Stunning Spring 1999 Oscar de la Renta Lace Runway Cut Lace Top & Golden Silk Skirt Set

This set is coming from the estate of a woman who was personal friends with Oscar and she bought some of his most beautiful pieces. For the Spring 1999 collection Oscar did a series of dresses and sets that used these dramatic trained silk taffeta skirts. It was shown in several variations on the runway including the twin of the one I have here today. I also have a strapless dress version from this collection in the shop at the moment and it is as equally beautiful (find that here). Ashley Judd wore a red sleeved version of the dress to the VH1 Divas Live event. She then changed and wore the skirt and jacket version to the after party at the Beacon Theatre in New York. The Met Museum also holds a piece from this collection and I could not be happier to have this one in the shop. It is gorgeous.

This Oscar de la Renta set is wonderful and has all the drama we love to find with vintage pieces. I love that you can mix and match the two pieces with other things in your wardrobe to extend the life of each. The top is stunning. It is made from an open cut work ivory lace and only a part of the front panels are lined with a nude silk chiffon. The entire back, upper bodice and sleeves are unlined so you clearly see skin through the open parts of the fabric. It has a pointed collar set high back on the neck and then it plunges right to the waist at the front just like how it was presented on the runway. I have tucked it in like they did on the runway but also took a couple of shots of it untucked so that you can see how beautifully it is finished along the bottom. You could easily wear it as a light jacket over something. Each sleeve is full and poufs out above the ruffled cuff. It tucks into the skirt which is made out of a fine silk taffeta. The colour of the skirt is this interesting hue that is between a pastel yellow and a gold. The silk has a slight iridescent quality to it and this causes it to change slightly in different lights and gives it a bit of a metallic feel. The design is very unusual and was a key component to this collection. The skirt nips in at the waist and is cut to hug and follow the curve of the hip and then it wraps in towards the ankles. At the back it is all gathered in to the mid thigh and held in place with a large flower feeling detail that sits up and off of the skirt. The hem is then detailed with overlapping pointed cut outs that are made out of the of the same silk and individually applied all the way around the hem. The back is cut into a sweeping curve of fabric that creates a train behind you. It is extraordinary. Excellent condition with a couple of small notes below

The bodice is part lined in a nude silk chiffon at the front. It closes with snaps and each cuff has elastic above the ruffle. The skirt closes with a hidden set zipper and is unlined. The top is tagged a vintage 4 and the skirt a 6. There are some minor marks on the skirt in two places and some on the edge of the cuffs. Please review all measurements carefully. More often than not, vintage garments do not fit any size category exactly. If in doubt, measure a garment of your own that fits and is a similar cut and compare it's measurements to the listed measurements below.
