Fall 1974 Yves Saint Laurent Deep Burgundy Velvet Smock Coat & Skirt Set

This is a great little set by Yves Saint Laurent. He did a lot of work in velvets during these early years and the fabric had enough weight to it to hold the shapes he wanted but at the same time would would drape and move with his clients movement. We found a shorter version of this set with its matching skirt that was photoed for Paris Vogue in 1974.

Both piece of the set are made out of a deep burgundy colored cotton velvet. The cut of the jacket is loose and easy and reminds me a bit of a painter's smock with a nod to the renaissance period thrown in for good measure. The sleeves are cut with a bit of volume over an extra wide cuff that you can wear flipped up or unflipped for more length. The body of the jacket is cut so that it widens out as it nears the hem in a loose and easy line. It buttons to close down the front and slanted slash pockets are set on each hip. I love the top stitching detail around the shoulder that carries through and around the upper back. The matching skirt is cut in a simple fitted pencil shape. Th jacket is meant to be very oversized compared to the skirt. Together they are fabulous and if worn as separates it is an easy way to mix in a pop of original Yves Saint Laurent into your current wardrobe and a splash of rich color. Excellent condition.

The jacket is fully lined in a deep red silk and buttons down the front. Front pockets at each hip. The skirt closes at the side with a zipper and its lined in black. Hand finishes. Note that the skirt is a XS-SML but the jacket will easily fit to a medium
