1970s Bill Gibb Patterned Knit Soft Pink Front Tie Poncho Cape Coat

Bill Gibb was born in Scotland and moved to London to study fashion design at St Martin’s School of Art. Between 1969 and 1972 he worked as a freelance designer for the fashion house of Baccarat before launching his own company.
This wonderful knit poncho is typical of much of Gibb’s work in the 1970s as he explored knitwear.

Gibb was one of the most influential and famous designers in 1970s Britain and his clothes were sought out and worn by the rich and famous. This pale pink poncho cape piece is amazing and an absolute perfect example of his knitwear work. I love the easy, draped lines of this piece and how it can just layer over just about anything and look amazing. It almost has a slouchy cardigan feel to it and its design lies in some strange and wonderful mix of a cardigan, a coat and a poncho cape. The knit has a large paisley, folkloric-inspired design running through it that goes across the lower half. Pattern runs more densely down each arm as well.  The cut through the body is very loose and easy and the arms defined by a simple seam. At the front it has three pairs of long pale green ties that you can use to close it a bit if you wish. This is an absolutely wonderful piece. Excellent overall condition with a minor note to review below.

Unlined and slips on to wear and you can tie it at the front. There looks to be a small well-done repair at the back that is more apparent from the inside then the exterior. One of the ties is a touch unraveled. I photoed both these and they are shown after the shot of the label.

It measures 49" flat across from the end of one sleeve to the other when laid out flat. It is 30" from top to bottom when measured the same way. Once on, it drapes down more at the sides as shown and lands just above the knee or so depending on your height at the longest points
