Tracee Ellis Ross at the 2016 BET Awards.
When you get the call to send a box of goods for someone like Tracee Ellis Ross, everyone on the Shrimpton team gets excited. Tracee is one of the most down to earth, wonderful celebrities out there and myself and my team all love her to death. When she just happens to be co-hosting the BET Awards and you might just get a vintage piece on her for the event - well it all becomes that much more exciting.
From our end what happens is that stylist, Julie Matos, sends me a starter list of what she has in mind and a wish list of what she would like. I then put together a box of pieces from the shop and pull never before seen items from my archives and off the box goes to Hollywoodland. We then hold all our breath, cross our collective fingers and toes and say prayers to the vintage gods that something might work out. I know that pulls for these events can be huge and dresses can come in from all four corners of the planet and include choices from the biggest and brightest brands in the world, so its a big game of wait and see and hopes. However, vintage is special so I always feel we have a little advantage. After all, how else do you guarantee that no one else will steal your look?
You can just imagine how utterly thrilled I was to see Tracee not only wear one of my vintage pieces but that she wore it to make her red carpet, grand entrance in! Julie told The Hollywood Reporter when they interviewed her that 'though there were other outfit options, "As soon as Tracee slipped it on, we instantly knew it was the look!" ... "Nothing compared to the way she felt and looked in (the) Mugler". And just like that our S/S 1983 Thierry Mugler Sequin Snakeskin Python Dress is now forever a part of entertainment history.
I want to send out a HUGE thank you to Julie for thinking of me and saying such kind things about my little business and of course hugs and kisses go out to Tracee for looking so great in our vintage. We were honestly thrilled and thankful. A big thanks also to their respective teams as well who work so hard behind the scenes. Normally I would close with a link to be able to buy the dress but I am even more thrilled to tell you that Tracee decided she had to own it. If that doesn't tell you that she truly did love the dress then I don't know what will.
Here is a little more of the interview Julie gave to the Hollywood reporter:
First Rihanna, now Tracee Ellis Ross, is vintage Mugler having a red-carpet moment? Stylist Julie Matos gives us the 411.
Tracee Ellis Ross turned heads when she stepped out in a powerful, long-sleeve python print dress, completely covered in clear sequins, on Sunday night for the BET Awards. It turns out it was a Thierry Mugler piece from Shrimpton Couture, an online destination that sources vintage and vintage couture.
Ross' stylist, Julie Matos, chose the fierce, curve-hugging look for the Black-ish actress because she was "feeling a '80s/'90s vibe that was sleek and modern. My inspiration was a modern-day Eartha Kitt," Matos tells Pret-a-Reporter.
Matos, who has styled the likes of Chelsea Handler and Sofia Vergara on magazine covers (Redbook and Health, respectively), says Shrimpton Couture is "definitely one of my go-tos" for one-of-a-kind pieces. "I've been a longtime lover and collector of vintage fashion. Over the years I have worked with numerous archives, vintage houses and collectors."
Ross is just the latest celebrity to bring Mugler back on the red carpet. At this year's Billboard Music Awards, Rihanna wore a vintage shirtdress by the French designer who rose to fame in the 1980s and 90s by reworking masculine tailoring into powerfully sexy, broad-shouldered feminine silhouettes. At the Much Music Awards, Gigi Hadid wore a scarlet pantsuit from Mugler's resort 2017 collection designed by David Koma.
Could this be the resurgence of Mugler on the red carpet?
"Bringing him back is a must," says the stylist. "Thierry Mugler is known for his sexy, sculpted and tailored pieces — making him perfect for red carpets."
