1992 was a big year for Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce, the label was 8 years in and things were going strong. They presented their first men’s collection, launched their first fragrance titled simply, “Dolce & Gabbana Pour Femme” and Steven Meisel shot their ad campaigns. This is the year that the label caught Madonna’s eye leading to a partnership with Madonna in 1993 to design the 1500+ stage costumes seen in her worldwide "Girlie Show” concert run for her 1992 album Erotica. In an interview about the costumes, Madonna stated "Their clothes are sexy with a sense of humor—like me.” …… and you can bet it was the Spring and Fall 1992 runway shows that was the deciding factor in that decision.

Early Dolce & Gabbana is really good stuff. Sometimes I think the label gets overlooked because of the D&G years - they over-licensed out the name and the clothes were often not as great quality. There were too many knockoffs of earlier looks and looks that were simply done for the season rather then being made under a strong directional view point. When the news broke that they were dropping that diffusion line and concentrating on the original Dolce & Gabbana line, while adding the Alta Moda (couture) shows twice a year, I literally stood up and did a happy dance. I knew that in doing so that attention to detail and quality would come back and from what I have seen of the new collections it was the best decision they have ever made.

It brought them back to pieces like this little beauty - a simple and sexy bustier corset dress that walked the runway on Cindy Crawford for the 1992 Spring show. I posted the entire show for you above and you can see this dress at the 11:50 mark. And oh how good it is. It's cut to fit and mold the body to epic Italian siren proportions. It is in your face sexy and epitomizes the inner wear as outer wear movement of this time period. It is one of the original dresses that spurred an entire movement and freed women to a new level. It's all about sex baby but the best possible kind. It's the kind of dress that is so good I honestly am tempted to keep it just to be able to look at it. It is so perfectly, perfectly, perfectly 1992. Even Madonna would approve.
