1990s Christian Dior by John Galliano Bias Cut Silk Chiffon Dress
During John Galliano's years at the house of Dior he arguably produced some of the most amazing bias cut gowns in the houses history. His work, especially the bias cut pieces that have a feeling of the decadence and abandonment of the twenties and thirties, are beautifully cut. They marry Old Hollywood with the minimalist spirit of the nineties and the results are stunning. This dress is a great example of that and it is beautiful. I love the soft colors used. They are a mix of yellow, a pale mint and a pastel tangerine, intercepted with black and white. These are then laid out in a graphic chevron pattern that covers the entire dress. It is completely cut on the bias to skim and drape over the body from the scooped neck to the lower hip. The bottom skirt is set into the body of the dress in a pointed design that both plays off the print on the silk. The technique used is derived from the twenties. The skirt itself is made up of layers of silk that float and move around the girl wearing the dress to create a beautiful sense of movement. A tightly spaced row of buttons runs down the side of the dress - a signature of his - and this adds to the sense of antiquity to the gown. It is very light and stunning on. It bears the main Christian Dior label of the time so would have been considered demi-couture as opposed to the Boutique label of this time period. Excellent condition
Fully lined in a bias cut off-white silk crepe. It slips on to wear and closes with the series of buttons and fabric loops that run down the side. It appears to have never been worn. The bias cut will allow for a variety of sizes to wear the dress. Note the length does come up when on depending on the size of the girl underneath since it is cut on the bias.
