Late Teens Early 1920s Metallic Gold & Coral Silk Lame Flapper Coat Mixed w Bronze Velvet
This coat is absolutely beautiful and the unusual colour is such a rare find for this time period. The body of the coat is made out of a luxurious metallic silk lame that mixes a muted gold, pewter, coral and a pale blue to create that gorgeous pattern that you see. The texture and depth to the fabric that this creates is wonderful and the colour is stunning. The coat slips on and drapes to perfection over you. It is made in that classic late teens, early 1920s evening coat style with a voluminous cocoon feel. To close it you simply button it to one side as was the style during this period. A silk tie inside has been modified at some point to snap into place. This creates that beautiful curve at the front. The bottom of the coat is finished with a wide panel of the muted bronze coloured silk velvet and this drapes all the way around you. It comes up in a graceful curve at the front and eventually meets the button where is drapes down in the prettiest of ways. I love the top stitching detail that runs over the top of that panel. It is these small details that always makes these pieces that much more special. The same velvet is used to finish each sleeve making the sleeves little works of art in themselves. They fall full and loose from the shoulder and narrow down as they reach the cuffs. The velvet covers the lower part of the sleeve and there is a panel that hangs off the cuffs. This gives you lots of movement when you move. Inside it is lined in a tawny peach silk. The coat is cut loose and easy with a large shawl collar. The back part of the collar is gathered and piped and this detail is a strong nod to the Edwardian time frame just proceeding the date of this coat and it is lovely to see the two eras stylistically combined. I love the beautiful draping created when the coat is on. This is a shape that would have been the height of fashion in the twenties and designers like Paul Poiret and Chanel were particularly adept at this silhouette. Though this piece is unlabelled it is very well made . My photos do not do it full justice and in real life the fabric has a luminescent quality to it that the camera does not pick up. In person it is even better. Excellent condition with a small note below
Fully lined in deep peach silk. It slips on and buttons at the side. Inside there is a silk ribbon that snaps into place. The exterior fabric is strong and sound with only a tiny flat area on the velvet on the collar shown on the final photo here. This just adds to its vintage feel and does not impact it structurally at all. The interior silk is sound with no issues. For a garment that is 100 years old it is in remarkable conditon. Hand finishes throughout. The easy cut will fit virtually any size. If you leave the inner strap unsnapped the one side hangs very low and creates an interesting asymmetrical feel at the front
Inside shoulders: 16" but the are soft and slouchy so will work on a variety of sizes
Sleeves: approx 26" from natural shoulder and the panel drops 8" from the sleeve
Bust: to 24" flat across the inside back from side seam to side seam
Hips: 23" flat across the inside back from side seam to side seam
Length: 47-50" from neck to hem as the drape varies the length
Modern Sizing Equivalent: OSFA
