c1966 Yves Saint Laurent Sequin Stripe Top & Satin Pant

Yves Saint Laurent was the master of making simple pieces into something luxurious and fine and here we have a fabulous example that is the very definition of that aesthetic. The 1966 Haute Couture collection featured sequin striped pieces and this would be based on that collection (I have included lots of reference photos from that collection). This is two pieces with the top being a strapless fitted bodice with a graphic black and white sequin stripe. The pants are cut fitted around the waist and hem and then the legs are loose and easy - almost a pajama pant cut, with a deep hem that creates the feel of a wide cuff without actually having a true cuff. They feel incredibly modern and the two pieces together are fantastic. The top is constructed with a nod to its couture roots and has the extra long zipper and a panel of silk chiffon that allows you to tuck it into the pants. This is how couture pieces are constructed and its very practical but takes a lot of extra work and fabric so rarely done in ready to wear. It is incredibly chic and a fabulous set that you can wear together or mix with other pieces for greater versatility. Excellent condition

The pants are unlined and close with a front zipper and button at the waist. The top closes with a side zipper. The top is lined in a white rayon fabric that I suspect was added at a later date. This came from an estate of a very fashionable and wealthy woman who was also conservative and she would lined some of her clothes and then re-attached the labels. Based on the fabric of the lining compared to the construction of the top I am guess that is what was done. It would be extremely easy to remove if you wished but does serve the purpose of protecting the silk chiffon and making the top more opaque. The sequins are hand sewn onto a very fine silk chiffon base. I see a few missing here and there but no huge empty gaps. Priced accordingly. Only the top is labelled
