1973 Yves Saint Laurent Pink Silk Ruffle Set

This is an exceptional silk taffeta ball gown skirt and ruffled top set that also retains its original sash. I have added two photos - the monotone one is from the "Yves Saint Laurent; Icons of Fashion Design" book and shows the haute couture gown from the 1971-72 collection inspired by Marcel Proust. Yves designed these "poetic taffeta gowns in what might be termed a Proustian vein" is what the book states. This haute couture look was then translated into silk taffeta gowns for the Rive Gauche label and the second photo is a similar gown from that collection as shown in L'Officiel in 1973. Our example is done in his signature pink hue and is just phenomenal. The skirt is full and yet light. The fabric choice allows it to be very light in weight and yet retain its shape and fullness. I love the double row of ruffles that circle the hem. There is a wide strip of stiffened netting that lies along the inside of the skirts hem, covered in silk, that give the skirt weight and keeps the shape. The top has a ruffled collar and ruffles cap each sleeve. It is finished with an attached tie edged in black. A wide sash ties around the waist and is original to the set. It is just wonderful and truly a work of art! It is also very versatile since it is separates and the pieces can be worn together and presents as a gown, or you may pair them up with other pieces in your wardrobe. Excellent condition.

Unlined but finished to very high standards. The top slips on and is cut straight and boxy through the body. The skirt closes with a side, fine metal painted zipper and two flat hook and eye at the waist. Hidden pockets at each hip.Tagged a vintage 38
