They were a signature piece for Lanvin during this time period and  every chic woman had to have one. A Lanvin piece is a masterful mix of prints and this one is no different. The top portion is made  of a very thin and light stretch knit jersey that I feel has a touch of silk worked into the fabric† - it will cling to every curve and  is almost like not wearing nothing at all it is so light! The front scoops high on the neck  and the back scoops much deeper. To further emphasize that back a chunky metal zipper is used that goes almost to the floor. This is an interesting detail as you see Alber use dramatic zippers often and you cant help but wonder if dresses like this from the archives were the inspiration! The  skirt is a masterpiece - it is made of a chevron, waffle weave cotton and puffs  out slightly from the waist before it cascades to the floor. The waist  starts high under the bust line and skim over the waist and swings out  over the hips in a delicious swoop. It has an attached back belt made of the same fabric with a slide buckle. even the buckle is special - it has a bit of a art deco feel with a two slanted sides. It is only upon the closest of inspection that you realize the genius of the dress. Those patterns worked into the sleeve appear to be screened on. They are actually fabric that is edged so finely and placed into the black that you don't realize they are a separate piece of fabric till you see the back. And each of those designs - they are the finest hand embroidered bits! Edith Small was perhaps not as well known as some of her  contemporaries of the day but she produced well made pieces and used  high end fabrics and liked to work in difficult fabrics. Like the fine silk netting and lace that this is made of! The skirt is constructed from a bias cut, fine woven silk crepe and has a faux sarong look with one side swept up into a knot. The waist is dropped and the illusion is that the front plunges almost to the waist. This is done cleverly by a nude backing behind the silk crepe. Over both those layers is a layer of fine silk net with tiny dots worked into the fabric. The neckline is discreetly beaded and each shoulder has a lattice work pattern in gold metallic thread. The print and colors used are utterly amazing - the mix is masterful and even though it should be busy it works perfectly together when taken as a whole. The top portion is made of a very thin and light silk jersey - it will cling to every cure and is almost like not wearing anything! The front scoops just at the neck and the back scoops much deeper. Each sleeve is long and skinny. The skirt is a masterpiece - it is made of a basket weave cotton and puffs out slightly from the waist before it cascades to the floor. It actually wraps over itself so when you sit you can allow a leg to peek out. The original, wide silk satin, vivid green belt is still present and is a great finish to the print!
