I feel like Kylie Minogue gets overshadowed a little bit because of the similarity in her career’s to Madonna's. They both hit the scene around the same time, both blondes making pop hits, and both have careers which have spanned several decades. They’re so different to me, though, and I think Kylie deserves her credit. She has made some of the best music videos in recent pop history, and she’s not afraid of a little (or a lot) of camp, which I love. I could make a dozen posts on Kylie Minogue videos, but one of my favourites at the moment is her video for “What Do I Have To Do,” a single from her 1990 album Rhythm of Love. Kylie described the look of her video as “how many Hollywood stars can you look like in three and a half minutes...” and it seriously shows. The video is like a composite of Sofia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor and a little Audrey Hepburn with a Fellini-esque look and a 90s supermodel finish. The song perfectly encapsulates that early 90s disco-dance music sound, like anything you would have heard in A Night at the Roxbury. So bonus points for that. However, the looks are just to die for, especially the makeup. Her little sister Dani, who also had a pop career, however brief, appears in the video as Kylie’s party girl companion. “What Do I Have To Do” is probably one of her lesser known videos but if you love that high-90s full faced, nude lipped Versace girl look that Naomi Campbell et al. fully embraced for the decade, you’ll love this.
