Every year since 1964 Pirelli has round up some of the worlds most beautiful models, then shot them by legendary photographers, all mixed with the elite racing tires to produce its annual calendar. 2014 is the 50th anniversary of the calendar and it was rumoured that Peter Lindbergh and Patrick Demarchelier would produce the photos for this landmark edition.
So it was a bit of a surprise when it turned out that they went back into their archives and used the photos from a shoot that was not finished. In 1986, one of the most legendary photographers of all, Helmut Newton, had to stop the shoot for personal reasons and the photos that were taken were never published. Twelve black and white photos, starring models Susie Bick, Betty Prado, and Antonia Dell’Atte, are shot by Newton and his team in Monte Carlo and Chianti are like a privileged glimpse into the past. As good as many photographers are, there is just something about a Newton picture that captures sexuality as only Newton can.
