Gianni Versace by Andy Warhol, 1980.
Spanish actor and fashion-school student Antonio Banderas has been cast to play Gianni Versace in a new biopic, to be directed by Bille August. The upcoming film will explore the life and death of the late Italian fashion designer and is set to start shooting at the end of the year in Italy and Miami, where Versace was murdered in the summer of 1997.
The as-yet-untitled movie is the latest biopic to focus on the famed Italian fashion family. In 2013, Lifetime dramatized the life of his sister, Donatella, in the campy House of Versace. And as was the case with Lifetime’s TV movie, the Versace brand hasn’t approved this new film, either. “The movie should only be seen as a work of fiction,” the company said in a statement about the Lifetime film.
Though little else is known about the forthcoming film, we can assume the movie will cover Gianni Versace’s rise to the top of the fashion world and his high-profile friendships with Elton John, Princess Diana, Sting, and Madonna. (His funeral was a veritable Who’s Who of ’90s icons.) In anticipation, we went ahead and dream-casted the film.
