c.1966 Andre Courreges Haute Couture Textured Cream A-line Dress
This very beautiful and perfectly cut Haute Couture dress by Andre Courreges. Courreges spent 11 years as a cutter for Balenciaga before launching his own label in 1961 and that high standard of tailoring shows in his garments. Courreges produced Haute Couture right from the start that appealed to the youthquake movement. The lines of this dress are classic for the work that he was doing in and around 1966. He was famous for his 'space age' tailoring and bold forward thinking lines that were far ahead of their time when introduced and still have a lasting impact on current day fashion. The Met Museum holds a similar cut dress from this same time period in their permanent collection.
The fabric on this dress is exactly what you look for in a Courreges piece from this era. The dress is made out of a good weight wool fabric that is structured enough to hold the intended shape he wanted it it have. The wool has a slight texture to it and is done in his favorite color. The seaming is superb and the dress reflects the clean geometric lines that he excelled at. The shoulders are cut high and slightly inset. There is a beautifully curved seam just above the breasts that is set to meet the vertical center seam that runs down the front. This is then repeated at the back. A small horizontal strap is set at the lower back and it buttons into place. The sleeves pouf slightly above the buttoned cuffs and are cut to just above the wrist. The proper Courreges couture label is present and it is entirely made by hand. This is a stunning example of his work during this time period. Excellent condition with a minor note below.
Fully lined in a hand set cream silk. It closes with a back painted metal zipper. The strap set at the low back buttons into place and has properly finished buttonholes. Each cuff buttons to close. I see two pinhead size storage marks on the inside of one sleeve and the slightest of marks on the front and back skirt that are only visible in certain lights
Slightly inset shoulders: 14"
Bust: 17" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: 15.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: 18.5" flat across from side seam to side seam
Length: 33" from neck to hem
