1920s Assuit Diamond & Tassel Design Hammered Metal & Net Scarf

Assuit scarves were wildly popular in the 1920s. There was a craze for all things with an Egyptian slant thanks and these Assuit scarves were among the most prized things to get ones hands on. An Assuit scarf is made from a fine cotton mesh fabric that has tiny little squares of real silver hammered and folded into the mesh - in essence the metal is wrapped around the mesh to form that fantastic design that you see. The scarf is literally covered with these little silver squares. On this one the pattern has a strong Art Deco feel with large diamond shapes and geometrical patterns highlighted with tassels designs along the edge. These originate from the Assuit region of Egypt and have been produced since biblical times. You can still find them today but the original, antique and vintage ones are heavier and are completely hand done. It is a thing of beauty and a wonderful example of the level of craftsmanship and care put into garments during this time period.

The edges are hand rolled and stitched. There are areas of slight oxidation to the silver here and there were time has darkened the silver but I do not consider this a flaw as it is natural patina and adds to its appeal. I see a couple of minor storage marks here and there but again nothing that is out of the ordinary for a piece this age. I found one small break to the net.

94" x 26" and it weighs  just over 1 pound

Note that antique and twenties pieces are final sale. They will be packed exceedingly well and we only sell pieces that will stand up to the stress of shipping, however, having pieces potentially shipped multiple times through multiple customs and countries is too hard on garments that are historically important and deserve to be treated with love and care. Please purchase accordingly.

SIZE GUIDE

Please review all measurements carefully. More often than not, vintage garments do not fit any size category exactly. If in doubt, measure a garment of your own that fits and is a similar cut and compare it's measurements to the listed measurements below.
