1970s Numbered Silk Gazar Lanvin Caftan Dress
This Lanvin caftan dress is utterly fantastic. It looks like it could have been made this season it is in such remarkable condition and I am in absolute love with it - the color, the design, the workmanship - everything about this dress is perfection. It is really a once in a lifetime piece! The fabric is an almost sheer, finely woven silk gazar that has a hand screened, vibrant print that was applied and pre-planned to each pattern piece before piecing it together. The beauty and brilliance of the color is equaled by the fine workmanship that has gone into constructing it. The loose and easy caftan shape has been created with full panels of fabric - and anywhere a seam is necessary, the pattern perfectly lines up along them so they are barely seen at first glance. The bodice and full with wide open sleeves and that full and beautiful skirt is topped by a panel of fabric that circles the waistline. Each part of the pattern is perfectly set against the next where the few seams occur. The fabric has just a touch of starchiness to it so holds the fullness and the choice of fabric has retained the crispness of the color all these years like it was new. Really a work of art and the handwritten inner tape shows that it was a custom piece making it the equivalent of demi-couture. Excellent, museum quality condition!
Lined through the front bodice and skirt with a silky red rayon. The back and sleeves are left unlined. Finished edges along the inner seams. It closes with a back painted metal zipper. Meant to be worn loose and caftan feeling so is very variable for size. It could be cinched with a belt for shape. Inner handwritten tag.
