Then: Charles Revson, the creator of Revlon, launched his make-up brand with the world’s first opaque nail varnish. He also invented matching ‘lips and ‘tips’ – after noting with distaste the clash between a fellow diner’s lipstick and nail varnish when she raised her glass for a sip.

Now: Designers at Fall 2013 NYFW, such as Zac Posen and Dannijo, have followed Revlon's early advice with modern twist - the colour oxblood.

Get the look: Essie's Carry On was used on the nails at Zac Posen while Butter London's Las Moss was used at Dannijo.
