F/W 2000 Issey Miyake Striped Egg Carton Runway Dress

Issey Mayake headed to Apris back in 1964 where he worked for Guy Laroche and Givenchy, followed by a stint at Geoffrey Beene in NYC by the late 60s. By 1970 he had opened his own studio and two years later, less then 10 years since his start, he was back in Paris to show his own collection. His clothes have always sculpted around the body, using it only as a base for his creations and the impact he has had on the fashion world in unparalleled. In 1999 Naoki Takizawa became the designer of Miyake’s women’s wear lines and this dress is from one her very first shows - the Fall 2000 collection. I have included the video of that show and at the 4:20 mark of video is where you first see the dress. It is most often called the "egg carton" dress though I have also heard of it referred to as the "popcorn" dress as well. Both names in tribute to the remarkable bubbled effect of the fabric. It skims over the body with more volume towards the hem and has a boit of a life of its own as it moves and drapes as you do. The color is a deep sullen grey, offset but the cream striping down each side and sleeve, circling the hem and detailing the collar. It is an amazing example of the technical aspect of his work and will only increase in value as decades pass. Excellent condition

Unlined and slips over the head. Tagged a size 4 but the stretch and volume allow for a slightly greater range of sizes.

SIZE GUIDE

Please review all measurements carefully. More often than not, vintage garments do not fit any size category exactly. If in doubt, measure a garment of your own that fits and is a similar cut and compare it's measurements to the listed measurements below.
