Documented Fall 1982 Yves Saint Laurent Runway Leather Coat
The sleeve was of primary important on the Fall 1982 YSL runway and I am very pleased to have found a runway photo of the twin of this wonderful coat along with reference photos from Vogue Italia and a photo of Catherine Deneuve in what appears to be a version in velvet.
For Fall 1982, slim cut dresses where finished with wildly extravagant, huge puffed sleeves and arms were cut on a distinctive. Here we have the twin of the piece that walked the runway that season and it is spectacular. The body of the coat is fitted and curves down the torso into a dropped waistline. The collar is high and rounded and sits above a dramatic double row of polished carved wood buttons. The "skirt" of the coat is quite amazing and is full and set with soft gathers around the waist. This fullness acts as the perfect balance against those beautiful sleeves. Each sleeve is cut on a rounded curve that starts at the gathered shoulder and curves down the arm to the notch cuff. At the cuff, each sleeve is decorated with a row of six of those same polished wood buttons. Amazingly, each button on the cuff is fully functional - a testament to the workmanship put into the piece. Indeed, the entire piece is made with the same care as if it was fabric, an innovative approach to leather for this time period. It is absolutely stunning and of museum quality. Excellent condition
Fully lined and closes at the front with the buttons as seen. All buttons are functional. Front pockets.
