1990s Chocolate Givenchy Wrapped Ruffled Jersey Dress

I love this little jersey dress that simply wraps into place and instantly turns makes the body all curves and flouncing ruffles. This dress came from the archives of the Ebony Fashion Fair and pieces from that collection were exhibited at the Chicago History Museum in 2014 with the exhibit now touring. In the prempt for that exhibit their promotional material states:

"The Ebony Fashion Fair began in 1958, and over the next 50 years the traveling fashion show blossomed into an American institution that raised millions for charity and helped Johnson Publishing Company reach audiences.

Show organizers overcame racial prejudice to bring the pinnacle of Europe’s premier fashion to communities that were eager to see, in real time and space, a new vision of black America that was the hallmark of Ebony and Jet magazines. Eunice Johnson took over as producer and director in 1963, and under her direction, the traveling show took on new heights as she expanded her cachet and power within fashion circles."

Here we have a beautiful piece by Givenchy and though not numbered this is the mainline label from that time period. When Hubert retired in 1996, John Galliano became head designer at the House of Givenchy for one year and was then replaced by Alexander McQueen who stayed on until 2001. This dress is most likely from the McQueen period though its ruffled and extravagant lines may well be attributed to Galliano. The jersey is very light weight and I love the deep chocolate brown color - dark enough to verge on being black but a touch more flattering on most skin tones. The wrap cut is very sexy since you can tie it to be more modest or allow for a dramatic front plunge. The waist can be cinched with the long attached ties for maximum curves. The skirt is cut so that it is shorter at the front and this allows for more leg to show when you move. The entire front edges are finished with a ruffle and that same  dramatic ruffle finishes each sleeve as well. Excellent, appears unworn condition.

Unlined and wraps to close with the attached tie belt, Tagged a size 40 but please check measurements - due to the wrap cut you can easily add or subtract at least an inch to the ones listed below.
