As the Spring 2014 trend reports roll in this month, florals once again resume their staple status on the runways. I can hear the infamous Miranda Priestly deadpan immediately.“Forals for Spring? Groundbreaking.” Over the years, fresh takes on this tried and true print have demonstrated a great deal of range. Whether florals are depicted in print, merged with the 3-D trend that has also become popular on the runways, or used well-placed and sparsely, when executed well, these pieces pack a wow factor. After decades of floral inspired collections and editorials, the reference still parlays a timeless elegance. The dreamy inspiration is romantic. Even Queen Elizabeth wed Prince Phillip in a floral wedding gown in 1947. Flowers give a sense of classic femininity. However, juxtaposed with harder elements, florals can give a modern, edgy take on femininity, as seen in Erdem’s RTW 2014 Spring collection. Our sartorial obsession with florals could come down to nostalgia, but ultimately it is the versatility of florals that makes the print such a consistent source of inspiration.
