Hairstylist Sam McKnight has worked on over 100 British Vogue covers, is Kate Moss's go-to hairdresser and is Karl Lagerfeld's second-hand man when it comes to the hair for Chanel's campaigns, shows and shoots. And now, Somerset House is celebrating his outstanding career with an exhibition, Hair by Sam McKnight, launching in November.
Looking back at his work with Lady Gaga, Madonna, Princess Diana (on one memorable Vogue shoot, McKnight recalls fastening her tiara with a piece of knicker elastic), and more - as well as his impact on the fashion world - the exhibition celebrates a 40-year career like no other. A book of the same name, published by Rizzoli, will launch alongside the exhibition.
"It feels very flattering, if a little surreal!" McKnight told us today. "I hope that it will bring a tangible insight into the amount of hard work and imagination of teams of creative people which is going on constantly in the background to bring endless beauty to the world. It's hard to pick favourites, but many of the wigs we have created for past shows for the likes of Fendi, Chanel and Westwood will be on show."
