Late 1960s Silk Chiffon Applique Andre Laug Couture Dress
I instantly fell in love with this chic little black dress by Andre Laug the second I saw it. It is so fabulous in person and I only hope that the photos can convey this to you. Laug was one of the grand Italian Couturiers who apprenticed under Nina Ricci and was the designer behind the first "Mademoiselle Ricci" collection in the summer of 1961. From there he freelanced, working for both Philip Venet and Andre Courreges. It was in 1968 that he opened his own label and I believe this dress to be from fairly early on after that happened. Here we really see the attention to cut and details that his atelier was known for. Woman loved his clothes for their rich fabrics and attention to tailoring, but always with a refined and reserved beauty. This dress is a stunning example of that aesthetic. The bodice has a nice V neck and is accented with a ruffle that circles the neckline. The waist nips in and the skirt flares out with an abundance of fabric. Each sleeve has a slight puff above the cuff and is left unlined for a pretty sheer effect. The fabric is exceptional - a black silk chiffon with individual petal and leaf cut out hand applied over the surface. This gives the dress a 3D effect that is quite beautiful. Excellent condition.
The skirt and bodice are fully lined with two layers of a hand set fine black silk chiffon. The sleeves are left unlined. It closes with a fine back painted metal zipper and each cuff has hidden, fabric covered snaps at the wrist. Tiny snaps run down the back collar. Lots of hand finishes throughout and beautifully constructed.
