This gown epitomizes the opulence and decadence of the eighties and is also an amazingly constructed piece! Oscar De La Renta pulled out the stops in the creation of this piece. Made of a self patterned silk brocade in three tones of jeweled colors in a beautiful combination of a deep raspberry, a royal purple and a luxe emerald green. The bodice that sits between and separates these three colors is completely an fully beaded and covered with gold metallic thread. It acts almost like a plate of armour but is supple and easy to move in. Onto the metallic thread are chenille florets, sequins and bead work - all hand done. The skirt is very full and has underskirts set to keep the full shape. Each shoulder is dramatic and bold with netting hand sewn into place to create and hold the fullness. The sleeves are cut leg of mutton style giving the gown a Renaissance feel. It is beautifully made and wonderfully extravagant! Excellent condition.
Shoulders: 14"
Sleeves: 26"
Bust: approx 16" flat across but there are no true side seams because of the cut of the arms
Waist: 13" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: open
Bodice: 13" from neck to top of waist band
Band: 5"
Skirt: 39" from bottom of the waist band to hem
The top is fully lined in a purple silk and the skirt is lined in a green silk organza with an additional silk skirt inside. This inner skirt finishes with a ruffled hem that has a 3" panel of horse hair dressmakers tape to give it some weight and structure. The sleeves are lines in a silk organza with nylon netting at the top of each shoulder to help achieve the fullness you see. It closes at the back with a hidden zipper and hook & eye at the top of the neck. Each sleeve closes with a hidden set zipper and has a row of tightly spaced fabric covered decorative buttons. Some of the braiding edging detailing has come loose here and there - I have gone over it but I mention this in case I missed a stitch or two.

Spring 1999 Oscar de la Renta Strapless Silk Taffeta Dress w Elaborate Back Skirt
I Have a Question
For the Spring 1999 collection Oscar did a series of separates and dresses that featured these dramatic trained silk taffeta skirts. There were several variations shown on the runway and I have included some of those here. Ashley Judd wore a red sleeved version of the dress to the VH1 Divas Live event. She then changed and wore the skirt and jacket version to the after party at the Beacon Theatre in New York. The Met Museum holds a piece from this collection in their permanent archives too. This strapless dress version is spectacular and if it is a piece with drama that you are after - this is it.
This Oscar de la Renta piece is so striking and it has all the drama that I love to find when I look for vintage. The dress is made out of a silk taffeta and the colour of the silk changes slightly in different lights. In most it seems to be a deep midnight blue but in certain light it has a more purple tone. The bodice is strapless and is constructed from a series of silk covered boning placed vertically side by side all the way around you. Each boning is placed at exactly the same space away from the next one and this technique creates incredible texture. Inside the bodice it has built in cups and a small amount of padding for support. It nips in at the waist and then the skirt falls to the floor and beyond. The skirt is cut to skim over the hips and is shaped to exaggerate the curve of the hips. It them narrows in towards the floor. At the back it gathered in and up to the back of the mid thigh. The edge of the hem is detailed with a jagged edging. Where it is gathered up and into the back of the skirt these create their own fabulous design as they fall from the back of the skirt. The skirt then extends out into a sweeping curve of fabric to create a train behind you. It is extraordinary. My photos do not do it full justice and it really needs an actual body to bring it to life. Excellent condition
The bodice is fully lined in a black silk organza, The inner bodice is boned all the way around. The dress closes with two zippers, one that closes the interior and a second that closes the exterior. Slight padding in each cup. Tagged a vintage 12

Fabulous Fall 2015 Oscar de la Renta Runway Look 51 Black & White Strapless Dress
I Have a Question
The exact twin of this dress, with an optional belt at the waist, was shown on the Fall runway in 2015 for Look 51. In Vogue's review of the collection journalist Nicole Phelps noted the new guard that the brand was under that season saying; 'Tonight was the night. Peter Copping, Oscar de la Renta's handpicked successor, made his runway debut....De la Renta and Copping were to have worked side by side, but de la Renta's death, just days after Copping was appointed last October, prevented that. Copping left a type-written note on each seat: "I am immensely proud to have been chosen as the creative director of Oscar de la Renta," he began. "Unfortunately things did not go according to our plans and I never had the chance to work with Oscar, which is something I deeply regret." ... Copping had just three months to put together the collection, significantly less time than he's used to. Those challenges aside, he did a fine job honoring de la Renta and the house that he has inherited.' This is one of the final gowns of the show and is utterly beautiful. We of course know that staying at ODLR was not in the cards for Peter but it is still always a good thing to have a piece from a debut collection and a piece of a brand's history and legacy.
This Oscar de la Renta dress is stunning. It is red carpet worthy and would even make an amazing wedding piece for the bride looking for a non-traditional choice or as an alternative dress in a more extended wedding celebration. It is in fabulous condition and has never been worn. It still has its original hang tag attached even. The dress builds on Oscar's legacy and stays true to the houses aesthetic. It combines an open lace bodice that tops a silk chiffon skirt. The bodice is cut to be very fitted to the body from the top of the strapless neckline to where it ends under the hips. The bust is strapless and fitted. It is cut to dip down a touch at the back. The upper back is left bare. It tightly hugs the body, curving in at the waist, and then skims your hips. The seaming to create that beautiful shape is all hidden and this shape gives the the dress a sense of added length. It is made from a black crocheted feeling lace that is done in a floral pattern. This lies over a white silk base so that the pattern of the flowers absolutely pops. The silk under the lace has the texture of a grosgrain ribbon and this adds a touch more depth. It has a full built in boned corset inside the bodice so you don't have to worry about additional underpinnings. There are also full built in underskirts for the low set skirt that sits under the elongated bodice. The skirt flows directly out from the bottom of the bodice and has an insane amount of volume. There is a wide inner band of stiffened netting that circles the hem to help hold the skirt up and keep the shape. It is made out of silk tulle, a silk organza and then bands of a floral ribbon lace are worked in vertically. These are all pieced and sewn together in vertical rows that give it all of that volume that you see. There is a band of black velvet that details where the skirt and bodice meets and this falls in long ties at the back topped with a bow. It is just heavy enough to hold the shape and structure of the dress but even with all of that fabric it is not so heavy that it is uncomfortable to wear. The movement of the skirt when you walk is incredible and you can see in the runway video we have added for reference just how amazing it is on. For the runway they styled it with a thin pink belt for a pop of colour. You could easily emulate this at home with any colour you wish or just wear it on its own and keep it simple and easy. It is a beautiful dress. Excellent condition.
There is a full built in cupped corset that closes with its own zipper and then the dress closes over that with a back hidden set zipper. The rest of the bodice is lined in an ivory silk taffeta. Inner net and tulle skirting are finished with a wide band of stiffened netting. There is an inner silk layer with a stiffened hem and then a tulle and silk layer over that and between the outer silk. Tagged an ODLR 8. This has never been worn and still has its original hang tag.

Late 1960s Oscar de la Renta Deep Brown Flat Velvet & Brocade Dress w Slit Sleeves & Lace Belt
I Have a Question
The Oscar de La Renta boutique label first appeared in 1967 which makes this dress from one of his very earliest collections for this line. His boutique label is important as is marked the first ready-to-wear line for a Seventh Avenue designer to be launched. These early pieces have lots of hand finishes and are just stunning example of his work during these early days of his career.
I love this dress. It is made out of a gorgeous deep brown velvet that gives it a really beautiful texture. The velvet has a flat pile and there is a bit of a vertical texture worked into it that helps add length when you have it on. It is a really stunning detail. To contrast this and give the dress a touch of a metallic feel Oscar then added a wide silver and gold metal thread panel of ribbon to follow the notched neckline. This panel of fabric runs down each side of the neckline and then circles around the collar. That same metallic fabric is used to cover the edges of the matching belt. The belt is fabulous in its own right. It is cut wide and then peaks where it meets in the middle. To close it, it has a long matching velvet tie that loops through the brass coloured grommets and then laces up as tight as you wish. The fabric of the dress is light in weight so that the dress is very easy to wear. It has long sleeves and each sleeve poufs out over the cuff. The cuffs are done in the same metallic fabric to pick up on the belt and neckline. Each is also slit down the sides so you see part of your arm. Very unusual and very chic once on. The skirt cascades to the floor gently widening out as it nears the hem. And it has pockets. It is really a gorgeous dress and very well made. Excellent condition with a minor note below.
Fully lined in a brown silky rayon. Closes with a back zipper and a hook at the top of the neck. Each cuff snaps to close. The inner back of the belt has stiffened a bit and it was stored folded. This does not effect the front at all but you see the fold lines on the back.

Stunning Spring 1999 Oscar de la Renta Lace Runway Cut Lace Top & Golden Silk Skirt Set
I Have a Question
This set is coming from the estate of a woman who was personal friends with Oscar and she bought some of his most beautiful pieces. For the Spring 1999 collection Oscar did a series of dresses and sets that used these dramatic trained silk taffeta skirts. It was shown in several variations on the runway including the twin of the one I have here today. I also have a strapless dress version from this collection in the shop at the moment and it is as equally beautiful (find that here). Ashley Judd wore a red sleeved version of the dress to the VH1 Divas Live event. She then changed and wore the skirt and jacket version to the after party at the Beacon Theatre in New York. The Met Museum also holds a piece from this collection and I could not be happier to have this one in the shop. It is gorgeous.
This Oscar de la Renta set is wonderful and has all the drama we love to find with vintage pieces. I love that you can mix and match the two pieces with other things in your wardrobe to extend the life of each. The top is stunning. It is made from an open cut work ivory lace and only a part of the front panels are lined with a nude silk chiffon. The entire back, upper bodice and sleeves are unlined so you clearly see skin through the open parts of the fabric. It has a pointed collar set high back on the neck and then it plunges right to the waist at the front just like how it was presented on the runway. I have tucked it in like they did on the runway but also took a couple of shots of it untucked so that you can see how beautifully it is finished along the bottom. You could easily wear it as a light jacket over something. Each sleeve is full and poufs out above the ruffled cuff. It tucks into the skirt which is made out of a fine silk taffeta. The colour of the skirt is this interesting hue that is between a pastel yellow and a gold. The silk has a slight iridescent quality to it and this causes it to change slightly in different lights and gives it a bit of a metallic feel. The design is very unusual and was a key component to this collection. The skirt nips in at the waist and is cut to hug and follow the curve of the hip and then it wraps in towards the ankles. At the back it is all gathered in to the mid thigh and held in place with a large flower feeling detail that sits up and off of the skirt. The hem is then detailed with overlapping pointed cut outs that are made out of the of the same silk and individually applied all the way around the hem. The back is cut into a sweeping curve of fabric that creates a train behind you. It is extraordinary. Excellent condition with a couple of small notes below
The bodice is part lined in a nude silk chiffon at the front. It closes with snaps and each cuff has elastic above the ruffle. The skirt closes with a hidden set zipper and is unlined. The top is tagged a vintage 4 and the skirt a 6. There are some minor marks on the skirt in two places and some on the edge of the cuffs. Please see the shots after the label shot

Gorgeous Fall 2006 Oscar de la Renta Runway Look 61 Strapless Dress in a Teal Blue Silk Brocade
I Have a Question
The exact twin of this dress was shown on the Fall runway for 2006 for Look 61. 2006 was an important year in Oscar's history. This is the same year that Parsons awarded him with the Lifetime Achievement Award at their 58th Annual Benefit and Fashion Show. In Vogue's review of the collection journalist Nicole Phelps said in part; 'While other designers flit from one influence to another, Oscar de la Renta has made a four-decade-long career of staying true to his brand of ladylike elegance'. On the runway the dress was worn by model Liya Kebede and it was styled with maximum simplicity. It was just Liya in all her beauty and this stunning gown. Her makeup was barely there and they did not even add an earring to detract from her beauty or the beauty of the dress. It was a stunning moment and I am happy to have the runway clip included here so that you can see just how beautifully the dress moves.
This Oscar de la Renta dress is stunning. It is red carpet worthy and would even make an amazing wedding piece for the bride looking for a non-traditional choice or as an alternative dress in a more extended wedding celebration. It is in fabulous condition. It is coming from the same estate of a woman I am just starting to go through who was personal friends with Oscar and she bought some of his most beautiful pieces. The dress is made from yards and yards of a black silk brocade that has a vivid teal blue pattern woven through the fabric. The silk he chose is just incredible. It has a black base with beautiful motifs woven through the silk. They become a design element in themselves. The silk is just heavy enough to hold the shape and structure of the dress but even with all of that fabric it is not so heavy that it is uncomfortable to wear. It has a full built in boned corset inside the bodice so you don't have to worry about additional underpinnings. I did add a crinoline to the dress for some of these photos so that you can get an idea of just how full the skirt is and see its full shape. I also photoed it without a crinoline so that you can see how it falls on its own. The bust is strapless and fitted with high peaks on each side of the bodice. They curve toward the centre with a scalloped pattern at the edge. It hugs the body, curving in at the waist, and then hugs over the top of your hips. The seaming is all done on the vertical to create that beautiful shape and give the the dress a sense of added length. It is cut to follow and highlight the curves of your body to below the hip. At each hip there is a panel of fabric added to create a fantastic curved ruffle. This acts like a modern day pannier and is quite a beautiful detail. The skirt flows directly out from the bodice with no seam at the waist to break the line. It is cut to sit slightly more sleek and flat at the front and then you have all that wonderful volume starting at each hip and going around to the back. The back of the dress is very dramatic. It is trained so that it flows out behind you in a dramatic swoop of fabric. There is a wide inner band of stiffened netting that circles the hem to help hold the skirt up and keep the shape rather then have it just drag behind you. The upper back is left bare and it is just impossibly wonderful. Those details combined with that spectacular colour make it one of the best gowns I have seen from this time period. It is a stunning example of Oscar's work. Excellent condition.
Unlined with ribbon finished seams. There is a full built in corset that closes with its own zipper and then the dress closes over that with a hidden set zipper. A wide band of stiffened netting finishes the hem as mentioned above. There is an inner grosgrain waist stay that hooks to close. I see a break in the silk that covers the interior netting at the hem but it is inside the dress so does not show at all. Tagged a size 2.
