1950s Pauline Trigere Blue Silk Taffeta Cocktail Skirt, Top & Sash

Pauline Trigere, a Paris born, Americal couturier, was a master cutter and when she launched her label in 1942 her work quickly became sought after. She was known for her tailoring and French styling that quickly attracted major buyers across the country. By 1958 she has sales of over 2 million dollars a year, an unheard of feat for a female designer of that era. Even more so since she remained as the head of her company and oversaw it all for over 50 years. This is a wonderful and early example of her work and I think that it is exceptionally beautiful. It really is the epitome of the look she represented during this era. It combines sophistication, her signature structured and lady-like tailoring, and is cut meticulously. She cut her patterns on the body and was a master at bringing fabric to life. All three pieces of this ensemble are constructed from an extremely lightweight, high grade silk taffeta that holds it shape fantastically and yet weighs virtually nothing. You can literally tie the sash into a bow and it will remain exactly as you formed it. Yet the fabric is not stiff at all. It is quite remarkable. The top is a study in proper line and technique. Every curve is perfection and I love how the points on either side of the hip exactly follow the slant of the pockets on the skirt. That is the kind of detailing that has to be planned out meticulously for it to work once the fabric is pieced together. The skirt is cut in that classic 1950s "New Look" fullness, made even more so by the addition of a crinoline underneath. Large slanted flap pockets sit on either side of the hip of the skirt. The sash cinches in the waist and the waist of the top sits a little high to hint at a cropped silhouette without actually becoming one. made to demi-couture standards. Excellent condition

The top and skirt are unlined. The top closes with hidden snaps and hook & eye at the side. The waist of the top has an elastic finish. The skirt closes with a painted metal zipper. A flat hook & eye and snap close the waistband. The sash is original to the dress and can be wrapped around the waist or used at the neck. The crinoline is not included.
