Spring/summer 2014 is shaping up to be the season of the overall. With the endless barrage of ‘90s nostalgia dominating the runways over the past couple of years, it was only a matter of time before the comfy style made a comeback to mainstream fashion. Overalls have been around since the late 1700s, worn overtop clothes to protect garments during work and were donned by women in English factories during the first world war in 1916. Depicted in the 1930 Grant Wood painting American Gothic, a farmer sports overalls next to his his unmarried daughter who dons an apron, It is one of the most famous paintings in the history of American art. Overalls became more fashionable in the ‘60s and ‘70s but were most popular during the ‘90s. While some see dungarees as a fashion don’t, the trend is everywhere this season. Overalls appeared on the S/S ‘14 runways of Balmain, Alexander Wang and Rag and Bone, just to name a few. The style popped up on NYFW street style images, all over Coachella and on modern celebrity style icons like Alexa Chung and Rihanna. Will you dare to wear overalls this season?
