Editor's note: Last week on my instagram I posted the 1995 photo of Kate Moss on the second floor walkway of the Beverly Hills Laurel Motor Hotel as one of my daily "morning inspirations". Within moments, Tova Kaye, who is a stylist, vintage curator & collector of vintage, left a message saying she had actually been there the day this editorial was shot! I immediately asked her to share those memories with us and she kindly has obliged. Below is her account of that day in her own words. (PS if you have a moment watch this video on Stylelikeu featuring Tova - is amazaballs and you will fall in love with her like I did)
Back in the mid nineties in LA when I was doing a lot of styling and wardrobe costuming, I got invited to a friends Hotel to be a 'spy' during a fashion shoot.
This fun kitsch retro Hotel called The Beverly Laurel has been at the same location for decades.
Family owned and run, it's also attached to the hipster restaurant Swingers Diner which has managed to remain a staple for the "in" crowd for 20 years now.
On this particular day in 1995 the shoot was with Kate Moss for Vogue. I was particularly excited to be behind the scenes for reasons you'd expect from a lover of all things fashion. For one, Kate was one of my favorite models at the time. Secondly, I always got a kick out of seeing models and actresses in person before they were "done up".
I remember Kate as she arrived. Much shorter than I expected, not at all diva-like and not with a huge entourage. She had that obvious beautiful bone structure with those sweet signature far apart eyes, yet seemed so unaffected and perhaps a bit quiet. Photographer Arthur Elgort captured her darlingness in various retro inspired outfits like that colorful and fun Todd Oldham 2 piece retro inspired ensemble that was what caught my eye when Cherie posted it on instagram and led to me sharing my memories with you!
While Kate has managed to keep her career going 20 years later while aging very naturally, the Hotel is currently embarking upon a major facelift!
To show the enduring love for this hotel still to this day it is fun to note that the May issue of British Vogue featured a bevy of the newest hip musicians. The shoot included the Haim sisters, who are the beautiful eclectic hip and mega talented daughters of neighbors of mine growing up in Benedict Canyon. Small world!
Oh and guess who graces the cover of that issue of UK Vogue? Kate Moss!
