c.1974 Lanvin by Jules-Francois Crahay Pretty Printed Dress w Scarf

I Have A Question: c.1974 Lanvin by Jules-Francois Crahay Pretty Printed Dress w Scarf

This would have been designed by Belgian-born Jules-Francois Crahay, who headed the Lanvin ateliers from 1964-1984. He has been "noted as one of fashion’s great colorists with his colorful patterns making his 1970s Lanvin designs hugely desirable and influential." His realm is one of my favorites for the house and the period through the late sixties and into the 70s in particular. He was a genius at print and color and he pushed the envelope in terms of using the "new" fabrics available during this time period.

This vintage Lanvin dress has a gorgeous bright color and print combination on a black base. The wool jersey fabric it is made of is light in weight and held color exceptionally well. The colors are still crisp, bright and true. I love when I find great examples of this label from this time period in the label's history as it is a particular favorite for me. The dress is sleeveless with a V scooped neckline on both the front and back. The back dips lower then the front does. It buttons down the back and I think its amazing that each button is perfectly done so that it has one of the spots exactly laid out over it, so that the pattern at the back is not interrupted. The waist nips in and the skirt falls to just above the ankle depending on how tall you are, and it slightly widens as it nears the hem. I love how those stripes contrast against the dot print and are used to define the cut of the dress. It also has a matching scarf that is hand finished with a yarn trim. Overall great condition with notes below to review

Fully lined and closes with hand covered buttons down the back to the waist and a low back painted metal zipper below that. Has its original scarf. Note that there are some minor nicks out of the fabric around the lower portion of the skirt. I have photoed the two worst areas - please review the two shots after the label photo. There are a scattering of teeny ones here and there around the lower skirt. All are stable and it stood up to cleaning just fine. This was taken into consideration when pricing.

c.1984 Vicky Tiel Couture Metallic Gold & Black Lace Pouf Skirt Mini Dress

I Have A Question: c.1984 Vicky Tiel Couture Metallic Gold & Black Lace Pouf Skirt Mini Dress

Vicky Tiel was backed by Elizabeth Taylor as a young designer after working on the costume for 'Whats New Pussycat'. After a stint with a partner she launched her self named label in Paris in 1970. She as one of the very early boutique owner/designer that offered a ready-to-wear option in Paris. That said, her clothes often walk a fine line between ready-to-wear and couture in terms of their construction and techniques used. By the mid to late seventies her style had developed into the ultra sexy and feminine clothing that she is now known best for. By the eighties and into the nineties, she had a cult celebrity following. This is a stunning example of just how sexy and dramatic her work could get.

This dramatic little dress by Vicky Tiel is fabulous. It is made from a fantastic metallic gold lace type fabric that has a black base over which the gold has been directly applied. This allows the black to peek through and the gold really highlights the pattern in the fabric. It gives it extra depth and visual interest. This then sits over an inner fitted base that is structured and molded to the body. It is shaped like a corset inside to give you shape with both boning and inner structure. The front has a plunging version of a sweetheart neckline and I love the dramatic curve of it. The bodice is molded tot he torso and covered with gathers that emphasize your curves. Amazing little cap sleeves sit off the shoulders and wrap around the upper arms. The waist nips in and it is fitted around the upper hips. Under that the skirt explodes out in a dramatic pouf of fabric that is fall all the way around. the shape is held by layers of stiffened organza and tulle under the gold. Countless modern pieces right now are based on dresses just like this and I am happy to have this amazing original in the shop. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a black silk and closes with a back zipper. Very well constructed with the entire inner bodice shaped, boned and fitted. It appears to have never been worn or worn very little. Handwritten tag, marked a vintage 42

Bust: to 18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Natural waist: 13" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have a Question

c2003 Alexander McQueen Silk Chiffon Cherry Print Backless Dress

I Have A Question: c2003 Alexander McQueen Silk Chiffon Cherry Print Backless Dress

This wonderful dress is from the 2003-2004 era and displays the hyper feminine, nod the the thirties and forties that was running through some of his work during this time period. It is made of feather light silk chiffon that is cut to float around the body. This is contrasted with the extreme molded breast cups. These are almost rigid and shaped to give you perfectly rounded breasts. The sit independently and are further highlighted with the covering of the silk chiffon and the way it is set in a provocative ruffle along the upper edge. Under this the chiffon is cut and shaped by seaming. It is a play on the way thirties dress were made but here he takes the curving seams tot he extreme and almost build shapes using them. The hem line is asymmetrical and hangs at different lengths. The dress is suspended by tiny little straps that curve around the neck and then twist and buttons into place while crossing over them selves. These ,eave the skin of the back bare. The second you move the skirts waft around you and the curves of the body are shown underneath. It is very sensual and very beautiful. I love the cherry print that covers the silk. Literally the 'cherry on top'. Excellent condition.

Fully lined on a very fine white bias cut silk. It slip on to wear and the ties button onto place. there is one more that runs across the lower back but it would not button into place on my dress form. The ties are twisted together on spots and this is deliberate. The breast cups are molded. Tagged vintage McQueen 40. Bias cut so may come up in length a bit depending on your frame.

Bust: approx 17" flat across from side seam to side seam but with an open back
Each cup is probably a B, small C cup
Waist: adjustable
Hips: to 18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Bodice: 5.5" from top of bodice to inner seam under bust
Length: approx 57" from shoulder to hem at longest point

I Have a Question

1960s North Beach Leather Suede & Feather Halter Top & Wrap Skirt Set

I Have A Question: 1960s North Beach Leather Suede & Feather Halter Top & Wrap Skirt Set

This is an extremely rare and early set by North Beach Leather dating to the late 1960s, early 1970s. Michael Hoban and Frank Morgan started the label in 1967 and quickly gained a huge following. Elvis Presley, Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John... all major celebrities that wore the label. It was expensive in its day and each piece was made entirely by hand.

The set is entirely hand crafted using a combination of a deep chocolate suede, beads and feathers. The set is made up of two pieces. The top is a tiny halter top that ties onto place with the long braided suede cords that curve over the shoulders, cross and loop into the sides of the halter and then tie at the low back. This leaves you very bare across the back. The front dips low between each side of the halter triangles and the entire midriff is exposed. Hand placed feathers adorn the center. The same feather detailing is picked up on the skirt. The skirt is cut long and then wraps and buttons into place. Each button is hand covered in a matching suede and each button hole hand finished with their signature whip stitching. Feathers are hand placed in little bunches that are each finished with a a leather base that is accented with a hand made clay bead. These run down the high slit on the one side under the buttons and then around the hem. All of the edges are finished with whip stitching and you can easily see the hand work inside as well. It is incredible and a very rare example of the early work they were doing. Excellent condition

Made by hand. The top ties into place and the skirt buttons. Any variation in the suede is natural. Please read the note at the bottom of the description regrading feather pieces

Top
Bust: each triangle measures 4.5" across at its widest point. The base part of the front measures 17.5" across. The ties at the back make it variable in size otherwise
Skirt
Waist: 13" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 16" flat across from side seam to side seam
Skirt: 43" from waist to hem including feathers
Slit: approx 34" from hem up

I have a small collection of historically important, key designer labelled vintage furs, feather and fur/feather trimmed pieces stored away in my archives that I will be slowly posting on the site over the next couple of years until I have none left. I will no longer be buying furs for the shop moving forward and have not purchased anything for several years now. I feel like times have changed and while there still is a place for vintage furs for some, including collectors and historians, many modern girls are choosing other options. Many of the pieces in my collection are representative of the designer during a set time period in history that was different then our modern outlook. I have decided that the best course to handle this controversial issue is to let the pieces I have go rather then sit in a cold storage unit. All fur and feather pieces are final sale.

1980s Unlabelled Jacqueline de Ribes Pink Floral Print Silk Dress

I Have A Question: 1980s Unlabelled Jacqueline de Ribes Pink Floral Print Silk Dress

The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted a Jacqueline de Ribes exhibit in 2015-16, giving her work an extra dose of much needed attention. De Ribes was know as 'one of the most celebrated fashion personas of the 20th century'. She began making dresses for herself and eventually opened her own label in 1982 at the age of 53, producing collections for the next 12 years.

This beautiful print silk dress looks like it could have just stepped off the runway. Her signature long and lean lines are combined with a genius cut and a inner foundation that shapes and molds the body. The dress is made out of a fine silk that has a vibrant floral design that combines a bright pink, red, deep raspberry and green. The effect of all those brilliant colors together is wonderful. The bodice is fitted with hand placed, soft gathers the lie over an inner, built in, foundation that curves over and past the hips on the interior. This gives you both shape and support. Wide silk straps curve up and over the shoulders and pick up the gathered detailing on the bodice. The back plunges low leaving your back bare and I love how it is squared off.  The waist nips in and the skirt flows to the floor in a long line of fabric from there. At the back, the skirt has a high slit to allow you to walk and move easily. Inside the dress is finished to demi-couture standards and by hand. It looks to have never been worn or worn very little. Excellent condition.

Fully interlined in a white silk and closes with a hand set back zipper. A panel of fabric crosses the back and hooks into place. The inner bust has a full to the hip corseted interior with built in cups, boning and a waist stay. There is no de Ribes label present but it has the correct hand written style/fabric tag for her pieces

Bust: to 16" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have a Question

1973 Oscar de la Renta Brilliant Pink Backless Halter Dress w Front Keyhole

I Have A Question: 1973 Oscar de la Renta Brilliant Pink Backless Halter Dress w Front Keyhole

I have had a similar dress to this one in the shop before that was in a darker color combination and with slightly different neckline, but I think that I love the vibrant pink of this one even more. It is a stunning design and I was very happy to find that it was the dress featured in the ad campaign for the brand in 1973 as seen in the reference photo included her.

The dress is made out of an easy to wear and travel with silk jersey in a bright vibrant pink. Using this particular fabric not only made it travel friendly - you can literally pull it out of a suitcase and it will be virtually wrinkle free - but it also allows the colors to stay as crisp and true as they would have been when it was produced. I love the brightness of it and it is even better in person. The dress is cut halter style at the front where it is cleverly sewn down the upper center part to stay closed and then opens below that. From just under the bust to the waist seam is left open to shows off an expanse of bare skin. The straps cross over them selves and then wrap around the neck to close. This leaves the back completely bare to the waist. Under that the skirt falls to the floor and even has pockets on each hip. Excellent condition with one tiny note below

Unlined and ties at the neck. Closes with a low back painted metal zipper and snaps at the waist band. Hand finished. I see a small area of a nick to the fabric near the side seam towards the front. Please see the photo after the label shot. It is very minor and appears to be stable. The color is brighter and a more vivid pink in person. Tagged a vintage 4. Note the waist does close properly - it was just a little small on the dress form.

Bust: variable with no true side seams
Waist: 12.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: open
Bodice: approx 15" from shoulder to waist
Length: 41" from waist to hem

I Have A Question: Recent 2000s Emilio Pucci Sleeveless Pink Printed Silk Jersey Dress New w Tags

This is a more recent and modern interpretation of the classic Pucci dress and it is gorgeous. The print is a spin on one of his classics archival prints which gives it an amazing vintage feel. Pucci's colours and prints were mixed with a masterful hand and even when the modern day house recreates the archives looks it is a testament to his genius. This is one has been done in a happy and joyful mix of pinks. The dress is made out of a lightweight silk jersey which is a fabric that the label has long preferred using because of the way it moves and takes colour. The silk is screened with the print that you see and it runs down the entire dress and all the way around. The bodice is sleeveless and cut to skim over the bust. The front is cut into a V neckline that has an intricate geometric printed border following the V and then it curves around the waist. Under that the skirt flows to the floor and it is cut to supermodel length. The pink has been used from head to toe with pops of the white and tangerine that work beautifully with each other.  The dress is wonderfully bright and happy in feel. It has its original tags and has never been worn. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a pink silk jersey and closes with a side hidden, painted metal zipper. The fabric is a silk jersey and does have some stretch. Note that the color is more intense in person and is even better then how it photoed. Tagged a modern US4. Original hang tag attached.

Bust: 15-17" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: to 14" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have a Question

1970s George Stavropoulous Couture Black Silk Chiffon Caped Shoulder Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s George Stavropoulous Couture Black Silk Chiffon Caped Shoulder Dress

George Stavropoulos was known for his evening wear and his signature looks that often involved draping and the use of multiple layers of silk done on a bias cut. He focused on cut and fabric to convey the beauty of each piece. It was said that his gowns "seemed to float on air". He launched his label in 1960 and soon was dressing women like Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Kennedy, Barbra Streisand and Maria Callas. His dresses were made by hand and to couture standards. By the early 1980s a gown by him started at around $8500 and they went up in cost from there - that starting price point equals to around $26,000US in today's dollars. So when you buy a vintage Stavropoulos gown you are getting incredible value for your money.

The simplicity of this dress when you first look at it hides the incredible craftsmanship used to create it. I love the light and airy feel of the dress that is created by the yards and yards of silk chiffon used in its construction. Working in this type of fabric is already difficult and this would have taken many hours of work to execute the making of this dress by hand. The column of silk that you see has been cut on the bias. Incredibly, there are four full layers of silk used to make up the body of the dress. This gives it enough of an opaqueness to wear and also gives it a lovely movement and makes it very comfortable to wear once on the body. The layers sit over each other perfectly aligned and in a sheath silhouette so it is very easy to wear. The sleeves are made of a single layer of the chiffon. On one shoulder is an attached long panel that gives it a caped effect. This trails all the way down to the hem and adds a touch of drama as you move. It flows behind you as you walk and it creates a very pretty effect with its slight transparency. It is very beautiful. Excellent condition with a couple of minor notes below

The body of the dress has four layers of silk chiffon. It closes with a hand set, zipper at the back. Immaculately constructed. It appears to have been worn very little if at all. The bias cut allows for some range in the measurements as indicated below. There is the slightest bit of a pull on one sleeve. I see the slightest bit of teeny snags to the silk here and there but very very minor and just mentioned for accuracy. Please see the last photo after the label shot.

Shoulders: 14.5
Sleeves: 25"
Bust: to 18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: to 16" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: to 18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Length: 43" from neck to hem and may come up a little when on due to the bias cut

2010s Balmain Black Jersey Dress w Strong Shoulders, Front Knot & Keyhole

I Have A Question: 2010s Balmain Black Jersey Dress w Strong Shoulders, Front Knot & Keyhole

This is a spectacular bold silhouette Balmain dress by Olivier Rousteing. The fabric is great. It's just heavy enough to hold the shape and structure that the dress has but without feeling thick or too structured. The shoulders have Rousteing's signature bold and sharp shape and the sleeves taper to the wrist from there. The fabric on the skirt is draped in towards the center front so that you get the effect that the hips are wrapped in it. The front bodice also is wrapped down and into that center knot giving the illusion of an even smaller waist. The bodice of the dress has a long open keyholes at the front and this is balanced by a high neckline. At the back, the Balmain signature chunky zipper runs down the back. It is spectacular and sexy and a collectible both now and as a future vintage piece. It appears to have never been worn. Excellent condition.

Unlined and closes at the back with the signature chunky brass Balmain zipper. Padding in shoulders. Appears unworn. Tagged a modern Balmain 40. The fabric does have some stretch

Sleeves: 27.5"
Shoulders: to 17" due to the shoulder pads that extend beyond the natural shoulder
Bust: 17-18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 13.5-15" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 16-18" flat across from side seam to side seam

I Have a Question

Rare 1950s Jacques Heim Full Skirted Black Net Dress w Gold Thread Lace

I Have A Question: Rare 1950s Jacques Heim Full Skirted Black Net Dress w Gold Thread Lace

Jacques Heim began his career working at his parents fur business. In 1923 he took that business over and made it into his own vision. Heim began designing a line of made to order, in-house couture pieces that used original fabrics, most notably, those of Sonia Delauney. In 1930 his younf label became an official member of Haute Couture and his self-named label, Jacques Heim, was born. Jacques remained at the helm of his business until his death in 1967. The label was shuttered by 1969.

This dress is a wonderful example of his work in the 1950s. The label has the additional wording of 'sur autorization speciale, Maria Carine Paris' (made by Maria Carine Paris with special authorization). Garments with this label are best explained by this excerpt: 'Maria Carine was owned by Maria Moutet-Chenu. She worked with four couturiers: Heim, Desses, LaRoche, and Lanvin. After the couture showings, each couturier would give her sketches based upon the garments they had just shown. Moutet-Chenu made the toiles which were approved by the designers. Then each garment was cut individually by hand in the Maria Carine workrooms in Paris using the same fabrics that were used for the couture garment. Maria employed hundreds of seamstresses, many of whom worked in their own homes. They sewed each garment individually to exacting standards. This was the highest of early high-end ready-to-wear.'

In other words - this is a fully authorized piece by the couture house. It would have been completely overseen by Heim and was the way the house would have produced demi-couture and ready-to-wear pieces for their clients. Maria and her seamstresses were only utilized to produce garments in this method for a small window of time before more mass market production methods took over that were a lot cheaper. It is a wonderful example of a very small moment in time when the quality was still very high.

I love the classic cut of this dress. It is cut to skim over your curves of the bodice and the sleeves are an extended curve of the fabric of the bust so that there are no seams at the shoulder or arm to break the line. The waist nips in and the skirt is cut slightly slimmer at the front and then very full at the back. I have styled it over a light crinoline to show you the shape. If you wished to get a very full skirted look you could but not without adjusting the inner lining which is cut in a more straight shape. The fabric is wonderful. It is a deep, non-metallic French gold lace that is applied over a fine black silk net. I love that all the edges are left so that the follow the floral pattern in the lace to give them a softer, curving scalloped finish. The sleeves are cut tot he elbow and they, along with the upper shoulders, are left unlined so you see a peek of skin through the lace. It is simplicity mixed with a masterful seaming and cutting and extraordinary fabric. Hand finishes and extra detail throughout. Excellent condition

Fully in a black taffeta and closes with a back painted metal zipper. Pinking shear finishes to the interior seams and hand finished throughout. The added crinoline is not included.

I Have a Question

1980s Christian Dior Gold Coated Metallic Oversized Trench Coat

I Have A Question: 1980s Christian Dior Gold Coated Metallic Oversized Trench Coat

This Is an amazing trench coat that has all the flash and excess that was the best of the eighties. It's by Dior and has that great oversized feel to it that was so prevalent during that decade. The fabric that it is made out of is coated with a gold covering that gives it that fabulous metallic feel. It is fairly light weight as result. The styling is classic trench with buttons straps across each shoulder and around each cuff. Pockets sit on each hip and there is a double row of buttons at the front to close it. It has its original tie belt made of the same coated gold material. It is meant to be big and oversized so should work on a range of sizes. Inside it is lined with a matching gold toned fabric that has the CD logo throughout. The coat is not 100% perfect but still very wearable and so fabulous I could not pass it by. Its listed at a steal as a result of its small flaws but has year of glitzy over the top life left in it. Overall great condition but please read the full condition notes below.

Fully lined in a logo embossed gold toned silky rayon. Closes at the front with buttons and the tie belt. Pockets on each hip and light padding in each shoulder. Tagged a vintage 8 but meant to be worn oversized. There are areas where the gold is flaking off. Most notably the collar, inside and out; the tops of each shoulder of the sleeves. The sleeves, where the belt ties and other areas all through out have signs of cracking ad minor flaking as well. I photoed the worst of i and you can super size the photos to see all. Still very wearable with lots of life.

Sleeves: 24"

I Have a Question

1960s Schiaparelli Convertible Two Length Fox Fur & Leather Coat

I Have A Question: 1960s Schiaparelli Convertible Two Length Fox Fur & Leather Coat

This is an incredible fur and the workmanship is of the best possible quality. Schiaparelli is of course celebrated for her bold designs and elements of wit and the unexpected. The furs being produced under the Schiaparelli name during this time period were of the best quality and that quality still shows even 50 some odd years later.  The pelts are soft and supple. It is surprisingly light for a coat made during this time period - another nod to the quality and workmanship. The coat does double duty as it can be worn at two different lengths. It does this by having the bottom portion of the coat attach by a zipper and snaps that are cleverly set along a hidden seam. When they are zipped together there is no break at all in the design. When the bottom panel is in place the coat falls to just about the knee. Once this panel is removed the coat falls to just past the hip. It is done in rows of fur that are interspersed with rows of light grey leather. The collar is big and oversized and it has its original matching leather tie belt to cinch in the waist. Excellent condition

Fully lined in an ivory silky rayon. There are no front closures, rather it wraps and ties with the belt.  Hidden pickets along the top of the row at the hip. The bottom portion zips off and there are fabric covered, hand set snaps at either end to keep the fabric above and below the zipper perfectly in place. There are a couple of tiny marks to the lining. The wrap style should allow it to fit a variety of sizes.

Sleeves: 24"
Shoulders: approx 17" on the inside
Inside bust: 18.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Inside waist: approx 18.5" flat across from side seam to side seam but adjustable depending on how you tie it
Hips: open
Length: 27" from neck to 1st hem, 39" to second with the lower panel on

I have a small collection of historically important, key designer labelled vintage furs and fur trimmed pieces stored away in my archives that I will be slowly posting on the site over the next couple of years until I have none left. Fur coats are final sale.

I Have a Question

1970s Ruben Panis Silver & Black Sequin Low Front & Back Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Ruben Panis Silver & Black Sequin Low Front & Back Dress

Ruben Panis was known for his flair for drama. He started off his career designing costumes for showgirls in Las Vegas and eventually honed his skills by working for both James Galanos and Norman Norell. His gowns were worn by many Hollywood icons like Elizabeth Taylor, Zsa Zsa Gabor. At the height of his career he was charging up to $5000 for a dress which at the time was an exorbitant amount. This is an excellent example of his work and very well made

A light silk chiffon base through the majority of the dress makes this gown much lighter on than it may appear with that dense and heavy coverage of sequins. The way it is cut is very old Hollywood. The dress is sleeveless with and the bodice is plunged at both the front and the back, right to the seam that runs under the bust. Here the silver and black rows are set to angle down towards the center. This is then contrasted on the skirt where they are set on a angle that wraps around the body. The skirt is long and lean with a side slit to allow you to walk. All of the sequins are hand sewn into place in double rows of silver alternating with black. The overall effect - especially at a distance is really extraordinary. This is an excellent example of his work and very well made. Take particular note of the way that all of the rows line up at the seams whenever they can. That takes extra time, care and planning that gives you an idea of the quality of the dress. Excellent condition.

The bodice is fully lined in a black silk and the skirt is backed with a black chiffon. It closes with a back, painted metal & nylon zipper at the low back. Note that the back zips up a little more then shown, It was too small on the mannequin to zip the last 3-ish inches

Bust: 17" flat across from side seam to side seam
Under bust: 13.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Natural waist: 13" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 17,5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Bodice: 11" from top of shoulder to center front
Skirt: 44" from center waist seam to hem with another 2.5" turned up under hem
Side slit: 21" from hem up

1970s Halston Bright Gold Metallic Lame Lurex Top & Pant Set

I Have A Question: 1970s Halston Bright Gold Metallic Lame Lurex Top & Pant Set

This is a gorgeous golden set by Halston that combines his classic and easy to wear tunic with a more straight leg pant. Both pieces are made from a lightweight, bright gold metallic lurex lame fabric. It is almost weightless and feels effortless to wear. The ease of the pieces combined with the metallic fabric make this an easy way to be full on glamorous while still being entirely comfortable. This is the kind of outfit that will easily take you from a big evening event to entertaining at home with flats. You can wear the pieces together as shown, or as separates. The tunic is just long enough that you could probably get away with wearing it as a micro-mini. The pants are cut with straight, wide legs and slip on. Over that the tunic sits with a loose cut. Cinching in the waist with a belt would give you a whole other way to style it. Wonderful piece. Excellent condition.

Unlined and slips on to wear with elastic on the waist of the pants. Each cuff of the tunic has a loop and button to close. The fabric has a touch of transparency to it. The loose and easy cut should allow it to fit a variety of sizes.

1981 Bill Tice Nude Peach Colour One Shoulder Dress w Gold Detailing

I Have A Question: 1981 Bill Tice Nude Peach Colour One Shoulder Dress w Gold Detailing

I have had the black and gold version of this one shoulder dress by Bill Tice, but the is the first I have had in this wonderful nude peach color. Versions of his one shoulder pieces sit in the closet of countless celebrities like Rachel Zoe  & Nicole Richie (and my own!). This is one of those dresses that you know is going to work every time you put it on. Whenever I get my hands on these they fly out the door. It is insanely sexy with an easy to wear caftan feel that is suspended from one single shoulder. It is made of a liquid jersey that feels amazing on and has the added bonus of traveling very well. It is the kind of piece you can throw into your suit case and slip on with either flats or heels when you reach some far off destination and be perfectly ready to go. The inner dress is long and slim and this is topped by a wrapped looser overlay that is cut on a curving angle. The way it is constructed the inner dress is seamed to just about the hop and then its open under there, with coverage provided by the wrapped overlay. This allows a bit of leg to show when you walk or sit. The single shoulder has a knotted flower detail and both the flower and the neckline edging are accented by ribbons of gold lame. Excellent condition.

Unlined and slips on to wear. The easy fit should allows it to work on a variety of sizes. It appears to have been worn very little if at all.

1970s Halston Deep Copper Gold Metallic Lame Lurex Caftan Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s Halston Deep Copper Gold Metallic Lame Lurex Caftan Dress

This Halston IV caftan, is a made from a stunning deep copper gold lurex lame and is an easy way to be instantly dressed up and still be entirely comfortable. The simple, classic design makes it is an easy way to be instantly dressed up and still entirely comfortable. I have seen Rachel Zoe wear the twin of this one around LA. I have also have had these in the shop in solid colored jersey, but the lame ones are just that little bit extra special I think. These easy to wear caftan dresses can go from the beach to entertaining at home with flats, to full on evening glamor. It is cut deceptively simple with a slit front neck and a second slit that goes up to the knee up the center seam at the front. The rest is loose and cut to skim over the body. The sleeves flow out from the body of the caftan and narrow down at the wrist. The skirt flows to the floor and widens out as it reaches the hem. You can wear this loose as I have photoed it here, or belt it if you want to add more shape and definition. This is a wonderful piece with all the lines you love from Halston. Excellent condition.

Unlined and slips on to wear. The fabric has a slight transparency to it. The loose and easy cut should allow it to fit a range of sizes

Sleeves: approx. 22"
Shoulders: no defined seam
Bust: to 20" flat across from side seam to side seam and it widens to approx 26" around the hips

Prettiest 1970s George Stavropoulos Coral Silk Chiffon Dress Capelet & Sash

I Have A Question: Prettiest 1970s George Stavropoulos Coral Silk Chiffon Dress Capelet & Sash

George Stavropoulos is one of my favorite designers and I love having his work in the shop. His clients included Elizabeth Taylor and opera singer Maria Callas and part of why they flocked to him was his ability to create stunning evening wear. His hallmark pieces were based on simple lines but with a masterful attention to construction. He shunned overt ornamentation and instead focused on cut and fabric to convey his vision for each piece. This is an amazing example of his work during this time period. His pieces were made by hand made and to demi-couture standards.

The dress is beautiful and comes with a matching capelet and an extra long sash. I love the lightness and airiness that is created by his use of the silk chiffon. The color is amazing in person. The photos are close, but don't quite capture the tone of the color. It is even better in person and the coral is a clearer brighter coral then how it photoed. The silk is cut on the bias and that gives the dress beautiful movement. The skirt has been constructed using four full layers of the silk. This creates beautiful volume and movement as the layers float over each other. The bodice is cut with a simple scooped front and another scoop at the back that is cut lower for a little extra bit of skin to show. The waist is seamed for a touch of definition but is still loose and comfortable to wear. If you want to add more definition you can cinch it in with the sash. The matching little cape sits over the shoulders. It stays in place with little hooks behind the buttons and you can wear those to either the back or front. Wearing it with the cape adds a pretty flowing feel to the dress. There is also a matching sash that comes with it. The sash is very long and you could wear it a multitude of ways, at the waist, as a turban or even substituting it for the cape and wearing it around the neck. It is very pretty and fresh feeling. Excellent condition

It is lined in multiple layers of the same coral silk chiffon. The dress closes with a hidden set, back painted metal and nylon zipper. The cape is unlined and hooks to close under the decorative buttons. I see one extremely faint area of darkening to the fabric about mid thigh on one side. I could not get it on camera it is so faint. The volume of fabric efficiently hides it. The silk is all bias cut and the measurements reflect the range it will go

1970s John Kloss Red Nylon Jersey Asymmetrical Lingerie Dress

I Have A Question: 1970s John Kloss Red Nylon Jersey Asymmetrical Lingerie Dress

This John Kloss piece is not 100% perfect but is too pretty to not put out there. I know there are collectors of his work and I hope someone falls in love with it as is. This would have been originally intended to be worn as lingerie piece. However, the recent trend towards wearing items more sheer and layered over inner foundation garments makes piece like this far more suitable as outwear now. This one walks the edge, as far as how sheer it is. It def has a touch of sheerness in a strong light but you could use it as a cover up, be daring and wear nothing but a slip under it, or layer it over just about anything underneath to the point where you can walk outside. The nylon is of a good quality and weight. The fabric is a pinky red color that I think is better in person then how it photoed even though the color is very close in these shots. It slips over the head with pretty cap sleeves that just cover the tops of the shoulder. The neckline is scooped and dips very low. I love the way that it is gathered under just the one side of the bust. It is so subtle and such an unusual detailing. There are a scattering of pinhead size dots at the front and a couple of the same down the front that are barely noticeable. The fabric itself is strong and otherwise in excellent condition

Unlined and slips on. Tagged M. The fabric does have some stretch. Dots on the front as per above. Please see the photo after the label shot for the area affected the most

I Have A Question: Fall 1996-97 Yves Saint Laurent Burgundy Sequin Micro Mini Dress or Tunic

This Yves Saint Laurent piece is the later version of the black one I also listed today and it is just as fabulous. The color of the deep burgundy sequins is amazing. The color is very rich feeling the sequins bring it to life even more. Every square inch of the piece is finished with them. For this one the sequins are laid out flat and set side by side to cover the entire piece. Like its slightly older counterpart it too can play double duty. It is more of a short, mini dress length but can also be worn as a tunic. Either way you will be showing off a mile of leg. The neckline is slightly scooped and the shoulders themselves are lightly padded and squared off so you get a touch of structure. The sleeves are long and the body of the tunic dress is cut to skim over the body in an easy, relaxed way. The sequins are shimmer in the light and in person it is even better then how it photoed. I love the piped detailing that finishes each cuff, the neckline then runs down the back on either side of the zipper. It's fabulous. Excellent condition

Fully lined in a burgundy silk  crepe and closes with a zipper at the back. Light padding in each shoulder. Tagged a vintage YSL 40

Spring 2008 Balmain by Christophe Decarnin Sequin Silver Tunic or Micro Mini

I Have A Question: Spring 2008 Balmain by Christophe Decarnin Sequin Silver Tunic or Micro Mini

Christophe Decarnin headed Balmain from 2005 as a designer and was named the Creative Director for the brand shortly after. He remained there until 2011. He was largely responsible for revitalizing the couture house, turning the label into his own rick-chic vision, and bringing in a much needed younger clientele. This tunic is a runway piece shown for Spring 2008. It's twin was worn as a tunic for Look 31 in the show.

The tunic is pure Decarnin - it has the unexpected rock chic feel to it and you can easily see its influence with what we are now seeing on the runways. Every square inch of the piece is finished with little silver sequins. I love that they are not your typical round sequins either. Each is a bit of an abstract shape and they have been applied to the silk organza underneath with silver metal thread that is top stitched over them. This creates its own secondary texture and gives the sequins a more interesting effect. It is also a little extra special because it can potentially play double duty. It can absolutely be worn as a tunic but if you are brave and don't mind showing off a mile of leg it is probably just long enough to be worn as a micro mini depending on how it sits on you. Especially with the addition of a pair of tights underneath. The neckline is scooped and the shoulders are unstructured so that is sits loose and easy on the body. The sleeves are long and the body is cut to skim over the body in an easy, relaxed way. The sequins are a brilliant silver in person the way they shine and shimmer in the light is far better then how it photoed. It weighs almost nothing and it is a piece that perfectly sums up Decarnin's tenure at the brand. Excellent condition

The sequins are directly applied to a white silk organza and it slips on to wear with no closures. Tagged a 36

I Have A Question: 1980s Yves Saint Laurent Densely Covered Black Sequin Micro Mini or Tunic

I absplutely love this Yves Saint Laurent piece.  I just had a blue version of this come in the shop a few weeks black and was very happy to find this black one. for you. The sequins are glossy and a true deep ink black and they cover every square inch of the piece. It is also a little extra special because it can play double duty. It can absolutely be worn as a tunic but if you are brave and don't mind showing off a mile of leg it is just long enough to be worn as a micro mini. Especially with the addition of a pair of tights underneath. The neckline is slightly scooped and set wide across the neck which allows for a little bit of skin to show on the top of your shoulders. The shoulders themselves are lightly padded so you get a touch of structure. The sleeves are long and the body of the tunic dress is cut to skim over the body in an easy, relaxed way. I love the detailing around the cuff of each sleeve and the bottom hem. It creates the impression of a ribbed sweater but this is all actually done with hand placed tube beads. Excellent condition

I Have A Question: 1960s Emilio Pucci Pink Geometric Print Cotton Cover Up or Mini Dress

There is nothing like vintage Pucci and his cotton pieces that were meant for the beach are among my absolute favorites. This fabulous little cover up instantly makes you think of far off tropical luxury, combined with lazy days spent by the ocean, with umbrella topped drinks in hand. It is superbly simple in cut, allowing the beauty of that custom screened cotton to shine. The colors are pure and blissful pinks. He effortlessly mixes different hues of pink and then highlighted them with pops of white and grey. The angular pattern is all edged in fine black and signed throughout with that famous Pucci signature. It is made of a thicker twill weight cotton and buttons down the front with the buttons hidden under that front border. You can easily wear it on its own as a mini dress, or even layered over other pieces as more of a tunic. Excellent condition with a couple of very minor notes below

Unlined and closes at the front with hidden buttons under the front panel. There is a slight bit of fading near the arm, A teeny spot near the front hem and faint mark at the front. Please review the three photos after the label shot. These are all extremely minor. Tagged a vintage Pucci 12

I Have a Question

1960s Jean Louis Demi-Couture Silk Chiffon Dress w Caped Bodice

I Have A Question: 1960s Jean Louis Demi-Couture Silk Chiffon Dress w Caped Bodice

Jean Louis is the designer who created that dress that Marilyn Monroe was sewn into when she sang Happy Birthday to  President John F Kennedy. Louis worked in the movies heading the costume department at Columbia Pictures before starting his own label in 1961. Once he began designing under his own label he concentrated on suits and evening wear and was known for his beautiful fabric choices.

This is a wonderful example of that and the dress is very pretty and romantic. The combined effect of that feminine cut and gorgeous fabric will make you feel like you are floating into a room on a cloud of flowers. It is cut with a strong nod to those dramatic gowns of the 1930s and 1940s that Louis excelled at in his movie days. The bodice is fitted with an almost cape-like chiffon overlay that wraps all the way around the neck and over each shoulder to create a soft suggestion of sleeves. The neckline is cut wide and once on will sit on the very outer edge of the shoulders. The waist nips in to balance the volume above and below and the skirt flows out from there to the floor. The skirt has a wonderful fullness and volume to it and the choice of chiffon keeps it light as air. I absolutely love this dress. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a pink silk crepe with an additional layer of silk organza that backs the more full outer layer in the skirt. Closes with a hand set, back painted metal zipper and has a waist stay that closes with flat hook & eye. Hand finishes and made to demi-couture standards.

Bust: 18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 12" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 20" flat across from side seam to side seam
Bodice: 15" from neck to waist
Skirt: 42" from waist to hem

I Have a Question

1960s Arnold Scaasi Couture Peach Silk Organza Dress w Incredible Sleeves

I Have A Question: 1960s Arnold Scaasi Couture Peach Silk Organza Dress w Incredible Sleeves

Arnold Scaasi was born Arnold Isaacs in Montreal and the name Scassi is simply his own name reversed. He studied in Montreal and in Paris, apprenticed at the house of Paquin and then worked with the legendary Charles James. In 1964, he opened own couture salon. He dressed Hollywood stars like Lauren Bacall, Diahann Carroll and Elizabeth Taylor. He dressed several first ladies including Mamie Eisenhower, Hillary Clinton and both Bush first ladies. He even once bragged that he refused to give Jackie clothes for free. He was the man behind the scandalous 1969 Barbra Streisand sheer trouser outfit that she collected her Oscar in, and he was presented with the Council of Fashion Designers of America Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996. His mainline was made to couture standards and I am always happy to find his work.

Yards and yards of a peach silk organza have been used in this Arnold Scassi gown. The silk used is just incredible. It is a light weight, fine organza and then onto this are hundreds of little cotton pique shapes that have been individually applied.  The fabric he has chosen give the dress both lightness and fullness. That combined with the inner structure through the sleeves and built in skirting allow it to hold that stunning shape and silhouette that you see without having to add any additional underpinnings of your own. The bodice is fitted and cut to follow and highlight the curves of you body to just above the hip where the skirt then explodes out in all of that volume. I actually love how he has extended the bodice down and to the top of the hips while still defining the waist with that pretty grosgrain and silk belt. It cinches in the waist while still exaggerates the curves of the female form and giving you shape despite all the volume in the sleeves and the skirt. The skirt is wonderfully dramatic and full with inner built in layers of silk and tulle to hold the volume. The inner construction of the skirt is amazing. The very inner skirt is made from a fine peach silk with a broad band of horsehair taping inside the bottom hem. Between that and the outer layer of silk are four full layers of silk net tulle. The sleeves are equally incredible and are shaped to have that gorgeous fullness to them and also have an inner finished of tulle netting to hold the shape. The inside is exquisitely constructed and it is all hand finished. This would make a stunning wedding dress for someone who is not looking for a white dress. Excellent overall condition with a couple of minor notes to review below

The bodice is fully interlined in a fine peach silk. The skirt is finished in silk and tulle as per the description above. The sleeves are finished with tulle. It closes with a hand set back metal zipper. The belt is a silk grosgrain backed with a silk ribbon. It hooks and snaps into place. Finished to couture standard by hand. I see one small spot on one of the appliques to the side of the front waist. There is some slight grubbiness to some of the applique pieces near the hem. At some point a repair was done to the skirt at the back that is extremely well done and I only initially spotted it when steaming the skirt from the inside. There is a small repair and stress to the fabric at the top of one of the white piece near the sleeve on the top. Please review the photos after the label shot. I took two of the one on the top to show the areas up close and then where it is. The colour of the dress in person is a touch more vibrant then how it photoed.

Late 1960s Malcolm Starr Prettiest Huge Pastel Floral Print Silk Dress

I Have A Question: Late 1960s Malcolm Starr Prettiest Huge Pastel Floral Print Silk Dress

This beautiful and happy feeling dress is one of my favorites from the pieces of Malcolm Starr that I have had in the shop. It was designed by Elinor Simmons, who was a young designer that Malcolm brought in to the company to design a higher end line for him in 1965. She eventually left in 1972 which giving us a window within to date the dress. Everything about this dress suggest the late 1960s.

The silk fabric that the dress is made out of is very pretty and fresh feeling with huge flowers printed across its entire surface. The bodice skims over the torso with darling little capped sleeves and a high set, ribbon detailed waist line. The neck is detailed in a double band of the same black braiding used at the waist. This use of a bit of a darker color anchors the design beautifully and contrasts against the pastels colors of the silk. The skirt falls to the floor, gradually widening out as it nears the hem. I love the fullness that this creates. The silk used has a almost polished cotton finish to it but with a touch more texture. The fabric choice really holds the shape of the dress beautifully and the color is wonderful. I love that it has pockets hidden away at the inset seams that run down the front. It really is a lovely dress. Excellent condition with a note below to review

Fully lined in an ivory muslin through the skirt and an ivory silky rayon through the bodice. It closes with a painted back metal zipper. The hem of the skirt is finished with ribbon. Some grubbiness to the edge of the hem. It appears that the back was taken out at some point alongside the zipper. It could be left as is or easily taken in again to be smaller. I also see what looks to be maybe a faint touch of a pen mark near the zipper. Please review the last photo after the shot of the label. Otherwise it appears to have been worn very little.

Bust: 18.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 15.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 22.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Bodice: 12" from neck to top band at the waist with 2" to the bottom band
Skirt: 42" from bottom band at the waist to hem with 3" turned up under the hem

I Have a Question

1972 Bob Mackie Ray Aghayan Purple Jersey Dress w Macrame

I Have A Question: 1972 Bob Mackie Ray Aghayan Purple Jersey Dress w Macrame

I am listing three of these early Bob Mackie and Ray Aghayan dresses today and all are from the daughter of the original owner. All three have some degree of flaws to them but it was very important to my client to find new homes for these where they could be loved once again so all are priced very reasonably given the rarity of them. All are strong and wearable if you don't mind  that they are not 100% perfect. They are all from the early seventies and showcase the very beginning of Bob Mackie's career and this early collaboration that he had with Ray, who would end up being his life partner as well and was already an established, award winning costume designer in his own right. This label precedes Mackie's own label. Was very happy to have a follower send me links to the 1972 Sonny and Cher album included here that dated this one and shows Cher wearing a simialar one!

The dress is made out of a stretch silk jersey in a royal purple color that is a touch deeper and more vibrant in person then how it photoed here. I love the easy silhouette of the dress and how the front of the bodice has an elaborate and beautiful macrame detailing. This has been entirely done by hand and then hand applied to the dress. The front detailing is made an off white rope that is knotted into a thick braid and applied around the V neckline. It then falls from the base of the V into a dramatic cascade of long fringe knotted with wood beads. The  longest of the fringes go almost to the hem. This elaborate applique gives the simple cut of the dress an instant dose of high glamour. The fabric is cut on the bias and is insanely comfortable to wear so the contrast of that glamorous detailing paired with a comfortable dress is irresistible. This is an amazing piece for the collector and these early duo label examples are very rare as they were made in extremely limited quantities. This one is unlabeled and has some small flaws but is in overall great condition.

Unlined and closes with a hand set back painted metal zipper. The macrame was hand made as a separate piece and then hand applied. The stitching is easily seen on the back of the fabric. The color is a touch more vibrant in person. Unlabeled. My cleaners managed to lighten the one spot on the side of the dress and then there are some small areas of color change to the purple. The last three photos show these areas. Sold as is and as final sale.

Sleeves: 22"
Shoulders: 14"
Bust: 15-17" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 13-15" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 16-19" flat across from side seam to side seam

This label precedes Mackie's own label.

The dress is made out of a stretch silk jersey in a stunning coral peach color that is a bit more vibrant in person then how it photoed here. I love the one shoulder silhouette and how the front of the bodice has an elaborate and beautiful beaded Native American feeling bird. All of the bead work is done by hand and has been hand applied to the dress. It is made entirely of turquoise, coral and wood beads and then it is edged in round silver beads. The tail of the bird is a dramatic cascade of long beaded fringe that goes almost to the hem. This elaborate applique gives the simple cut of the dress an instant dose of high glamour and the bird itself is like wearing a huge piece of jewelry. The fabric is cut on the bias and is insanely comfortable to wear so the contrast of that glamorous detailing paired with a comfortable dress is irresistible. This is an amazing piece for the collector and these early duo label examples are very rare as they were made in extremely limited quantities. I have sold another example of this dress in a different color so was very familiar with this one. This one is unlabeled and has some small flaws but is in overall great condition.

Unlined and closes with a hand set, slightly offset back painted metal zipper. The bird was beaded as a separate piece and then hand applied. The stitching is easily seen on the back of the fabric. The color is a touch more vibrant in person. Unlabeled. My cleaners managed to lighten the spots that were on the dress and the one that are left are very light now. The last three photos show the worst of them. Sold as is and as final sale.

This label precedes Mackie's own label.

The dress is made out of a stretch silk jersey in a deep yellow color that photoed pretty bang on. I love the fitted silhouette of the dress and all that amazing sequin detailing. Running down the front are a series of different pieces of fruit that are all hand done using sequins, tiny tube beads and rhinestones. The dress is more fitted through the upper body and then flares out as it nears the hem. At the back there is a large cut out below the button and loop at the neck. This leaves a large expanse of bare skin across the back. And just above the butt is another cluster of strawberries for a little bit of a sassy finish. The fabric is cut on the bias and is insanely comfortable to wear so the contrast of that glamorous sequin detailing paired with a comfortable dress is irresistible. This is an amazing piece for the collector and these early duo label examples are very rare as they were made in extremely limited quantities. This one is labeled and does has some flaws but is otherwise in good condition.

fully lined in a white stretch nylon lined and closes with a hand set back painted metal zipper and button at the back neck. The sequin work is all done by hand and hand applied. My cleaners managed to lighten the spot s on it some but they are still present. All are mainly on the back of the dress so the front presents as near perfect and the back shows all the staining with just one light spot on the front near the side seam and some faint areas on the edge of each cuff as well. . The photos after the label show show these areas. Sold as is and as final sale.

Early 1980s Paco Rabanne White Dress w Gold Metal Loop Detailing

I Have A Question: Early 1980s Paco Rabanne White Dress w Gold Metal Loop Detailing

The early eighties are a time period often overlooked in the Paco Rabanne history but there are some lovely pieces that came out of this time period. This dress is definitely one of them. It is made from a white crepe and has a nod to the earlier mod shaped shift dresses that defined his career. The white of the fabric is still crisp and this contrasts perfectly against the rope and chain detailing that finishes the edge of the neckline, sleeves and hem. Building on his iconic chain link pieces, all of the edges of the dress are finished with a series of open gold toned metal grommets that are linked together with little silver circles of metal. A rope runs through the upper edges for a slight nod to a nautical feel. It is very chic and with the recent revival of the Rabanne house, it feels very modern. Excellent condition

Fully lined in a white silky satin rayon and closes at the back with a zipper.

I Have a Question

Spring 1981 Halston Couture Runway Hand Beaded Pastel Color Dress

I Have A Question: Spring 1981 Halston Couture Runway Hand Beaded Pastel Color Dress

In 1981 Haslton was still in full control of his brand. He had not yet signed the international licensing agreements (that was to happen in 1983) that would be the beginning of his downfall. In fact, at this point in the Halston history, he was at the top of his game and anyone who was anybody was wearing the Halston label. His prices were sky high and the work put into the pieces was impeccable.

The fabric for his beaded and sequin pieces were being made in India. Halston personally chose the fabrics and materials that were used for each piece of his main line collections. The 1981 collection was especially intricate and the majority of the runway garments were heavily beaded and/or sequinned. In the book Halston, An American Original, the twin of this dress is shown as it appeared on the runway for that season. It is interesting that he chose to show it belts belted with a sash so that the length is shorter. The dress is extraordinary and all of the bead work on it is completely done by hand. The beads are tightly spaced and all have been hand applied onto the fabric which you can clearly see on the back of the fabric. I love the pale mix of pastels colored beads that were used as it gives the dress a soft and pretty feel. The fabric that the beads have been applied to has just the slightest touch of transparently to it which I love. The silhouette is very simple with a scooped front and back and then it just gently widens out as it reached the hem. This makes it very easy to wear and very flattering on the body. Really a wonderful and rare example of his work during this time period. Excellent condition.

Unlined and has no closures. It slips over the head to wear so you have to be small enough to get it on without a opening. You could probably add a side zipper along the seam if needed. The bead work is completely hand done.

Bust: 17" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 16.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: to 19.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Length: 41.5" from top of shoulder to hem

1980s Yves Saint Laurent Plunging Wrap Halter Top w Extra Long Ties

I Have A Question: 1980s Yves Saint Laurent Plunging Wrap Halter Top w Extra Long Ties

This little YSL top is gorgeous and super sexy. It slips over the neck and then plunges down extremely low to the band at the front waist. The band is super wide and it extends into very long ties at the back. This gives you a ton of styling options as you can let the ties hang at the back, tie them into a bow or wrap them & tie it at the front for a super cinched in waist. The back is left completely bare. The fabric is a slinky crepe rayon so its very fluid. This is the top you can use with almost anything and go from full on evening glamour with a long maxi skirt, give it a forties feel with a pair of wide cut shorts, or keep it sexy and simple with jeans or a pencil skirt. It is amazing. Excellent condition

Made of a double layer of the same fabric. It slip over the neck and then you tie it as you wish. Tagged a YSL 38 but should fit a variety of sizes due to the open cut and design.

Bust: each halter measures approx 7.5" flat across its widest point
Waist: fully adjustable
Bodice: 12" from neck to seam under the bust
Band: 10" from seam under the bust to hem and the the ties extend and narrow as the reach their ends

Modern Sizing Equivalent: SML-LRG

Item# S890

I Have a Question

Spring 2012 Valentino Prettiest Strapless Cotton Lace Dress

I Have A Question: Spring 2012 Valentino Prettiest Strapless Cotton Lace Dress

This dress is from the Spring 2012 collection from the house of Valentino. During this time period both Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli were acting Creative Directors. On the runway there was a shorter strapless dress shown and a longer version with cap sleeves. For the stores they seemed to have combined the two looks into this strapless version with a longer skirt. Vogue's Nicole Phelps reviewed the collection and said in part:

"The designers turned out their best collection yet—one dress more seductively, calmly lovely than the next, many of them walking out on flat sandals or lace espadrilles that helped give the outing its fresh feel. "Fashion is a dream, and in this moment we need dreams," Piccioli said beforehand...The designers opened with short frocks in off-white or black in a cotton lace fabric that made them into everyday sort of propositions, or they inset lace into paper-thin leather for a halter dress and a snappy trench..."Beautiful" is the word we heard over and over as we left the show."

And beautiful the dress is. This is still once of my favorites collections from the modern Valentino and I was very pleased to get this example in the shop. These are the kind of pieces to buy now, treasure and know they will only increase in importance as time goes by. The dress is strapless with a built in lingerie weight stretch corset that gives you support. The waist is nipped in and has a leather cord that runs through it and adds some detailing and additional shape. The skirt falls from there and widens out as it nears the hem. It is finished with a wide ruffle that gives it some movement and extra volume. The fabric is lovely and is a cotton and nylon mix that has a artisanal feel to it. It has cut work areas running all through it and it back with an almost weightless cotton. It is stunning and looks to have never been worn. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a light cotton muslin and the bodice has an additional lingerie stretch, lightly boned foundation built in that closes with its own zipper. It closes with a hidden set side zipper. A leather tie runs through the waist. It is tagged a modern 42 but runs extremely small. Please check the measurements provided. It would best fit a 0-2. The detail shot of the cotton lace is the best color reference photo.

I Have a Question

1980s Jacqueline De Ribes Ivory Silk Satin Dress w Amazing Sleeves

I Have A Question: 1980s Jacqueline De Ribes Ivory Silk Satin Dress w Amazing Sleeves

This is a gorgeous silk dress that is not in perfect condition but presents very well and the flaw it does have either cannot be seen or could perhaps be hidden in some fashion. It is so well made - most of the inner construction is complete done by hand - and is a fabulous representation of her work, that I know there is someone out there that would bring it back to life. The dress has her signature long and lean lines and in this one that is combined with those dramatic sleeves and a inner foundation that shapes and molds the body. It is made of a high quality silk satin in the perfect shade of ivory. The bodice is fitted with a gentle V front and back and boning built into the interior for support and shape. The waist nips in and then the skirt flows to the floor in one stark column. A high slit at the back allows you to walk despite the lean cut of that skirt. The sleeves are the star of the show and each is an elaborately gathered a draped explosion of silk that gives both height and volume. It is gorgeous and extremely well made to demi-couture standards. Presents as excellent condition but please read the full condition notes below.

Fully lined in a hand set off-white silk and closes with a back zipper. Wide silk waist stay that hooks to close. Light boning through the bodice. All hand finishes and extremely well made. Some scuffing to the fabric here and there but nothing that jarring. There is the one mark on the front by the seam under the waist as photoed. There is discoloring under both arms as photoed. These are hidden by the sleeves completely once on. The fabric could be cut down to eliminate them. I see a small area inside the lining that has torn. The zipper fabric is green and is certainly a replacement made at some point. The color in person is a touch lighter ivory and creamier then how it photoed. It did not zip up fully on my dress form but of course it will on someone the proper size.

Bust: 16.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 12" flat across from side seam to side seam

1960s Nat Kaplan Silk Brocade Midi Dress w Elaborate Crystal Detailing

I Have A Question: 1960s Nat Kaplan Silk Brocade Midi Dress w Elaborate Crystal Detailing

Nat Kaplan was a dress manufacturer that opened in 1935 and produced well-made mid-range garments for about 50 years. They tended to use great fabrics and the pieces were finely tailored. Fit was paramount and they did not skimp on details to give their clients amazing value for their money.

This dress is beautiful and and very feminine feeling. The bodice is fitted with little cap sleeves. The waist is set high and is detailed with a pretty flat bow that is made from the same fabric as the dress. The skirt falls from there to a midi length. The fabric itself is wonderful and unusual. It is a lovely silk brocade that has a slightly raised flora design covering its surface. You can see a very subtle striped effet in the base silk. The is part of the fabric itself and these bands change rom the palest pink to the palest green. The pink, gold thread and green print is then woven though that. A gold metallic braiding details the sleeve edges and the neckline. There are little pink and clear rhinestones set into that and down the front there are also bug huge glass crystals for extra glamour. It is just lovely. Excellent condition with one small note below

Full lined though the bodice in an ivory silk satin. The sleeves and skirt have a silk interlining. It closes with a painted metal zipper at the back. I see a bit of grubbiness to the edge of the hem at the fold.

Shoulders: 13.5
Bust: 17.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 15" flat across from side seam to side seam

1980s Wayne Clark Pink Silk Plunging Neckline & Huge Pouf Sleeve Dress

I Have A Question: 1980s Wayne Clark Pink Silk Plunging Neckline & Huge Pouf Sleeve Dress

If you loved the recent trend towards big pouf sleeves and and that cut that was pure eighties glamour, then you will absolutely love this original 1980s dress. I think it's amazing It is made from a pink silk that has a secondary design woven through the silk and provides a bit of contrast between the finish of the two silk fibers. In person the pink is a truer pink hue then how it photoed and even better then what you see. It has padding in the shoulders so the shape is held perfectly and the front and back plunge into a deep V right to the banded waist. The waist is defined with a wide band of the same silk that is top stitched and quilted into horizontal rows. From under that wide band at the waist the skirt falls in a neat column to just past the knee. The sleeves are of course the star of the show on this dress and  each is cut into spectacular huge poufs. The volume you see is not from me stuffing them with anything either. They are cleverly finished on the interior so that is the effect they have when on. Love it from shoulder to hem  Excellent condition

Fully lined in a pink crepe chiffon. It closes with a back zipper and ties at the back of the neck. Each cuff buttons to close with two sparkly faceted pink crystal buttons. Padding in each shoulder, Tagged US6.

I Have a Question

1960s Stavropoulos Gold Embroidered Ivory Silk One Shoulder Dress & Coat

I Have A Question: 1960s Stavropoulos Gold Embroidered Ivory Silk One Shoulder Dress & Coat

George Stavropoulos was known for his evening wear and his signature looks focused on cut and fabric to convey the beauty of each piece. So when you buy a vintage Stavropoulos piece you are getting incredible value for your money. The only reason his work is not under the actual Haute Couture category is because he was not an official member of the association.

This came from the estate of a woman who was a personal friend of George Stavropoulos and the set was custom made for her. It is incredible and you are really getting two couture level garments that you can easily wear as a set or separately. Very fine, high end silk was used to create both pieces. The silk that was used is very fine tissue silk in the perfect ivory. It has a stunning metallic gold thread embroidered and woven directly into the silk that forms borders, panels and the scattered motifs that you see. All of these are placed to highlight the design and cut of each piece. As a result is has an exotic Indian sari feel to it that has been westernized to combine the two ideals perfectly. Pieces were still being made specifically for the Western market and designers like Stavropoulos were using the beautiful, traditional silks that were now available. The dress is cut with a single shoulder that is made from a panel of the gold that runs up the side of the dress. The bodice is fitted with a hidden more structured interior. The waist curves in and then the skirt falls under that mixing the cream and gold parts beautifully. The jacket is cut to be oversized with just past the elbow sleeves and a loose cut. It is full and has lots of volume.  It is so well made you could flip it inside out and wear it. I love the contrast between the volume of the coat with the fitted dress underneath. It is beautifully made and very light. Excellent condition with a couple of minor notes below

Both pieces are fully lined in an ivory tissue silk. The dress closes with a back, hand set painted metal zipper and the jacket has no closures. The interior of the bodice is shaped and boned. All hand finished throughout to demi-couture standards and beautifully made throughout. On the dress I see the tiniest ares of fraying along the top of the fold near the one shoulder panel. There is the slightest of yellowing to the silk on the other side but it really only shows in certain lights and barely even then. The gold thread used has real metal in it and this has tarnished slightly over the years. Please review the final four photos after the label shot. The coat is pristine. I will also include a matching scarf that is not photoed. It has hand rolled edges and measures 77" x 16"

I Have A Question: 2015 Alexa Chung for AG "The Pixie" Denim Snap Front Mini Dress

When Alexa Chung announced that she was doing a collaboration with AG Jeans, the fashion crowd immediately took notice. When the collection was released the pieces sold out worldwide. This little denim mini was the stand out piece from that capsule. The dress is in immaculate condition and appears to have never been worn. It is made from a stretch denim so is extremely comfortable to wear. It closes with a series of snaps down the front, each embossed with the "Alexa Chung for AG" circling around a little flower. That same signature flower is embroidered on one of the pockets at the bust. Both of the pockets at the front also close with that same silver press snaps as do each cuff. Its a very easy to wear and flattering dress and the fact that it completely opens lets it play double duty as a layering piece. Excellent condition

Unlined ad close with the snaps at the front as seen. Snaps on each pocket and each cuff. Tagged a brand size large. The fabric has some give and stretch. As new condition

Resort 2012 Yves Saint Laurent Tie Front Blue Print Crepe Dress

I Have A Question: Resort 2012 Yves Saint Laurent Tie Front Blue Print Crepe Dress

From 2004 until 2012, Stefano Pilati was the head designer of Yves Saint Laurent for 8 years. He did two more collections after the Resort 2012 one. Vogue said of this collection that Pilati had succumbed to the call of the sea for resiort sending "out a cruise collection that was as croisière as it gets, complete with lanyard necklaces, rope-print dresses, and sailor jackets and pants. Afterward, the designer pointed out that Yves Saint Laurent did a nautical collection of his own around 1982. "He showed it with sheer stockings and pumps, and I loved the 'why not?' factor," Pilati said" This dress was Look 23 of the collection and one of the ones that had a definitive nod to the original YSL archives in its lines.

The dress is ain a pretty crepe fabric that has a blue floral print covering it. It has the feel of Yves infamous 'Scandal collection of 1971 in its cut that has a string nod to the forties. The sleeves are capped and gathered along a bad that runs down their tops before buttoning in a cuff detail. The front plunges quite low and ties in two places along that plunge. There is actually a double panel of fabric that extends out from each side to make those ties which is unusual and gives a bit thicker knot for coverage. The bust and waist just skim over the body with no seaming present until you hit the low ruffle of the skirt. This low set skirt has volume so that when you move it moves and gives the dress its flirty feel. Excellent condition.

Unlined and closes with a hidden set side zipper. Ties at the front and each sleeve has a button to close. Tagged a YSL FR40 but cut generously for that sizing.

Spring 2006 Marni Blue & Grey Cotton Print Baby Doll Mini Dress

I Have A Question: Spring 2006 Marni Blue & Grey Cotton Print Baby Doll Mini Dress

This darling little dress is from the days when founder Consuelo Castiglioni was the head of the company still and acting Creative Director. The brand launched in 1994 and quickly became known for it innovative prints and the way she mixed and matched colors. This is classic Marni from this time period. The print was featured on the runway in two looks and then for production to the stores they utilized the fabric in this dress as well. It is one of her very easy to wear smock pieces with sleeves that run just past the elbow and a bodice set above a high waist. The collar is neat and pointed and this tops a plunge that runs right to the seam under the bust. There is a bit of a curved yoke at the front and the back as well as a few well placed knife pleats for volume and detail. The dress falls in a loose baby doll, smock feel around and below that. It is very easy to wear and travel with and is a great example of her work during this time period. Plus it has pockets. Excellent condition

Unlined and slips on to wear. Buttons at each cuff and pockets along the side seams. Tagged a 38

Sleeves: 18"
Slightly dropped shoulders: 15.5"

I Have a Question

1970s Lillie Rubin Tie Dye Silk Dress w Low Back and Halter Front

I Have A Question: 1970s Lillie Rubin Tie Dye Silk Dress w Low Back and Halter Front

The Lillie Rubin label was actually a chain of boutiques that sold mainly evening wear and carried other labels as well. Pieces often had both the Lillie Rubin shop label and the designer label. This dress has only its Lillie Rubin label but I have always wondered if it was perhaps a Halston. I have never been able to verify that. If it is not I think it was definitely inspired by the tie dye work that Halston was doing during this time period. I added a reference photo of a verified Halston tie dye caftan that was done in a similar color way to this dress. If this dress could be verified as one of his pieces then this is extremely good value for the person who buys it.

This dress is gorgeous. It is made out a light silk crepe that has been tie dyed for the prettiest effect. At the front two wide triangle panels are set into the low waist so that the cross over for coverage at the front and then tie behind the neck with skinny little silk straps. This leaves the back almost completely bare and it plunges right to the waist seam. The skirt flows to the floor under that in a double layer of the same silk. The waist is dropped and has elastic through it for an easy fit. It comes with a cleverly cut looped shawl piece that you can slip your arms though and it is sort of like a soft, loose half jacket. You could style this a number of ways. It is very pretty and an amazing set. Excellent condition

The bodice is unlined and slightly transparent, the skirt is a double layer of the fabric. It slips on the wear with elastic though the waist that is loose and easy set. The shawl has no closures, will fit any size and slip on

Bust: approx 17" across the front with open sides

Skirt: 42" from dropped waist to hem

Recent Rochas Red Silk Backless Dress w Ruffle Detail at Low Back

I Have A Question: Recent Rochas Red Silk Backless Dress w Ruffle Detail at Low Back

This lovely Rochas dress still has its tags attached and is that perfect dress for when you want full impact mixed with a touch of feminine prettiness. It is made of a silk crepe de chine in a beautiful shade of red. This fabric choice gives it lightness but allows it to drape over the body and have a pretty flow to it. It is suspended from the shoulder by tiny little silk straps that meet the bodice at the front and cross over and hold the low dip at the back. There is a little gather at the bust and the seam curves up to meet that for a pretty line. The dress flows out from there to the floor, gradually widening as it goes. At the back, it dips very low and then again flows to the floor. This leave the upper part of you more bare but is very flattering in the way it skims over the body under that. Below this is a double row of ruffles made from the same fabric. I love that this gives a nod to the historical bustle but in a very fresh and modern way. It is cut super model long and the lightness of the silk gives it beautiful movement. Excellent condition with a note below

Unlined and closes with a hidden set zipper at the side. There is a smudge near the seam on one side of the bust and some grubbiness along the hem at the front mainly. It was new with tags so was not cleaned and I am sure these will come out for be so faint it won't matter. In person, the color is a little more a muted red then how it photoed. Tagged a modern 40

Bust: approx 15 " flat across the front with open sides

I Have a Question

1950s Suzy Perette Black & Red Diamond Pattern Full Skirt Dress

I Have A Question: 1950s Suzy Perette Black & Red Diamond Pattern Full Skirt Dress

There never was an actual 'Suzy' behind the Suzy Perette label. Rather, the company that created the line relied heavily on the designs coming out of Paris and the interpretations of the Couture looks, in particular Dior's 'New Look'. Designs were interpreted and done in-house and the result was well-made, beautifully executed pieces.

This example is made of a light weight silk that has a slight 'raw texture to it. Onto the black base there is the most incredible graphic diamond check pattern in a vivid red that covers the entire dress. The pattern is over-sized and makes a wonderful statement. I have not found a really great Perette dress in ages and am so pleased to have such a fine example of her work in the shop today. It has such pretty lines that you can't help but swoon at the sight of it. The top has an easy cut with a wide cut neck at the front, a V cut at the back and capped sleeves. It nips in at the waist and then the skirt flares out under that lots of fabric in it. I styled it over a very light crinoline so you could get an idea of the fullness. It could be worn over an even fuller crinoline if you wanted it to be more dramatic. The skirt is set into the waist with a series of perfectly spaced, crisp pleats at the top that open out to give the volume you sees. The colors are lovely, the fabric of very good quality and the lines and cut are wonderful. Excellent condition

Fully lined with a black silky rayon through the bodice and the skirt is unlined. It closes with a back painted metal zipper.

Early 2000s Christian Dior by John Galliano Red Silk Satin Bias Cut Dress

I Have A Question: Early 2000s Christian Dior by John Galliano Red Silk Satin Bias Cut Dress

During John Galliano's years at the house of Christian Dior he arguably produced some of the most amazing bias cut gowns in the houses history. His work, especially the bias cut pieces that he did, have a feeling of the decadence and abandonment of the twenties and they are beautifully cut. They marry Old Hollywood with the minimalist spirit of the nineties and early 2000s and the results are stunning. This dress is made from a deep red silk satin that is cut completely on the bias. It is very beautiful. The bias cut allows it to skim and drape over the body so that is shows every curve but is not tight at all. The neckline has a deep plunge at the front and the back. It follows the curves of the body under that and flares out after the hips. The skirt is remarkable and cut to hang in long points on either side while it draws upwards at the middle. This, combined with the bias fabric, allows the dress to move around you to create a beautiful sense of movement. A tightly spaced row of buttons runs down the side of the dress - a signature of his and this adds to the sense of antiquity to the gown. It is stunning on. Excellent condition

Unlined and cut on the bias. It is made form a silk satin. It slips on to wear and closes with the series of buttons and fabric loops that run down the side. The bias cut will allow for a variety of sizes to wear the dress. Note the length does come up when on depending on the size of the girl underneath since it is cut on the bias.

Bust: 15-18" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 13-15" flat across from side seam to side seam

1960s Valentina Inc Pink Beaded Shift Dress w Front Collar Detailing

I Have A Question: 1960s Valentina Inc Pink Beaded Shift Dress w Front Collar Detailing

The Valentino Inc company is not to be confused with the couture Valentina line. This company was making ready to wear in the 1960s and 1970s and was a great and reasonable priced line. They had their fabric hand beaded in Hong Kong and then the garments were made from that. The quality was very good and they were known for their beaded and sequin dresses. This is one of their most well know styles and it is still quite fabulous. it is an interesting example of layering tor create depth and texture. The beaded chiffon sits over an inner lace layer and then the body of the dress is backed in a opaque ink fabric. The sleeves are left with just the lace and chiffon and the collar and cuffs are backed in a printed fabric for an even more opaque effect then the body of the dress. It is cut ion a simple shift shape that was all the rage at the tome. The sleeves are long and each ends in an elaborately beaded cuff. The collar has that same elaborate beading to its long points. A band of the heavier beading runs down the top part of the front. It's gorgeous. Excellent overall condition with a note about the interior below

Fully lined through the body in a cram silk and closes with a back painted metal zipper. Each cuff closes with hidden snaps. the bead work is all hand done. On the interior fabric there is discoloration all through the upper bodice and under the arms. None of it shows through but it has been priced accordingly. If this bothered you you could have it relined and the issue would be eliminated.

I Have A Question: 1960s Unlabeled Norman Norell Creamy Ivory Silk Knife Pleat Dress

This wonderful little dress had a label when I acquired it many years ago but has lost it along the way somehow. It is not perfect which is why I have had it tucked away all this time. However, it is too pretty to not give it a chance at a second life and if you are creative and can find a way to restore it, or are just OK to wear something not perfect that this is an incredible high quality dress for the price point. The dress is made out of a very high quality silk and the entire thing has been meticulously knife pleated. The bodice has a deep V at both the front and back and even the side panels that wrap around the bust under this and show on each side have been pleated. The bodice panels go down and into a wide band at the waist where the pleats have been places the other way for a bit of visual impact. Below that the pleated skirt flares out with lots of movement. It is gorgeous but make sore to review the photos and read the full description below.

Unlined and closes with a side set painted metal zipper. Hand finishes throughout to demi-couture standards. The fabric itself is strong and sturdy and has no issues but there is a spot on one side of the bodice and there are also watermarks that run up along the skirt. Please review the last two photos.

Bust: 17" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 13" flat across from side seam to side seam

1950s Adele Simpson Pink Cotton Dress w Hand Applique Cording Detail

I Have A Question: 1950s Adele Simpson Pink Cotton Dress w Hand Applique Cording Detail

This Adele Simpson dress is rather exceptional. It is made out of a pale pink cotton that in person is an even prettier shade of pink then how the camera captured it. It is sleeveless and the neckline is scooped at both the front and back of the dress. The waist nips in just below the bust line and then the skirt flares out from there and is very full. I have shows in styled over a light crinoline and you can just as easily wear it without one and get more movement, or even wear one that is more full then the one I used and get a real 'cupcake' effect. Over the dress is a piped and puffed pink cording made in the same fabric. This is all hand applied in the wonderful curving abstract design that you see covering the dress. This gives it lots of texture and detailing. It would work for day or evening. These earlier dresses are getting so hard to find and this one is quite exceptional and a wonderful example of her early work. Excellent condition

The bodice is lined with the same pink cotton and the rest of the dress is unlined. It closes with an inset side metal zipper. Hand finished throughout. Styled with a light crinoline underneath that is not included. Note that in person the pink is a more pastel baby pink

1990s Christian Dior Chic Black Sheath Dress w Pleated Cape Overley

I Have A Question: 1990s Christian Dior Chic Black Sheath Dress w Pleated Cape Overley

This is a beautiful black dress from the Christian Dior label that showcases the restraint and elegance that the best of the brand's work has always displayed. The main dress under the cape is cut in one long and lean line. This simple sheath silhouette make it feel even longer then it already is. Everything about the cut is done to lengthen the girl wearing it and give her one long and beautiful line. The inner dress has no true sleeves, instead there is a pleated overlay that is attached around the neckline and falls over the dress. There are slits open along the sides that you can slip your arm through. I am going to post some shots of this dress on my Instagram feed that will show the dress worn as shown on the dress form, belted and with my arms fully inside the overlay. Each way gives the dress a very distinctive look and feel. The panels are pleated and made of a light fine silk. This gives it a lot of movement as you move underneath. I love that the hem of the overlay is set along an angle that curves up at the center front down at the sides and back. The body of the dress follows the body underneath in a way that the fabric just skims over you from shoulder to hem. The skirt falls from there to the floor in a column with a back slit to give you ease of walking and flash a little leg. It is simple and refined and has not a single unnecessary seam. Excellent condition

Fully lined in a black silk and closes with a zipper at the back. Appears to have never been worn, or worn very little. Hand finishes. If you prefer to wear the top as a true cape over the arms, you could add hidden hooks or snaps to close the arm slits to make it more versatile. Tagged a US12, FR44

1990s Moschino Love Me Baby Red Heart on Black Net Lingerie Dress

I Have A Question: 1990s Moschino Love Me Baby Red Heart on Black Net Lingerie Dress

That sense of humour and drama is what defined the very best pieces from Moschino. The label had the ability to provoke and challenge all while making exceptional pieces of clothing. Francis Moschino launched his label in 1983 and quickly from a regional designer to one that was known on the international stage.

This dress is from the lingerie line abut still has that quirky sense of humor that is immediately evident. Over the bust area we see that enormous red satin heart that has the words 'Me Baby' embroidered onto it in their signature gold lettering. It is of course meant to be read as 'Love Me Baby'. The heart is edged in a ruffled netting like a Valentines box of chocolates and the top of the heart forms the sweetheart neckline. The sleeves are capped and the dress is see-though for the entire rest of the dress. It is made out of a black netting that molds to your curves before  widening out as it reaches the hem. You could easily wear something under this to make it wearable as a proper dress. It is an amazing piece of the Moschino history. Excellent condition

Unlined and the netting is very fine and is see through. Slips on to wear. Tagged a brand size. The netting does have some stretch
