Super Sale! 1980s Geoffrey Beene Sequined Silk Dress with Shawl
I love Geoffrey Beene's work during this time period and like the other sequin and silk dress listed this week this dress is also absolutely divine. It is very different from the other more sculptural dress and yet still shares some of the same elements. Here again we see the use of beautiful sequin work. On this tea length dress they are applied in dense overlapping rows on the bodice with wraped and twisted panels of the silk taffeta worked through the molded and fitted top to add depth and interest to the design. The bodice is fitted and boned with a dipped and peaked upper edge that emphasizes the bust and curves into a fitted waist. From there the skirt skims over the hips to the hem with yards and yards of silk used to create fullness that is all gathered through the top of the hip. I love the washed watercolor floral pattern that covers the silk and the little woven dots - a Beene signature - that runs over the and through the fabric. This has a stunning matching shawl that is caught up at each end in an elaborate fabric flower - again yards of silk have been used and it becomes a clever piece that can be worn full and open over the shoulders or twisted and lean as more of a scarf piece or even as a head wrap. The final detail I love - the sequin edged lace that peeks out from under the bottom hem of the skirt. It is really an amazing dress and a testament to Beene's genius. Excellent condition.
Fully lined in a fine black silk organza edged in a wide black lace and sequin panel under the skirt and black silk through the bodice. It closes with a back hidden set zipper. Exceptional interior finishes and ribbon finished exterior hem. Boning through the bodice. The shawl is unlined.
