This is a fabulous silk Sonia Rykiel set that is very chic and French feeling. It has so much charm to it and the dress form it is on is not really doing it justice. This is the kind of piece that someone fabulous is going to buy and the instant you see it on you will be kicking yourself that you did not buy it for yourself. This would be from the days that Sonia herself was designing for the label. This is an earlier piece that would have been designed shortly after she launched her label in 1968 or a few years after that.

The silk is a very light and fine scarf weight and both pieces are made from it. I love the combination of the black with the very neutral soft taupe. This is a very French colour combination and you can easily imagine this with Chanel flats and a black banded boater hat. Stripes became one of her signatures and it is wonderful to see them used so well on this piece. The pants are amazing. The legs are cut wide with a slight flared cut at the ends and each is split high up the sides so that when you walk you get a flash of leg. The fabric is so light that they just move with your every move. Over this is layered a long straight cut tunic that is almost more of a tabard. The same side split detail on the pants is mirrored on the tunic but it is taken to the extreme and carried upon to just a few inches from the top seams. This leaves an open gap between the top and the pants at either side so that you get a glimpse of bare skin as the silk moves around you. The bit of seam that hold the tunic together above that is done inside out and is left exposed and deliberately unfinished looking. The tunic is suspended from skinny straps and is cut to skim over the torso and flare out over the pant. My favourite detail is the front pockets that are sewn in a low apron style and have a slight droop to them that gives them that perfect slouchy French country feel. When worn together everything lines up and even the stripes that circle the bottom of each piece sit perfectly aligned on top of each other. I love it. It appears to have never been worn for worn very little. Excellent condition

Both pieces are unlined. The top slips on to wear with no closures and the pants close with a fine metal zipper at the side. Handwritten fabric tag. All hand finished inside. The seams on the side of the tunic are set inside out for a raw feel. It appears to have never been worn for worn very little.
