1960s Malcolm Starr Batik Print Dress w Heavily Beaded Belt
Elinor Simmons designed for the Malcolm Starr label from the early 1960s to 1972 and you can see her handiwork in this wonderful dress made from a batik print cotton. The print is a wonderful mix of pinks and reds that really pop. The print is hand screened onto a crisp cotton. The pattern would have had to have been all pre-planned out prior to cutting so that the design exactly follows the cut and lines of the dress. This technique uses extra fabric and is often too cost prohibitive to do properly on modern day garments any more. The dress plunges low at the front with a crossed over effect and the sleeves are kept long as a balance. The skirt flows out from the waist and it is cut quite full in order to show off the pretty print on the fabric. The front of the skirt is left open with a high slit that runs up the center. This gives you the versatility to wear this over a capri, a full pant or shorts if you wanted more skin to show. The wide belt is densely covered in hand applied beads to add a touch of glitz to the whole thing and it cinches in the waist for added shape. A wonderful piece of vintage. Excellent condition.
Unlined and closes with a back metal zipper. The belt closes with hook and eye that could be adjusted or moved to get the perfect fit.
