1960s Andre Laug Couture Pleated Cream Silk Dress

The work that has been put into this dress is astounding. It is really an achievement and the details & techniques are all at couture level. It is just wonderful in person and I only hope that the photos can convey this to you. Laug was one of the grand Italian Couturiers who apprenticed under Nina Ricci and was the designer behind the first "Mademoiselle Ricci" collection in the summer of 1961. From there he freelanced, working for both Philip Venet and Andre Courreges. It was in 1968 that he opened his own label and I believe this dress to be from fairly early on after that happened since it came from the same estate as the lovely black chiffon one I listed recently. Here we really see the attention to cut and details that his atelier was known for. Woman loved his clothes for their rich fabrics and attention to tailoring, but always with a refined and reserved beauty. This dress is a stunning example of that aesthetic. The bodice has a pretty scooped and wide neckline that is accented with both a lace ruffle and a lace panel that circles the neckline. A second lace panel is attached to the inner lining of the skirt and peeks out below it. The waist nips in and the skirt flares out with an abundance of fabric. Each sleeve has a slight puff above the cuff. The pleating is exceptional - through the bodice it is perfectly pin-tucked, changing to a sharp knife pleating through the skirt. Excellent condition with some small flaws to note below.

The skirt and bodice are fully lined with a hand set fine cream silk chiffon and the inner lining of the skirt has an additional panel of lace along the bottom. The sleeves are left unlined. It closes with a fine, hand set back painted metal zipper and each cuff buttons to close at the wrist. Lots of hand finishes throughout and beautifully constructed. Note the spot (photoed) on the back of the sleeve near the cuff. There are a couple of teeny storage spots on that same sleeve near the shoulder at the back. These may lighten further with another round of cleaning.
