I have had in the shop. It was designed by Elinor Simmons, who was a young designer that Malcolm brought in to the company to design a higher end line for him in 1965. She eventually left in 1972 which giving us a window within to date the dress. Everything about this dress suggest the late 1960s.
The silk fabric that the dress is made out of is very pretty and fresh feeling with huge flowers printed across its entire surface. The bodice skims over the torso with darling little capped sleeves and a high set, ribbon detailed waist line. The neck is detailed in a double band of the same black braiding used at the waist. This use of a bit of a darker color anchors the design beautifully and contrasts against the pastels colors of the silk. The skirt falls to the floor, gradually widening out as it nears the hem. I love the fullness that this creates. The silk used has a almost polished cotton finish to it but with a touch more texture. The fabric choice really holds the shape of the dress beautifully and the color is wonderful. I love that it has pockets hidden away at the inset seams that run down the front. It really is a lovely dress. Excellent condition with a note below to review
Fully lined in an ivory muslin through the skirt and an ivory silky rayon through the bodice. It closes with a painted back metal zipper. The hem of the skirt is finished with ribbon. Some grubbiness to the edge of the hem. It appears that the back was taken out at some point alongside the zipper. It could be left as is or easily taken in again to be smaller. I also see what looks to be maybe a faint touch of a pen mark near the zipper. Please review the last photo after the shot of the label. Otherwise it appears to have been worn very little.
