Karlie Kloss, 23, left, and Christy Turlington Burns, 46, at Il Cantinori. Christopher Gregory for The New York Times.

Supermodel Karlie Kloss seems to have it all, she has worked with pretty much all the fashion greats, she was a Victoria’s Secret model, a philanthropist, stellar baker of cookies, Taylor Swift’s main squeeze, and she can even write code. Yet, of all her elite accomplishments, having her NYU reference letter penned by the woman who the Metropolitan Museum of Art declared as the “Face of the 20th Century,” Christy Turlington, may just be one of her crowning moments.

There are a lot of similarities between the two, as pointed out in a delightful interview with The New York Times’ Phillip Galanes, which reveals that the models were not only discovered in a similar fashion, but both were middle children who had what they considered to be their first major fashion shoot with legendary photographer Arthur Elgort, whom they both credit as being a great teacher.

Outside of the coincidental similarities and the glamour that comes with being an in-demand model, the way both women chose to conduct themselves at the height of their fame is what unites them so closely. Turlington stepped away from the fashion scene in 1994 while she was still very much at the height of her fame to pursue an education. Kloss now believes she can both model and pursue a degree and thanks Christy for “paving the way.” As the NYT interview discusses, both have a commitment to education and using their positions of privilege to better the lives of women less fortunate than themselves.

There is a right place, right time, right girl element of luck involved in Kloss’ rise to supermodel status, but she is also undeniably one of the ultimate models of the 2000s with lanky good looks that remind one of Twiggy or Jean Shrimpton, yet with the modern new age ‘90s supermodel celebrity status of the models in Turlington’s day.
