Spring 1971 Oscar de la Renta Red Printed Dress w Pouf Sleeves & Original Belt

The Oscar de La Renta boutique label first appeared in 1967 which makes this one from one of the very earliest collection for this line. His boutique label was the first secondary ready-to-wear line for a Seventh Avenue designer. The print on this dress is the same used in several variations from the 1971 Spring collection.

The dress is so fresh and romantic in feel. The fabric feels like a cotton mix and this gives the red is a soft feel. It is printed with tiny geometric symbols and these are done in a combination of yellow, white and black. I love how the print is placed over the dress to highlight the various components and the cut of the design. This takes extra fabric and a lot of pre-planning to do and shows you the commitment to quality during this time period even for the boutique line. The neck and back are sopped and cut wide almost to each shoulder. A row of tightly spaced buttons and loops run down the front as decoration. The waist nips in and it has its original belt in a matching pattern that pace at the front with a thick cotton cording. The skirt falls to the ground from there and has some fullness to it. It gently widens out as it nears the hem. The sleeves are spectacular. Each is cut so that the lower half of the sleeve poufs out dramatically over the cuffs. I have pushed them up a bit as they are meant to be worn like that to full show off and exaggerate their volume. Excellent condition.

Lined through the bodice with a cotton muslin and the skirt is unlined. It closes with a back metal and nylon zipper. Each cuff snaps to close with hidden set, fabric covered snaps. The belt closes by lacing the cotton cord that you see through the grommets at each end of the belt.
