1968 Bergdorf's Heavily Beaded Hostess Gown
This is an absolutely stunning gown that we know was made in 1968 since it has a hand written tag dating to exactly November 26 of that year! Sadly it no longer has its original designer tag so it is a bit of a mystery as to who designed it. Bergdorf's would have been carrying all the big designers of the day back then and with the work and extensive beading this has, combined with the beautiful fabric, this definitely would have been by a major name. I know that one day I will stumble across a photo of it in an old Vogue or Harper's and the girl lucky enough to have grabbed it will be happy with a surprise email from me! The fabric is wonderful - it is a bright palette of color with silver thread shot through it so the dress has a wonderful glow to it. It is also very soft and not thick or stiff. The bead work is of course the most magnificent part of the gown - each detailed band is almost a full 2" and these are made of gold cord topped with beads, rhinestones and faux pearls. I love how all the edges have dangling beads - even around each cuff. It is really a beautiful and special piece. This came from the estate of Mrs. Noreen Drexel III. Excellent condition with a few small items to note.
Fully lined in a beautiful vivid green silk. It closes at the front with a series of snaps and hook & eye. Hand finishes inside and hidden pockets on the skirt. Some of the gold thread cording that sits behind the beads has started to fray but it is all still sound and adds to the vintage feel of it in my opinion. There may be the occasion bead missing but there are no bare areas.
