The almost identical ensemble to this one was recently featured in the exhibit Yves Saint Laurent + Halston: Fashioning the 70s and is featured in the accompanying book for the exhibit giving us a firm date and making it well documented.
This beautiful Yves Saint Laurent set dates to the time period of Yves famous 1976-77 Russian collection and showcases the care and attention to detail that he put into his work. The first thing to note on this set is the fabric. It is not the synthetic fabric you so often find during this time period but the real metallic fiber lame mixed with silk that you usually see in the 1920s. It is in fact, according to the label, a mix of 56% metal and 44%silk. A very unusual choice for this time period and one that would have been very costly to produce. It is two separate pieces, which gives the set endless styling potential as they can be worn together or mixed in with other pieces from your wardrobe. The color is a deep gold and in person it is a deep richer tone that how it photoed and more of a true, deep gold. The skirt is quite full and is set into the waist with a series of soft pleats to help give it that volume you see. I love that there are pockets hidden along the seams of the hip and the movement it has when you move. The top is unlined so has just the tiniest bit of semi sheerness to it. This combined with a loose and easy cut are a signature Yves nod to sexiness. The top slip over the head and drapes perfectly in place. This allows it yo highlight everything while showing nothing - it is genius. The sleeves are incredible - each is very full above the buttoned cuff so they puff out fantastically. Both the neckline and cuffs are finished in a metal thread, gold braid and the buttons are high dome gold buttons made of coiled gold piping. Excellent condition.
The skirt is fully lined a black silk and the top is unlined. The skirt closes at the side with a painted zipper and flat hook and eye at the waist. The top slips on and has a button and loop at the neck and also on each cuff. The the skirt is agged a size 38 and the top unlabeled.
