Rare 1960s Stavropoulos Golden Opera Coat

George Stavropoulos was an amazing designer and to find his early work is already fabulous but to find a piece done at this level is just a treat. This coat is really museum worthy. His clients, who included Elizabeth Taylor and opera singer Maria Calla, adored and cherished him for his ability to create stunning evening wear. His hallmark pieces were simple but with a masters attention to cut. He shunned overt ornamentation and instead focused on cut and fabric to convey the beauty of each piece. This is an amazing example of what he could create following that simple guideline. This is the coat to end all coats. The fabric is a weighty silk brocade whose pattern of flowers and horizontal vines is created by metallic gold threads ranging from a pale silver gold to a deep copper. The cut from the front is simple and almost a column with a slight flaring out as it nears the hem. The back is pure drama with the majority of the fabric falling from the curved seam at the back with a large inverted pleat running down the center to create further volume. It is absolutely incredible! Excellent condition

Fully lined in a hand set and finished pale gold silk. No closures. The fabric has a good solid weight to it but once on is perfectly distributed. Hidden silk lined pockets along each side seam. Museum quality.
