1990s Thierry Mugler Couture Iridescent Pink Lurex One Shoulder Dress
Thierry Mugler founded his Mugler label in 1974 and steadily gained notoriety with his shocking designs. In 1992 he became an invited member of the French Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. He was known for using innovative fabrics and the theatricality of his runway presentations. He once stated that couture is "the materialization of dream-like visions in fabric form"
As with many of Mugler's pieces, the design begins with the fabric and this dress is no exception. He has a pink metallic lurex knit that has a subtle iridescent metallic sheen to it. This catches the light so that the entire dress shimmers and gives the fabric an almost organic, alive feel. The cut of the dress is a nod to the thirties and the glamor days of Old Hollywood. Mugler often referenced this time period and created drape and form like a master using bias cut techniques and clever seaming. The bodice of the dress drapes over from one shoulder. The top of that shoulder is highlighted with a double loop of a metal 'snake' chain that leaves the skin peaking through. This same chain accent gathers up the fabric at the opposite hip. This creates a beautiful cascade effect down the side of the skirt. It also hides an extremely high slit so when you walk or sit you get an unexpected flash of leg. The skirt is cut supermodel long and flows to the floor and beyond in a sweep of gorgeous bias cut fabric. The back is slightly trained and the entire dress flows wonderfully. The color is far less of a neon on person and even better then how it has photoed. Excellent condition.
Fully lined in the same fabric through the bust and the skirt is lined in a red silk. The dress closes with a hidden set zipper at the side. Both of the chains details loop and snap into place under fabric folds so you do not see the closures. Inner waist stay. Hand finishes. Tagged a 40. Note the length will come up a touch when on since it is bias cut
