Six iconoclasts, 1 icon––the theme of Louis Vuitton’s latest project that has six legends of design and art creating their own limited edition of an iconic Louis Vuitton bag. Frank Ghery, Cindy Sherman, Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Louboutin, Marc Newson and Rei Kawakubo have each been commissioned to interpret the timeless monogram for limited release mid-October in celebration of the house’s 160th anniversary. It seem’s like an appropriate move for Louis Vuitton’s new creative director, Nicolas Ghesquiere, considering the rather radical spirit which propelled him to great success early in his Balenciaga days.
In anticipation of the bags’ release, Louis Vuitton released a campaign video staring models Freja Beha Erichson, Liya Kebede, Julia Nobis and Saskia de Brauw each showing off the reinterpreted monogram designs. Highlights include artist Cindy Sherman’s multicolored trunk, Karl Lagerfeld’s monogram boxing equipment and Rei Kawakubo’s tote with classic Comme des Garçons-esque burn holes. The October issue of Harper’s Bazaar also boasts a spread shot by Karl Lagerfeld of each of the “iconoclasts” with their respective interpretations of the classic Louis Vuitton monogram.
Louis Vuitton’s Celebrating Monogram Collection can be purchased at Louis Vuitton stores October 15th.
